Small and large businesses alike frequently fail to comprehend how social media can be used to hear the subtle, vital nuances of the market or worse yet, the not-so-subtle screams.

They get caught up in amassing huge numbers of Facebook likes, Twitter followers, and high generosity scores. They forget to actually listen to what is being said. What does this look like in the real world? Take these two infamous examples from Domino's and United Airlines...

Make trends and influence people

Make trends and influence people | Social Media Monitoring & Metrics | Scoop.it
Internet-savvy consumers post, blog and tweet about everything - including the products and services they buy. It’s an information goldmine - if you know how to listen.

Brands are now discovering that if they are a part of this conversation on social media channels, the real advance can be gaining a better insight into their customers and their peer groups.

By listening in to, and being active in, social media conversations, brands are realising that there is a lot more to market research than standing in a shopping mall with a clipboard or emailing recent purchasers a list of questions about their likelihood to return online.

Without Actionable Intelligence, Your Doing Digital Marketing Wrong

Without Actionable Intelligence, Your Doing Digital Marketing Wrong | Social Media Monitoring & Metrics | Scoop.it
If you’ve taken a moment to gander at my photo at the bottom of my posts here on SME then you might noticed I could lose a few pounds.

Working a lot at a desk and having a lovely wife that cooks amazing homemade meals most days of the week is easily the best way to increase your physical mass over time. How the Pros Measure Social Media Marketing Success

How the Pros Measure Social Media Marketing Success | Social Media Monitoring & Metrics | Scoop.it
The notion that marketing costs can’t always be understood is an ancient one. John Wanamaker, a department store mogul who died in 1922, once mused, “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.”

The same could be said for social media marketing. Though there are a lot more metrics than Wanamaker could have imagined back in his day, the tricky part is determining the right ones to use. Is it retweets? Facebook Likes? Or maybe just product sales?
