I agree with 9 out of 10. I don't think social media, done right, lowers your marketing costs (#7). Maybe eventually, and eventually is in three years or more when your social engine is really tuned, you might sort of lower costs.

More likely you costs will shift from paying for robots to paying for people. We think that is a GREAT trend consistent with the say we see he web moving (from traffic acquisition to creating cherished and valued experience).

I agree with Marty (@ScentTrail) on this one. Social Media Marketing will probably not lower your costs if you are doing it correctly. The rest of this is spot on. Your competition may or may not already be utilizing social, but either way it is something you need to be doing. The real beauty is customer availability, whether your competition is social or not, virtually all of your customers are. Social gives you the opportunity to start a dialogue with them in real time where they already are in a non-intrusive way. When used correctly, the results can far exceed this list of 10. 

 

Companies also have more opportunities to be creative when outreaching on social. Traditional email outreach open rates are typically around 20% depending on the industry (http://support2.constantcontact.com/articles/FAQ/2499); but I've conducted guerrilla outreach on social platforms that exceeded 90% response rates. There's really no reason not to utilize social in a B2C model.

  • Be specific & BIG NUMBERS are great ways to be specific.
  • Be branded – take advantage of existing brands such as Shades of Grey.
  • Be topical – March is “fashion week” in NYC and both magazines have extensive features.
  • Be welcoming – note how both models look directly out at the viewers (my favorite online engagement pose).
  • Use SOUND – “Sexy, Shiny, Bouncy Hair sounds fun. “Full on Fashion Force” sounds forceful. Words create rhythm and sounds that adds to or detracts from compelling images.
  • Juxtapose – “street chic” and “fashion force” are examples of creative juxtapositions.
  • Use Action Verbs – which of these action verbs AREN’T on either cover? grab, be bold, upgrade, must have, takes on, and rock? Yep, all of those “action verbs” are in sub-headlines.
  • Simple Colors – ONLY colors used for headlines and sub-heads are black, white and red.

AGREE with Jack. The way he says it the emphasis is where it belongs - on the constant sea of change as Google and everyone else iterates code daily and hourly some day soon.

Radical SEO Idea

In 2003 I climbed up on a soapbox and tried to sell my Direct Marketing bosses on content marketing. They knew content because they paid BIG BUCKS to copywriters.

DM writers seemed to have a magic wand. They could tell a story that motivated people open their mail and call the call center. Today we need so much less WORK from our customers and yet achieving that "less work" is so much harder.

My radical idea is THERE IS NO "NEW SEO".

I'm not saying that half of this infographic (the new half) isn't helpful. It is helpful, but the idea of comparison is a) moot and b) not as dramatic as this comparison makes it feel and seem.

Understanding the WHY and WHAT is moot. The new SEO simply IS and they have a solid presentation of the "new SEO" here. The problem is boiling the new SEO down to an infographic chart with little boxes denies the interconnection between each of these pieces of sinew and the highly dynamic nature of this new mobile social web.

Mobile and social are dancing on a fire. One hand of the dancer, the hand holding the phone, pours gas on the fire even as the other hand, the social hand, tries to share the very HOT experience.

SO, focus on one side of this infographic and don't get caught up in why, how, who. Focus on how the new SEO is a tapestry and your marketing may need a massive RETHINK to play well with the new constantly and quickly changing Google.

Does Arrogance Still Scale? Not so much...
I live in a loft in a renovated tobacco building. I thought it was appropriate to put the Story of Cancer Foundation in a renovated tobacco building. The Duke Alumni Office is our neighbor occupying the first floor and several buildings including our parking garage.

Friday night after six o'clock the Duke Alumni Office threatened to tow my car. I pay for parking and an electronic gate requiring a special card to open controls the deck. This post is about how can an office ostensibly in the BE NICE business be so unaware of the social, community and brand implications of such a threatening action.

Imagine one of your neighbors threatened to tow your car out of your gorge. You would call the police. I hope it doesn't go that far, but Duke is asking like an arrogant GOLIATH and should learn that social media is a slingshot capable of making any Goliath have a bad day.

The point for EVERY business is we are all connected now. Treat me, them and us like the family members we are and we will get along great. Mean and arrogant wouldn't be my first choice for branding building in a social, mobile age.

I'm in Miami this week taking part in the Holmes Report's Global PR Summit and the topic of "Brand Journalism."

 

I know nothing about the subject but no one else does either because it's a made up term that is in the early stages of being defined. Nothing wrong in that, I do it all the time but I try to think of concepts that make sense and this one doesn't make any sense at all....

I see the need for rebranding. PR has imploded swept away by search engines and social networks. I can also understand a desire for an attachment to brands. Brands are perceived as the lasting core of marketing. I don't understand the concept of "brand journalists" since journalism is investigative and far ranging and sends shivers down the spines of most CEOs and CMOs I've worked with or for. 

Since brands are becoming more social, with much of this new work being done by brand advocates and supporters NOT people with a direct stake (employees in other words), I see a brand champion role that PR experts could help create and shape.

Perhaps the most important idea for our new PR brand marketers to understand is how much flux brands and branding are in. Take a look at this infographic about how brands are "socializing": http://www.scoop.it/t/curation-revolution/p/791811864/branding-is-changing-socializing-your-brand 


Brands and companies are changing rapidly. Here are some important ways companies and brands are changing:

* Brands and companies are becoming publishers. 

* Brands and companies are becoming curators.

* Brands and companies are becoming entertainers (Meetups, Videos, etc..).


While "Brand Journalism" may seem dissonant to what brands were and are becoming, brand curator or brand champion is a much needed missing set of marketing skills. PR skills such as building relationships with thought leaders, organizing disparate information into engaging communication, promoting engagement and connecting companies and brands to their supporters wrap around this idea quickly and well. 

PR pros could become the brand sherpas of a new more open, engaged and social branding.  Brand journalists as a concept just sends shivers down the CEOs and CMOs I've worked with (lol).
