Truth About Social Media's Impact, ROI and Strategies

Truth About Social Media's Impact, ROI and Strategies | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

It is now common for companies to develop Social Media strategies and to hire Social Media Managers in order to boost their online presence. But what can you really expect from Social Media Marketing?

Marty Note
Don't agree with every aspect of this "truth", but I have been working on a new concept about social media marketing that discusses means and ends. The means of social media helps find the wind to sail.

The ends of social media should be positive ROI. ROI can be difficult since attribution is something we don't currently have the tools to accurately measure and that is one truth this post skips over.

I also don't agree that social media's forward momentum stops the instant promotional efforts cease. Yes that is the way traditional one sided advertising works. No money no momentum.

Social media is a conversation so YOU the marketer are being changed by the interaction (if you are doing it right) and that benefit could pay returns for a long time. This is the means not fully discussed in these "truths".

Social Media Marketing ROI Myth Busting With Dr. Natalie - SalesForce | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Yesterday's webinar with Dr. Natalie Petouhoff (@drnatalie) was a valuable hour of conversation on measuring ROI of social media. Dr. Natalie is not only U
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Several GREAT HOW TO posts from Natalie Petouhoff @drnatalie . Love the first myth - there are too many variables. BUSTED! There are always "too many" variables since we are marketing online where variables stretch to infinity.

There are NEVER too many variables to create meaningful Key Performance Indicators and watch them like a hawk. Dr. Natalie can even help keep your CFO off your back about all that social spend.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The B2B Soical Embrace

I'm increasingly convinced the greatest ROI from social media marketing (SMM) will come at the enterprise level. When we use SMM for customer service, HR and business intelligence the ROI will fall like a neavy Texas spring rain. This infographic provides facts and figures to back up this belief.

Five Reasons Why Marketers FAIL on Facebook

Five Reasons Why Marketers FAIL on Facebook | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
What content works best, what time to publish updates and how to use sponsored stories are consistent themes being discussed among nonprofit marketers.

Marty Note
Great piece that goes perfectly with a note I just made on how companies waste Social Media money (http://www.scoop.it/t/curation-revolution/p/3403673120/the-3-worst-ways-companies-waste-money-in-social-media ). In that note I shared my suspicion that the Facebook problem, no one making any money there, is as much our fault as Internet marketers as the platform creators.

This excellent article from Huffington provides the reasons why we fail in Facebook and every point here rings TRUE. If you have other tactics we IMers need to change to be successful in Facebook share your thoughts. I will grind on it to and see what I come up with.

You Are What You Measure: Drawing Meaningful Conclusions from Social Media Metrics

You Are What You Measure: Drawing Meaningful Conclusions from Social Media Metrics | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Truth In Advertising
Social media needs an interpreter. I've never read a more true statement than, "fans and followers have not value as a stand alone number". That statement is correct in particular and in general.

Web metrics are best used as part of a modeled system of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs should inform actions. If you are monitoring something and NOT changing your Internet marketing based on what it says (in some way and don't forget numbers that make up your ecosystem and so inform action) then stop measuring it.

The distance between your KPIs and action should be short. The time it takes to take action can be long, depending on the KPI, but creating informed action is why you measure and this post explains HOW to measure social media.

No article can tell you exactly how to measure SMM for your business since how you segment and group is usually highly individual, but this post can help you get started. Metrics are magical and can keep the financial gatekeeper bears at the door, but only measure what has meaning and create that meaning from your modeled ecosystem.

Are you struggling with how to effectively measure your return on investment for your social media campaigns? I will be addressing this issue in a future blog
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

There are more than 3 myths to SMM ROI as we all know. Most important is to KEEP AT IT. Social media is an "invest first" idea. I know there is substantial ROI, but investment and training is needed first.
