HBO’s Games &  Game Theory
Game of Thrones season 5 finale was disturbing, depressing and as close to experiencing chemotherapy by watching TV you will ever get (and we hope you ever get period). The season 5 finale has us wondering if social media marketing is changing the way we create art and not always in good ways.

The $240,000 Nissan Rogue Social Marketing Event That Didn't Happen- Curagami | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

The day a big company understands social media marketing it may be time to buy water and canned goods and get in the basement. The end of days is near.

As this post shares, doesn't look like the end of days is near based on how TONE DEAF Nissan was to a cool social marketing idea, and idea that would have sold $240,000 in cars and costs...well NOTING.

We may NEVER need water and canned goods...sadly.

Social Media Marketing...Because Your Past Doesn't Scale

Social Media Marketing...Because Your Past Doesn't Scale | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Social Media Doubters Begone
Created an interesting spontaneous "campaign" for New Years. New Years day is my birthday. It is my father's birthday too. After a great suggestion from @Kelly HungerfordI set up a spontaneous event.

Every Happy Birth generated a $10 donation to Dr. John Byrd's work at the James Cancer Center at Ohio State where I'm being treated for the leukemia my father and I share.

After the event I created a report showing where my 72 Happy Birthdays came from:

33% Came from Social Media Friends (many made here on @Scoop.it).
24% came from work friends.

19% came from Greenwich (where I grew up during a special time)
12% came from Vassar where I graduated i 1980
11% came from Choate where I graduated in 1976

Still think social media doesn't matter? As I noted in the GPlus post, the ONLY thing that can scale in that list is Social Media. I may be able to incrementally increase my alumni networks, but only Social Media can quadruple.

The future is social. Get used to it and realize it changes everything.

That's one of the many things I love and respect so much about you! Love the stats you include in this post, by the way. Great analysis and social proof! :)

6. Increased Inbound Traffic.

7. Decreased Marketing Costs

8. Better Search Engine Rankings

9. Richer Customer Experiences.

10. Improved Customer Insights

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I agree with 9 out of 10. I don't think social media, done right, lowers your marketing costs (#7). Maybe eventually, and eventually is in three years or more when your social engine is really tuned, you might sort of lower costs.

More likely you costs will shift from paying for robots to paying for people. We think that is a GREAT trend consistent with the say we see he web moving (from traffic acquisition to creating cherished and valued experience).

Social Media Marketing's Top 10 Benefits via Forbes

Stephen Van Delinder's curator insight, August 12, 2014 11:43 AM

I agree with Marty (@ScentTrail) on this one. Social Media Marketing will probably not lower your costs if you are doing it correctly. The rest of this is spot on. Your competition may or may not already be utilizing social, but either way it is something you need to be doing. The real beauty is customer availability, whether your competition is social or not, virtually all of your customers are. Social gives you the opportunity to start a dialogue with them in real time where they already are in a non-intrusive way. When used correctly, the results can far exceed this list of 10.

Companies also have more opportunities to be creative when outreaching on social. Traditional email outreach open rates are typically around 20% depending on the industry (http://support2.constantcontact.com/articles/FAQ/2499); but I've conducted guerrilla outreach on social platforms that exceeded 90% response rates. There's really no reason not to utilize social in a B2C model.

Via Kelly Lieberman
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Great tips here for the mystery wrapped in an enigma social network - Pinterest. Pinterest is the most asynchronous of social nets meaning its hard to map putting in 2 and taking out 3.

Love the multi-channel nature of the tips here. Pinterest is an important community builder. Here are a few tips I would add:

* Pinterest is most focused on Pinterest and pinning.

* Pinterest demographics are 6 to 4 women.
* Pinterest community boards are amazing because they take care of themselves lowering your social media costs and increasing results.

The other reason Pinterest creates trust is its is so beautifully visual. Does put pressure on your visual marketing, but get used to that as all of our visual marketing is under pressure now whether we fully realize it or not :). M

How Snapchat Is Changing Social Media Marketing

How Snapchat Is Changing Social Media Marketing | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it
Snapchat and Wickr are tearing up the social marketing playbook.

While it's no news that social media use has become fractured, a new Pew Research Center report shows just how increasingly complex it's become.

About 36 percent of U.S. smart phone owners are using messaging apps like Kik and iMessage, according to Pew. Apps like Snapchat and Wickr, which automatically delete sent messages, claim 17 percent of smartphone owners as users.

"Users now have dozens of options to communicate with others as broadly or narrowly as they like," says Maeve Duggan, lead author of the report, which was based on phone interviews with nearly 2,000 U.S. adults, most of them Internet users.

Social "Slow TV" Earns A 20% Share In Norway [TED Talk]

Social "Slow TV" Earns A 20% Share In Norway [TED Talk] | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

Social Slow TV
Thomas Hellum's "boring TV" isn't that boring if you care about share. Why does the longest documentary ever shot captivate? TV too is about to become a 2 way street thanks to the social / mobile web.

Hellum's Norwegian production are near and dear to our hearts and our launch of NearThereNow.com a home for people to share their arrivals, departures and "slow TV" versions of trips in planes, trains and automobiles.

Near There How Videos
http://www.neartherenow.com

Excitement may be overwrought. Look at how much free media Heellum generates from creating "boring TV" and realize what is driving hypnotic success:

* Participation in real time.

* Not editing the timeline.

* Slowing the frame of reference so anyone can understand fully.

* Creating a social event long enough to let many get involved.

* Not editing how those who want to contribute do.

All great web marketing / online community building lessons too. Hope you will upload your NearThereNow Videos the next time you are arriving or leaving a favorite place. Sharing makes leaving hurt less. Sharing make arrival all the more exciting.

3 Tactics That Fail At Social Media Marketing

3 Tactics That Fail At Social Media Marketing | Social Marketing Revolution | Scoop.it

"Being active in social media platforms does not mean that you are guaranteed to get higher rankings and better exposure. Sadly, most companies are failing at social media marketing as they are either not implementing the right tactics to market themselves properly.

And when told to classify the different types of people who are failing at social media marketing, I came up with 3 categories."

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This post was titled "3 People Who Fail At Social Media". I thought these three mistakes were more tactical than personal:

* Let's Create A Facebook Account (and then never use it).

* Let's post some stuff and hope (have to be smarter than that).

* Let's like and comment.

The post makes the correct point that being present and real on social media is the key to winning no matter what kind of person you are.
