I agree with 9 out of 10. I don't think social media, done right, lowers your marketing costs (#7). Maybe eventually, and eventually is in three years or more when your social engine is really tuned, you might sort of lower costs.

More likely you costs will shift from paying for robots to paying for people. We think that is a GREAT trend consistent with the say we see he web moving (from traffic acquisition to creating cherished and valued experience).

I agree with Marty (@ScentTrail) on this one. Social Media Marketing will probably not lower your costs if you are doing it correctly. The rest of this is spot on. Your competition may or may not already be utilizing social, but either way it is something you need to be doing. The real beauty is customer availability, whether your competition is social or not, virtually all of your customers are. Social gives you the opportunity to start a dialogue with them in real time where they already are in a non-intrusive way. When used correctly, the results can far exceed this list of 10. 

 

Companies also have more opportunities to be creative when outreaching on social. Traditional email outreach open rates are typically around 20% depending on the industry (http://support2.constantcontact.com/articles/FAQ/2499); but I've conducted guerrilla outreach on social platforms that exceeded 90% response rates. There's really no reason not to utilize social in a B2C model.

How Do You Create 'Heroic Content'?
You create heroic content by knowing that is what you are trying to do. You create heroic content by RISKING things (reputation, your brand, your ideas). You create heroic content by rejecting the lemmings rush toward the next Internet marketing tactic and embracing them all IN SERVICE to some greater idea.

What's your company, brand or website's movement, manifesto and who is in your tribe? Immediately after you create heroic content that gets you in the game (your About page for example), then begin asking for help. Don't wait or hesitate.

It will be slow going at first, but hang in there and keep asking. One thing we've learned the hard way is people want to help especially those willing to risk all, to share the "inside baseball" content only they know and people who want to help first and are worried about returns a distant third.

One way you create heroic content is to be a hero and beginning is easier than you think AND much easier than mastering one more soon to be diminishing return tactic. Great share from my G+ friend Mike Alton. Many cast aspersions on Klout as an idea. I don't. Klout is what helps us SEE into the social radar. Like any "modeled" number your Klout score will go up and down, but THAT is valuable information.

To deny Klout is to deny the importance of social media and such denial is becoming increasingly crazy.

  • Be specific & BIG NUMBERS are great ways to be specific.
  • Be branded – take advantage of existing brands such as Shades of Grey.
  • Be topical – March is “fashion week” in NYC and both magazines have extensive features.
  • Be welcoming – note how both models look directly out at the viewers (my favorite online engagement pose).
  • Use SOUND – “Sexy, Shiny, Bouncy Hair sounds fun. “Full on Fashion Force” sounds forceful. Words create rhythm and sounds that adds to or detracts from compelling images.
  • Juxtapose – “street chic” and “fashion force” are examples of creative juxtapositions.
  • Use Action Verbs – which of these action verbs AREN’T on either cover? grab, be bold, upgrade, must have, takes on, and rock? Yep, all of those “action verbs” are in sub-headlines.

Scoop.it adding authorship and the ability to post directly to a GooglePlus brand page is HUGE. I love BOTH tools for different things:

* GooglePlus rocks longform content and conversations.
* Scoop.it helps curate the REACH needed to do effective content marketing in today's Content Shock world.

By adding Google authorship Scoop.it creates benefits for the commons as the rising tide of all those well ranked authors tag up AND they give credit back to individual curators. Brilliant and a BIG vote FOR author rank. I believe Scoop.it is the FIRST major "commons" play to take this significant action.

The action is significant because it shares BACK benefit we, the curators who use Scoop.it, create. There are many "commons" around such as Facebook, Twitter and Kickstarter. Most "commons" feed off the power a user brings and multiplies it by the thousands or even millions using their platform.

This is why the "commons" forms the new math, the new "thank you" economy. Problem is most commons are all TAKE and rarely give back or they don't give back anywhere close to the value they've received. Today Scoop.it said they are willing to collaborate with their curators. BRAVO!

The other new feature, the ability to curate directly into Google brand pages, may make those pages actually work. I find it hard to remember to post beyond my personal page. This new Scoop.it feature will make it easy to curate content to CrowdFunde and Scenttrail.

My friend @Bill Gassettchallenged his GPlus army to use Scoop.it the other day. The reaction wasn't as enthusiastic as he or I would have liked (lol). Now there is NO QUESTION that the combination of G+ and Scoop.it makes a more powerful tool set than either alone. So I would challenge my big time G+ friends to add in Scoop.it since that rising tide will lift OUR BOATS :). M

Friend asked a great question but in the wrong way. Social Media isn't important to me in and of itself, but each social media channel can help communicate marketing messages and thus become valuable and important.

Key is "matching the hatch" to borrow a fly fishing term.

Matching the hatch puts the right kind of content, what Gary Vaynerchuk calls "native content', on each social net when THAT information is important to communicating a marketing message. Here is how I answered:

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.

If I want comments and discussion GPlus.
If I want feedback from friends Facebook.
If I want to generally test Scoop.it.
If I want a "set it and forget it" content solution Paper.li.
If I have something happening now or want to newsjack Twitter.
To raise money on creative or gaming projects Kickstarter.
If I want to share videos YouTube.

If I want to serialize stories Storify.
If I want to test an infographic Pinterest. 
If I want to do something with audio then SmartCloud.
If I want to create sustainable and potentially "evergreen" content then I use WP blogs. Content becomes "evergreen" based on how it performs (views, shares, conversions).
If I want to sell something ecom then Shopify. 

Match the hatch to get the most from your content, your growing social media tribe, your time and content marketing and curation efforts.

Love it when someone makes our +CrowdFunde points for us. This post, shared by +Phil Buckley, shows how Millennials trust #UGC  (User Generated Content) more than a website's marketing voice.

Duh, of course they trust #socialmediamarketing  and UGC since it is where they and their friends LIVE via their #smartphones . The CONVERSATION is the new means of mem transfer.

"Meme transfer" sounds confusing and dense, but if you think of your products as content and #SMM  as a way to share your content then you are already engaged in "meme transfer". When an article like this one points out who the next generation trusts - their friends on social media - every #Internetmarketer should take notice.

We've not only taken notice we are building a tool to harvest UGC called+CrowdFunde. Good news is Millenials (and soon everyone else btw) trust User Generated Content (UGC). Bad news? Millennials trust UGC and your website doesn't have a way to ask for UGC, analyze it once you get it or take an action based on it. OUCH!

That ouch is why we are spending +Triangle StartUp Factory's money to create CrowdFunde :). Marty

Tackling a social media marketing plan is a bit like eating an elephant - you gotta do it just one bite at a time.

Great starter advice here such as:

Steer clear of divisive topics. Sharing strong opinions on sensitive topics – from politics to parenting – can alienate potential customers. Especially if they have nothing to do with your business, keep opinions away from your social media.

Share and share alike. If you want to grow your network, take the time to provide feedback to people you network with. Share comments on posts in Google+ circles, “like” things on Facebook, take the time to retweet. Oftentimes people in your community will respond in kind.

Add insight. Providing tips or insight to your network gives your business credibility. Take the time to share information that your customers may value.

Master the #hashtag. 

If you haven't come to the realization social media IS your business never too late to get with the program. Get started with social media.

Social Media Snob Test
The purpose of social media is to connect, to BE SOCIAL. Better to NOT be on social media than to be on social and look like an arrogant snob. Not being on social can be forgiven. Being a snob in this day an age is difficult to forgie.

You Know Your Company Is A Social Media Snob If...

* You follow less than 50% of your Twitter followers.
- Following a tiny % of your followers is the ultimate snobbery because it limits communication (you can't DM unless you follow) and you can't REWARD unless you follow. 
- When an expert in your area with 10x the following as your company has (at the moment) follows you FOLLOW THEM BACK!!

* You company doesn't Retweet.
- When you Retweet you share someone's take. You are saying, "this is good enough to share" and that statement is a reward and and a way to "mentor" your space.

* Your company doesn't respond to @yourcompany notes.
- Not responding in a timely way to @yourcompany notes is an EPIC customer service fail.

* Your company isn't on GPlus.
- Time to come in for the big win AND Gplus is the most disruptive social net because of its proximity to high yield SEO (duy its GOOGLE) and most business verticals are nascent on GPlus because there is a learning curve.

* Your company isn't having conversations.
- If you are still using social media to push messages without listening and responding you look either clueless or a snob (and neither of those are good).

* Your Company isn't on Instagram or Pinterest.
- Marketing communication is becoming highly visual so to not be on either Instragram or Pinterest is snobby since it feels like insisting we continue to do things the old "talk about ourselves to ourselves" way. 

* Your company isn't creating video.
- Video is highly widget-ized and so easy to share content. Video is also a more universal language. I may not speak english but video, done right, can be a cross cultural tool.  


* Your company[s SMM is highly scripted.
- Days of scripting every interaction with customers is long gone.  

Don't be a social media snob either by intention or ignorance because being a SNOB on social media is the wrong signal to send...always.

This article instantly grabbed my attention when I read the title. It was very blunt and seemed to give social media a negative connotation, but after actually reading it, I began to realize that it was more of a backwards way of promoting social media. The author initially talks about how a big reason as to why many businesses still exist out there who do not take much to promoting their brand online are generally an older generation of people who prefer traditional forms of media rather than websites that confuse more than benefit them. Writer Jeff Bullas also takes a stab at the idea that social media can be easily measurable. It is instantaneous just like the initial content is to post it on there. Feedback from customers can come by so quickly and at no cost at all over these sites. So much information can be gathered through social media as consumers get a chance to voice their opinions on what they are looking for in a brand. There are other good points that he does bring up such as being afraid of having negative comments posted on their main business website. However, on the contrary, there are ways to deal with this type of feedback. For one thing, companies can gain a better understanding of what customers are looking for and may be able to improve on something if there are any complaints. If anything particularly vulgar happens to arise, there are plenty of filters that businesses can use in order to prevent any unprofessional content from being posted on their wall. Lastly, Bullas also mentions how many people feel like social media is just a passing trend. He may be right about that but being a marketing major myself, one of the most important things to keep in mind is to try to stay ahead of the times. Trying to think of what is new and up and coming will be extremely beneficial since everything is constantly changing and companies’ must be certain that they are still satisfying all of their customers’ needs. Right now the hot thing is social media and who knows what will happen in another twenty-odd years.
