News On Facebook: How Social Media Is Changing News Consumption

News On Facebook: How Social Media Is Changing News Consumption | Social Media e Innovación Tecnológica | Scoop.it

Almost half of all adult Facebook users said that they “never” get news on the social network, which amounts to 30% of the adult U.S. population.

Most of those who find news on Facebook are not actively seeking it, according to the study data. Rather, some 78% said that it happened inadvertently -- they were on Facebook for another reason, and a news tidbit just happened to be featured in their newsfeed. Only 22% said they were actively looking for news on their newsfeeds.

Those who consume news on Facebook tend to be younger, the same age group that is much less likely to be engaged with news on other platforms.

The study also found that news consumption on Facebook did not replace other news-consumption activities.

Find more insights from the study's findings at this infographic.

I love these pompous graphics images. When you have to scroll, you know their are important. Consumer behavior has always been key. At least for the marketers.

Newspapers saw early social media as a threat. Now they need to be friends with monsters like Facebook. Content is king. Distribution is everything. If you are a newspaper. Probably consumer behavior (and consumtion particulary) should be on top of every newspaper agenda.

More and more I think the only way to manage the NOWness of Internet marketing is with a real time setup like this.

Put your favorite searhes on one screen, your Online Reputation Management on another and competition on the third then rinse and repeat until you can't miss anything and before you know it the wall if full of monitors (sort of like the Network Operations Center at Atlantic BT will take a picture of that soon).

10 Years of Social Media by the numbers

10 Years of Social Media by the numbers | Social Media e Innovación Tecnológica | Scoop.it

Facebook launched ten years ago in February 2004. Social media hasn't, doesn't and won't stay still. As Myspace rises, Friendster declines. The pattern's repeated itself a few times already, and even Google hasn't quite cracked the magic social network formula, at least not yet. The crown currently belongs to Facebook, a company that's made some big, big startup purchases on the way, although Twitter continues to pack (arguably) more influence. A whole lot has happened in the last decade, but we've tried to squeeze the more interesting parts into something a little more visual.

How Social Media Changed the Way We Consume News [Infographic]

How Social Media Changed the Way We Consume News [Infographic] | Social Media e Innovación Tecnológica | Scoop.it

Social media is fast becoming one of the main destinations for news online. An infographic created by the University of Florida Online, explores the evolution of the news industry and the way news is consumed.

In 2012 there were 2.4 billion Internet users, and 1.4 billion of them were using social media. Nearly 50 percent of Internet users surveyed said they regularly or occasionally heard about a breaking story on social media before it broke on mainstream sources. In fact, since 2009, social media buzz has resulted in a 57 percent increase in traffic to news sites.

Now online dominates the news market, with 64.5 percent of people going to official sites like The New York Times to get their news. Surprisingly, nearly 30 percent of people still get their news from the papers, but social media is hot on print’s heels with 27.7 percent of consumers.

Who Do Digital Consumers Trust With Their Personal Data? [Infographic] | Social Media e Innovación Tecnológica | Scoop.it

Customer Behavior - Digital consumers often give personal data to retailers, banking institutions, and healthcare organizations. But who, and in which industry, do consumers trust the most?

In the online world, you often need to give personal data to get information from retailers, banking institutions, and healthcare organizations. So, of those three, which do online consumers trust the most with their personal data?

To find out, Infosys recently studied 5,000 consumers in five countries, then created a whitepaper and an infographic from its findings.

Consumers still prefer sharing personal data face to face with healthcare corporations, retailers, and banking organizations, it found.

A whopping 95% of those surveyed prefer to share their personal data in person at their doctor's office, and only 63% are used to the idea of sharing information online.

In the retail sector, 75% of those surveyed are used to idea of sharing information online. However, 72% said "the online promotions or emails they receive don't speak to their personal interest or needs."

Infographic: Managing Social Media as a Customer Service channel | SMI | Social Media e Innovación Tecnológica | Scoop.it

When customers experience a problem with a product, 57% will turn to the internet for help. Of this group, 91% cite online knowledge bases as their first port of call. Then comes social media.

Thanks to the increasing presence of brands and organizations, the platform has rapidly evolved from a digital space where users connect with friends and family, to a complaints channel where users expect quick responses and on-demand assistance. As the infographic below shows, 37% of consumers are now more inclined to ask for customer service via social media, rather than over the phone, and 80% of Twitter users expect a response within 24 hours.

This demand will only increase, and many brands struggle to keep up, with 40% citing ‘complexity’ as the greatest barrier to multi-channel customer service. As such, the majority of brands (63%) receive only ‘okay’ to ‘poor’ service ratings from their customers.

So what’s to be done? Beneath the wealth of stats indicating how vital social media is as a customer service channel, this infographic from The Connection lays out four key starting points. How many are you implementing?

I will be honest, I held a silly grudge against Tumblr because they kicked me out about once every three months due to a password conflict.  I used it enough to see the value, but I never dove in very deeply.  I wasn't impressed with their customer service.  I watched others create intriguing sites.

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, May 21, 2013 1:20 AM

I'm finally realizing that Tumblr is going to have to be my alternative to Posterous.  I can only hope that Tumblr's recent acquisition by Yahoo will be a positive.  Hopefully Yahoo is tired of being a distant #2 and won't mess Tumblr up like Twitter did Posterous.

What I do wonder is why there doesn't seem to be much clear information out there about Tumblr.  Myself....I always found it kinda confusing.  I never had confidence in navigating around it and I got tired of see weird shit on what I thought was MY blog every time I logged in.
