Twitter releasing trove of user data to scientists for research

Twitter releasing trove of user data to scientists for research | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it
Data uses include measuring happiness levels in cities based on Twitter images shared.

Twitter has a 200-million-strong and ever-growing user base that broadcasts 500 million updates daily. It has been lauded for its ability to unsettle repressive political regimes, bring much-neededaccountability to corporations that mistreat their customers, and combat other societal ills (whether such characterizations are, in fact, accurate).

Now, the company has taken aim at disrupting another important sphere of human society: the scientific research community.

In response, computational epidemiologists Caitlin Rivers and Bryan Lewis have proposed guidelines for ethical research practices when using social media data, such as avoiding personally identifiable information and making all the results publicly available.

.

Whether or not Twitter and the scientists who have access to the company's data follow such guideposts, one thing is clear—the trend of mining social media data for various purposes won’t be tapering off anytime soon.

Growth of the Internet of Things | Cool Infographics

Growth of the Internet of Things | Cool Infographics | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it

The current projection data from Cisco is that the IoT (Internet of Things) will reach 50 Billion devices by the year 2020! Visualized by the NCTA (National Cable & Telecommunications Association) as the Growth in the Internet of Things.

Today’s Internet is driven by wired and wireless networks, keeping us connected throughout our daily lives. With the advent of new digital devices that constantly link us to the Internet, these networks have become much more than just a simple vehicle for information and communications. They now enable us to track our daily habits, monitor our health, manage home energy use and track nearly any other data we can imagine. These devices make up what we call the Internet of Things – a web of connected objects that are linked via networks that can interact with each other and with us.

The Internet isn’t merely developing, it’s exploding, and the numbers prove it. Take a look at our graphic below — it shows the advancing surge of connected devices using the Internet.

Today, there are more connected devices than there are human beings on the planet. This expansion isn’t just from cell phones, tablets and computers – it’s thanks to toothbrushes, stovetops and millions of other devices that now have IP addresses. Estimates show that there will be over 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

Fast, ubiquitous Wi-Fi and increasing home broadband speeds will drive the Internet of Things and the ever-expanding web....

What if young people designed their own learning?

What if young people designed their own learning? | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it
Across Australia some of these ideas are being put into practice. Some schools have dropped the notion of year levels to enable them to meet children at their point of need and acknowledge that not all students learn at the same pace.

Computer programs are enabling instruction tailored to the student by assessing where they are at and providing a tailored curriculum.

Capabilities , such as personal and social capability and critical and creative thinking, are being embedded in the curriculum. Work is under way to develop assessment measures. Teachers across Australia are working on developing new models of practice to support this approach.

We need to accelerate the change. We are wasting too much of students’ learning time and are failing to amplify their talents. To continue along the current path is increasingly unscientific, unjustifiable and plain dull.

For free or a fee? Why more retailers are launching premium customer loyalty programs

For free or a fee? Why more retailers are launching premium customer loyalty programs | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it

Gary Friedman has a pronounced distaste for discounts. The outspoken Restoration Hardware chairman and CEO blames the retail sector’s reliance on sales and pricing promotions for many of the problems facing the upscale home furnishings chain.

“Much of how we behave promotionally is left over from the Great Recession,” Friedman wrote in a February letter to shareholders published ahead of Restoration Hardware’s disappointing Q4 2015 earnings report. “The multiple sale events and email communications do not reflect the brand we are building, nor are these promotions aligned with how our customers shop with us.”

Restoration Hardware is eliminating traditional promotions altogether in favor of introducing a premium customer rewards program. Priced at $100 per year, its new RH Grey Card offers shoppers a flat 25% savings on all regularly priced merchandise across all of Restoration Hardware’s brands, along with 10% savings on clearance merchandise, complimentary interior design services and reduced interest rates on its RH credit card.

“Our lives are filled with complexity—and we long to break through the clutter to find simplicity,” Friedman said in a press release announcing the RH Grey Card program. “We want to shop for what we want, when we want and receive the greatest value. So rather than navigating countless promotions, we’re changing things… because time is the ultimate luxury.”...

Just before leaving the house for a photoshoot, I chanced upon this post.

It starts with a premise: Amazon has been around a lot longer than your own website. So, no matter how good your book / product is, its page will always appear after the page on Amazon in search results.

Duh, I thought. Until I read further.

Beyond SEO and link authority, there is something else that matters even more to the visitors of your product page: Your story.

Happy to see Saddleback Leather mentioned in this post. This company is one of the best at storytelling!

How Readers Engage with Long-Form Content on Mobile Devices

How Readers Engage with Long-Form Content on Mobile Devices | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it
Pew Research Center, in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, wanted to explore how the rise in mobile devices impacted long-form content. Using anonymized data from Parse.ly’s database of hundreds of news and media sites, it was able to analyze this trend.

Report Findings: People Read Long-Form Content On Phones
It turns out that long-form journalism does have a place in today’s mobile-centric society.

“These findings suggest that on small, phone-sized screens the public does not automatically turn away from an article at a certain point in time – or reject digging into a longer-length news article. Instead, the average user tends to stay engaged past the point of where short-form reading would end, suggesting that readers may be willing to commit more time to a longer piece of work,” said Amy Mitchell, Pew Research Center’s director of journalism research.

Some highlights of the report include:

Long-form stories attract visitors at nearly the same rate as short-form stories.Across all five distinct parts of the day, readers spend about twice the time with long-form news content on their cellphones as with short-form.No matter how readers arrive at specific content (through a link from an external website, social media, search, etc.), engaged time for long-form content regularly extends beyond that of short-form content.

These findings hold true even for individual digital publishers. For example, Lehigh University, a member of Parse.ly’s University Partnerships program, recently completed a study on reader engagement with long-form content. Editors at Lehigh’s student newspaper, The Brown & White, found that readers spend about the same amount of time on all pieces of content, relative to the length of an article.

Five insights for public media newsrooms in the digital age

Five insights for public media newsrooms in the digital age | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it

“We want most of all to enrich man’s spirit,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s words in launching the Corporation for Public Broadcasting set the tone for a discussion on public media in today’s digital world at Knight Foundation’s Media Learning Seminar.

“That’s a little bit of the role we have today in thinking about what is public media’s role in enriching man and women’s spirit in our country, and ensuring a thriving and informed democracy,” said Knight Foundation’s Vice President for Media Innovation John Bracken kicking off the conversation with representatives of NPR, Detroit’s WDET and St. Louis Public Radio.

While public media continues to be guided by the spirit of Johnson’s remarks, the digital age has brought huge changes to the kind of information people want and the way they access it, pushing news organizations to meet new information demands, the panel agreed. Yet while Americans are inundated with news and content, “it’s not true that all our information needs are met,” said Mike Oreskes, senior vice president, news, and editorial director at NPR.

The biggest unmet need is in local journalism, he said....

RetailWire Discussion: Study: E-commerce is eroding retail profitability | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it

A study from HRC Advisory finds that operating earnings as a percent of sales has declined by up to 25 percent for retailers due in part to a shift from in-store to online sales. The high cost of fulfilling e-commerce and omnichannel transactions also took its toll.

As part of the study, HRC analyzed the financial data of department stores, luxury, specialty apparel, beauty and off-price retailers as well as interviewing 15 c-level retail executives to gain their perspectives.

The study found that investments made in supply chain upgrades, digital marketing, IT, variable logistics costs and managing a high level of online returns generated incremental SG&A costs of two to three percentage points of sales. At the same time, real estate and wage inflation as well as declining in-store sales are resulting in a one to two percentage point reduction in physical store profit contributions....

How to Use Snapchat: A Detailed Look Into HubSpot’s Snapchat Strategy

How to Use Snapchat: A Detailed Look Into HubSpot’s Snapchat Strategy | Social Media Marketing Does Not Replace SEO | Scoop.it

Back in 2011, Snapchat was synonymous with risqué teen behavior. News coverage repeatedly warned parents of the damaging effects the platform might have, and as a result, the success trajectory wasn't looking good.

Since then, Snapchat has evolved into something so much more. And while it's certainly not the cornerstone of every marketing strategy just yet, the channel has earned a reputation for fast growth and innovation.
Snapchat is now known as a platform for individuals and brands -- one that allows users to create quick, lighthearted, and even educational video content without using valuable production resources. For brands, this means a new opportunity to show off their culture, share knowledge, and connect with their audience in a new and exciting way.

After reporting more than 100 million daily active users, and over 8 billion video views a day, we decided to give it a go: The official HubSpot Snapchat account launched in March 2016. And while we're still getting our feet wet, we've already learned a lot about executing and iterating a successful Snapchat business strategy....

That’s because today, when something is not in social media, it probably doesn’t exist. People, events, brands, even government institutions are engaging their followers through social media.

Brands invest in social media marketing because it doesn’t just guarantee awareness or increase profit. Social media gives you a platform to be closer to your followers and ultimately earn their loyalty.

As a blogger, you may not have thought about it, but you need to see what you do as a business. You have to build your brand – if you want to succeed, that is.
