Richard Smith: Teaching is stand-up comedy

This post is not directly related to Social Media or technology, but it is very thought-provoking. Teaching is a difficult task. Teaching doctors and medical students may sometimes be even more challenging. How can educators make sure they effectively engage their audience? I like Mr Smith's honest thoughts on his experience.

Challenges in doing Social Media Workshops for Medical Educators

I like this post, simple and yet tought provoking. Organising a Social Media workshop is not an easy task, giving participants what they expect is a challenge... I had direct experience last year at AMEE. I think the concept of "watch and think" and "feel and do" is what facilitators should not forget. Talking and reflecting on personal experiences is fine, but it shouldn't take more than the 10% of the whole workshop... However, showcase and reflect on what has been produced during the workshop is essential!

Donald Clark Plan B: More pedagogic change in 10 years than last 1000 years – all driven by 10 technology innovations

The growing gap between teaching practice and learning practice is acute and growing. Institutional teaching, especially in Universities is hanging on to the pedagogic fossil that is the lecture. The word pedagogy has become a hollow appeal for traditional lectures, classroom teaching and summative assessment. The true driver for positive, pedagogic change is the internet.

Response: Several Ways To Teach Critical Thinking Skills - Classroom Q&A With Larry Ferlazzo - Education Week Teacher

Critical thinking has been floating around the world of education for years. However, it has often been treated as an add-on to the curriculum rather a core aspect of learning. Copyright in the age of Social Media

This is a very important theme for medical education; the number of available online resources is increasing and particular attention needs to be given when sharing and re-using content. "The trend for sharing and the increase in online content places ever greater importance on our networks, the people in them and the content that flows through them. Anything that ensures we keep the credit for our work as it moves through these networks can only be a benefit."
