Email! - From chaos to sanity with SaneBox & Google Priority Mail | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it
There's a better way to manage your inbox--let SaneBox do most of the work for you.
Deb Nystrom, REVELN's insight:

I'm a big fan of Google Priority Email, particularly for my business Google apps mail, for how it learns what messages I consider important.  I also make good use of its filters.

SaneBox has a custom dashboard  timeline that graphs how many important and less important emails you get every day.  It also stores non-essential messages.  When you CC or BCC a message to @SaneBox.com to remind you if someone doesn't respond to an email.  Very handy!  ~  D

It makes the most of video using multi-media enhancements like Google Maps, live twitter feeds and pop-up comments.

Excerpted:

Networked or Just Worked? LinkedIn’s Shiny, New Endorsements Buttons

Networked or Just Worked? LinkedIn’s Shiny, New Endorsements Buttons | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

"You may have seen the shiny, new skills endorsement tools on LinkedIn.  Is endorsing a useful enhancement or a troublesome distraction?"

As a curator of tech topics in social media, this is one of my own posts with input from social media specialists on what they think of LinkedIn's new endorsements function.

Excerpts, Pros & Cons

PROS:

It’s EASY.   It takes mere seconds to endorse one or more of your contact’s particular skills pulled from your contact’s profile.

It RENEWS connections.   This could be a great way to affirm good things you know to be true from working with those well-known colleagues, clients and other contacts.

Cons:

It might be TOO easy.  – The temptation may be to use the endorse function with those you met only briefly.

Gaming for Influence via Junk Profiles:  Forbes Blogger, Pam Moore, writes:

  • Endorsements are of course good, when they mean something.

  • She describes her dismay when staff from  her team searched those claiming bragging rights for their social search ranking on LinkedIn via Twitter, and says that they were, “honestly shocked with the result.”

LinkedIn Cheat Sheet: 5 Tips for a Professional Profile - Careerealism

LinkedIn Cheat Sheet: 5 Tips for a Professional Profile - Careerealism | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

Useful post!  I immediately used one of these practical, ]LinkedIn profile tips from Careerealism's career experts to spruce up my profile, and I was already pretty good at it.

Here's an excerpt of their Cheat Shee of 5 Tips for a Professional Profile:

3. Get Recommendations… Lots of Them

Seek them proactively and seek them passively.

  • Proactive recommendation seeking involves reaching out and asking someone to recommend you.

  • Passive recommendation seeking involves recommending someone, at which point LinkedIn asks them to recommend you back. The latter is actually a bit more effective.

5. Give Your Professional Headline a Boost

Use the “|” to divide your text and create visual breaks.

Example: Which of the following is easier to read?

What Results to Expect From Twitter, By # of Followers & Click-Through Rates, Infographic | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

Joanna's results are in:  Check out the click through rates (CTR) from tweets and how this varied by the number of followers, day of the week and time of tweet

Twitter is a great way to build and engage an audience with short, timely, relevant messages, but if you’re trying to drive traffic to your website, what results should you expect in terms of click-through rates?

Check out this Infographic by Joanna Franchetti from Sign-Up, who analysed tens of thousands of tweets sent through Sign-Up’s Twitter marketing tools in the first seven months of 2012 to find out the answer.

Joanna's study results focused on average click through rates (CTR) from tweets and how this varied by the number of followers, day of the week and time of tweet.

Findings include:

  • The average CTR for a tweet is 1.64% (just over half the rate of email, which averages 2.95%)
  • CTR declines rapidly as your number of followers increases.
  • Clicks tend to increase later in the day, peaking at around 6pm.

How LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter Have Changed the ROI of Leadership - Forbes

How LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter Have Changed the ROI of Leadership - Forbes | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

"Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter have changed the ROI on leadership and it’s your responsibility to get in the game."

Excerpts:

As a former C-level exec, I was skeptical myself, but now I’m a believer. Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter have changed the ROI on leadership and it’s your responsibility to get in the game.

About a year ago, the head of marketing for a healthcare company told me, “our leaders are not paid to write and express their POV outside their immediate roles & responsibilities. Besides, many of them don’t write well and would tarnish their image if they tried.”

I responded  ...many of your smaller competitors have invested in activating the voices of their senior executives by training them how to blog and also how to utilize social media to expand their reach and influence.”

This prediction recently became a reality and not only has the head of marketing been fired, but the company has had to hire new talent that understands how to implement the power of social media.

Social media trends in 2012: The 10 biggest headlines of the year

Social media trends in 2012: The 10 biggest headlines of the year | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it
Excerpts:

Pinterest was the social media success story of the year, offering a more visual alternative to Facebook and Twitter that synced neatly with ecommerce and affiliate marketing.

Facebook continued to dominate and Twitter grabbed most of the headlines (although not always for the right reasons).

Twitter clamped down on third party apps to pave way for more ads,

LinkedIn added follow tools and bought SlideShare, while Salesforce boosted social CRM for clients buy snapping up BuddyMedia.

Deb Nystrom, REVELN's insight:

I opened a box of gum yesterday and found the Facebook logo INSIDE the display style box. Social media continues its pervasive influence in our lives, witnessed by this summary of trends.

this articles gives a good overview of how that is happening in their synopsis of 2012 trends, including:

  • Twitter’s live news reporting
  • Pinterest’s digital scrapbooks
  • Google+ - beginning to rival Twitter for global active users

I have active accounts in all three of these and agree with what I see in this piece.

Become ONE: Google+ profile and YouTube channel integration, MORE coming | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

"Google announced another integration: your Google+ profile PLUS YouTube AND you can keep your channel name."

I've already done this.  It makes sense if you have the right set-up with your YouTube channels.  ~  Deb

Excerpt, from TNW:

  • You can still keep your channel name.

  • If you prefer to market your own personal brand, then Google is urging you to switch to the Google+ one.

  • If you don’t want a full name on your channel, in the coming weeks, Google+ page (as opposed to a profile) will have that as a new feature is coming “in the coming weeks.”

Also coming will be

  • Advanced Google+ page management features that let up to 50 people manage a single Google+ page, or ...

  • A single person will be able to manage up to 50 Google+ pages, which will all supposedly nicely work with YouTube channels linked to Google+ pages.

Workplace Social Media Infographic: Seize the Opportunity, HR Must Embrace Social

Workplace Social Media Infographic: Seize the Opportunity, HR Must Embrace Social | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

It's not about controlling & setting up rules, it's about giving social a bear hug! HR Must Embrace Social ~ more than compliance.

The last time I went to a statewide HR conference several things happened:

  • the social media presenter didn't show up, (8 a.m. session),
  • the other social media topics were about controlling social media behavior in companies, one taught by a lawyer / compliance person
  • my own topic on peer learning and social media overload was met with some angst and even fear.

And...I learned a few things about the current state of things in the HR world.

A year has passed, and I'll be going back hopefully to share a new perspective on how shared learning and collaboration, with some good social media policy developed by staff themselves and good technology tools, can greatly help collaboration, creativity and learning on the job.

Enjoy the infographic.

Finally, Easy Stuff for WordPress: 6 Reasons to Install AND USE the WordPress Jetpack Plugin

Finally, Easy Stuff for WordPress: 6 Reasons to Install AND USE the WordPress Jetpack Plugin | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

"This review of Jetpack got me over my doldrums and disaffected non-blogging status with my WordPress website.  It's a very handy and FREE set of tools!"

I've implemented the social media integration already via my self-hosted Wordpress site: REVELN.com.   This social media share plug-in element IN PARTICULAR is EASY.  Finally, Wordpress!

Glossy, media rich platforms that don't so much need the heavy lifting of html like Posterous and Tumblr still dazzle, but at least WP is catching up with this fantastic plugin pack with it's very own navigation menu.

Why, I might even mini-blog this and pin it on one of my 45 Pinterest boards.  Heh, and you might think I'm kidding.

Below is the #1 reason from the Jetpack review on why Wordpress users will want to take a look at this cool plugin pack.

Excerpted:

1. Easy to Install, Setup, and Learn

Jetpack could not be easier to install and set up, considering how many different benefits it provides.

To install it, just go to Plugins –> Add New and then type “jetpack” into the search box. It’ll be the first result.

Hit “Install Now” and you’re ready to go (unless you need to create a WordPress.com account, which is necessary so you can link it with your blog and Jetpack).

Once you’ve got the plugin activated, it will create its own dashboard nav bar menu section right at the top.

If you want to see the social media I now am using, thanks to JetPack, which made it EASY, go to THIS blog post, "Open Space on Speed: Social Business with the Coaches, Results! Video"  and scroll down to the bottom.

  • Note the social media icons and ease with which you can comment and share!  (And DO feel free to share with comments! :-)

===

Enjoy.  There's something there for just about everyone, it seems.

Elite Leadership Tweets and the $1.3 Trillion Price Of Not Tweeting At Work - | The Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

"Recently, the CEO of Oracle, one of the largest and most advanced computer tech corporations in the world, tweeted for the very first time and joined a club that remains surprisingly elite."

DN:  Twitter is peerless in its current, to the moment sensing of what is going on in the world and the ease with which connections happen.  Leadership + social, however, moves slowly, as attested by the CEO of HootSuite.  HootSuite has been my favorite twitter management tool, by the way.

Leader reluctance to fully understand the impact and usefulness of social media may be to their company's detriment, via new findings released by McKinsey as well as learning which big companies are investing in social now.

Social technologies [can] free up expertise trapped in departmental silos. High-skill workers can now be tapped company-wide

___________________________

Excerpts:

Among CEOs of the world’s Fortune 500 companies, a mere 20 have Twitter accounts. Larry Ellison, the Oracle CEO, by the way, hasn’t tweeted since.

A new report from McKinsey Global Institute, however, makes yet another business case for social media:

  • According to an analysis of 4,200 companies by the business consulting giant, social technologies stand to unlock from $900 billion to $1.3 trillion in value.

  • At the high end, that approaches Australia’s annual GDP.
  • Two-thirds of the value ...rests in “improved communications and collaboration within and across enterprises...”

  • Any human interaction in the workplace can be "socialized"--endowed with the speed, scale, and disruptive economics of the Internet.

In the last year...Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Adobe and even Oracle, spent about $2.5 billion snatching up social media tools.

Social technologies [can] free up expertise trapped in departmental silos. High-skill workers can now be tapped company-wide.

...social sharing translates to a productivity windfall as "enterprise information becomes accessible and searchable, rather than locked up as ‘dark matter’ in inboxes.”

In the last year, the world’s largest enterprise software companies--Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Adobe, and even Ellison’s own Oracle--have spent upward of $2.5 billion snatching up social media tools to add to their enterprise suites.

Even Twitter-phobic CEOs may have a hard time ignoring that business case.
