Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it

A massive survey of internet users reveals trends in social media usage across numerous platforms, ages, races, genders, population density and which social media sites do they frequently visit.

The Pew Research Center has released the results of a comprehensive social media survey, conducted over several years to evaluate which demographics were using social media, and on which platforms. Which social networking sites emerged on top?

Of the online adults surveyed at the end of 2012:

67% use Facebook

20% use LinkedIn

16% use Twitter

15% use Pinterest

13% use Instagram

6% use Tumblr

A decent amount of Americans appear to be using social media, but which demographics use social media in greater numbers?

It appears that women use social media 9% more than men do, at a whopping rate of 71%. Other frontrunners with the highest social network activity in their demographic include city dwellers(70%), Hispanics (72%) and adults with a household income below $30,000 annually (72%).

The most pervasive and consistent divider amongst social media users remains, unsurprisingly, their age. 83% of the young adult demographic (18-29 year olds) use social media, which is well over double the activity of online adults over 65 years old (32%).

Yahoo to Buy Tumblr for $1.1 Billion

Yahoo to Buy Tumblr for $1.1 Billion | Social Media Learning Lab | Scoop.it
Yahoo’s move aims to make up for years of missing out on the growth of social networks and mobile devices.

Excerpts:

The deal would be the largest acquisition of a social networking company in years, surpassing Facebook’s $1 billion purchase of Instagram last year.

Tumblr has over 108 million blogs, with many highly active users.

For Yahoo and its chief executive, Marissa Mayer, buying Tumblr would be a bold move as she tries to breathe new life into the company. The deal, the seventh since Ms. Mayer defected from Google last summer to take over the company, would be her biggest yet.

It is meant to give her company more appeal to young people, and to make up for years of missing out on the revolutions in social networking and mobile devices.

News from Deb:

Now the biggest challenge yet, for Marissa Mayer, culture change at Yahoo AND smart connection with the hip, youthful Tumblr and their 108 million blogs, with many highly active users.  Wordpress watching at the gate.

I do like my venerable, old fashioned Flickr.com photo account. Yet if well handled, the coolness of Tumblr could make a good things happen at Flickr.  Challenge:  the account owners are quite a bit different.  ~  Deb

Robin Good's curator insight, May 6, 1:26 PM

Anthony Kosner on Content.ly analyzes three different news discovery services in order to illustrate the different types of approaches available today to gather and filter streams for a specific audience.

He takes as examples Fuego, Upworthy and Prismatic, which utilize three very different solutions to aggregating and filtering the news in order to provide a relevant stream to their readers.

  • Fuego works by curating - manually - a selected group of thought leaders in the field of journalism. Most everything they post becomes part of Fuego.

  • Upworthy is powered by human curators who decide what makes the news and what doesn't.

  • Prismatic is strong on extracting relevant stories based on specific keywords and on your preferences and interaction with the service itself.

Overall, the article tries to illustrate how different can be the approaches utilized to filter and suggest content to a specific audience.

Interesting. Informative. 6/10
