Content curation is not just collecting, it's also sharing with perspective and commentary. ...we’ve analyzed all the content curated, published and shared through Scoop.it. This post is about sharing these data and learnings so you can be more effective with your content curation. 
     

4 take-aways anyone can implement:
     

1. Publish your curated content to a content hub before sharing it on social media: if you share it to social media only, you only get less than half the traffic and you lose a lot of the new visitors who are in your interest graph but not your social graph and that would come from Google Search.
    

2. Use a mobile-friendly content hub:  content consumption is growingly mobile.

    

3. Use services like Buffer to republish multiple times throughout the day on Twitter: yes, Facebook generates higher clicks but as smart curators have found, the perk of Twitter is it’s ok to repeat a post several times because of it’s real-time nature.

     

4. Automate content monitoring to achieve both quality and quantity: use tools like Scoop.it suggestion engine to be in the top publishers both from a quality and quantity point of view.

Pinterest now beats YouTube, Reddit, Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace for percentage of total referral traffic in January.


Wow!  Pinterest is growing like gangbusters, like an 8000% increase, (another Pinterest post in my Peer/Social Learning & Curation stream here.)  


It remains to be seen what that means for the company and its sustainability.  The monster growth it's showing - is, let's say, promising?


Excerpts from Mashable:


The darling network of brides-to-be, fashionistas and budding bakers now beats YouTube, Reddit, Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace for percentage of total referral traffic in January, according to a Shareaholic study.


Pinterest accounted for 3.6% of referral traffic, while Twitter just barely edged ahead of the newcomer, accounting for 3.61% of referral traffic. In July 2011, Pinterest accounted for just 0.17% of referral traffic, proving the site’s blockbuster growth.

Jeff Bullas spent a bit more time reviewing this Social Media report than he had planned, finding the "revelations compelling."  Those uses of the "R" word got my attention: Research & Revelation:


  • The study was focused on social media utilization – not on adoption.  It's how people and companies are using social media in a work context today.
  • Companies judge social media success by:
  1. Website traffic increase 61%
  2. Engagement with prospects 57%
  3. Brand awareness 54%
  4. Engagement with customers 50%
  5. Revenue 42%  (ROI is NOT the top spot)
  6. Brand reputation 42%
  7. Prospect lead volume 36%
  8. Prospect lead quality 33%
  9. Useful product feedback 23%
  • 46% of US adults now participate in social networks, and a quarter do so weekly, make it increasingly difficult to pigeon-hole social media as something relevant to only specific demographic groups or personal vs. work lives.


It's a juicy, hefty post.  But here's the surprise.  It was written in 2009!
