When [other]  major events happened, such as when Osama bin Laden was killed, and when Mitt Romney mentioned binders during the presidential debates, people instantly came to Twitter – and, in particular, Twitter search – to discover what was happening.


...[there's a] real-time human computation engine we built that allows us to find search queries as soon as they’re trending, ...[these are sent to] real humans to be judged...


...Overview....how the system works.


(1) ...we monitor for which search queries are currently popular.

Behind the scenes: we run a Storm topology that tracks statistics on search queries.

     

For example: the query “Big Bird” may be averaging zero searches a day, but at 6pm on October 3, we suddenly see a spike in searches from the US.


(2) Next, as soon as we discover a new popular search query, we send it to our human evaluation systems, where judges are asked a variety of questions about the query.


Behind the scenes: when [we detect] that a query has reached sufficient popularity, it ...dispatches the query to Amazon’s Mechanical Turk service, and then polls Mechanical Turk for a response.


For example: as soon as we notice “Big Bird” spiking, we may ask judges on Mechanical Turk to categorize the query, or provide other information (e.g., whether there are likely to be interesting pictures of the query, or whether the query is about a person or an event) that helps us serve relevant tweets and ads.

Few of us realize, or understand, the access we give to programs we use every day.

    

Via the Washington Post:  In Facebook’s defense, there are plenty of legitimate reasons for requesting these permissions. Messenger needs access to your camera, for instance, so that you can send pictures, and few people would want to confirm microphone access every time they use the app to place a call.
     

....Our collective ignorance over this whole app permissions thing probably explains the hullabaloo over Messenger. Yes, it’s potentially “insidious,” to quote Fiorella, but so are WhatsApp, Viber, MessageMe and virtually every other popular messaging app, all of which request comparably creepy permissions.

I logged out of my mobile Facebook account due to video data usage.  I uninstalled Facebook Messenger too as it was just a bit too intrusive to my taste,   Now it's good to review just what you need in order for the app to work in the first place, like most apps.  It's all about the data they collect that funds the way they do business.  ~  D

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has previously filed complaints against Facebook, and was largely successful in their efforts.  Their current formal complaint asks the agency to begin an investigation, and comes in response to the news that Facebook manipulated the News Feeds of 689,003 users.

The the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) 2012 settlement with Facebook followed from a Complaint filed by EPIC and a coalition of privacy and civil liberties organization in December 2009 and a Supplemental Complaint filed by EPIC in February 2010.  In that matter, the FTC settled charges that Facebook “deceived consumers by telling them they could keep their information on Facebook private, and then repeatedly allowing it to be shared and made public.”

Count I: Deceptive Failure to Inform Users that their Data Would Be Shared With Third-Party Researchers

Count II: Unfair Failure to Inform Users That They Were Subject to Behavioral Testing

Count III: Violation of the 2012 Consent Order

I have Instagram on my iPhone.  I'm still a fan of the venerable Flickr, but Instagram is very easy & fun to use.  Simple and intuitive makes a big difference in iPhone apps, as well as apps suitable to Facebook posting. ~  Deb

F-commerce = a failed experiment as Gap, JCPenney shutter their Facebook stores. Gamestop has company.

Excerpt:  Over the past year, Gap Inc., JC Penney Co. and Nordstrom Inc. have all opened and closed storefronts on Facebook Inc.'s social networking site.

"We just didn’t get the return on investment we needed from the Facebook market, so we shut it down pretty quickly," Sheetz said in a telephone interview. "For us, it’s been a way we communicate with customers on deals, not a place to sell."

Gap, which has 5.6 million Facebook fans from its namesake, Banana Republic and Old Navy pages, opened and discontinued a storefront last year, said Liz Nunan, a company spokeswoman. The San Francisco-based company also discovered customers preferred shopping on its own sites, she said.

Those who rely on Dropbox to store their personal files may have lost some of their data. The service has experienced some issues regarding a bug in older versions of its available desktop apps. This bug deleted files uploaded by affected users who activated the Selective Sync feature, leading some to find they'd lost a large amount of files. 


...Should you be one of the select few who have been affected by this bug, Dropbox has been reaching out to customers via email with an apology and offer for a year's worth of Dropbox Pro for free.

Nice to see SI moving along.  I haven't read this and I wonder if it's the news I read a few weeks ago.  At any rate I think SI is getting a bit ahead in the race between them and RebelMouse.  

 

I've had an issue in the UI with RM for almost 2 months and they don't seem inclined to do anything about it....but SI has always worked fine.

Moving to the forefront of social media privacy law nationwide, the Maryland General Assembly has passed legislation prohibiting employers in the state from asking current and prospective employees for their user names and passwords to websites...


It was only a matter of time, and the time is now.

Other states are considering similar legislation, including Illinois and California.


The bill, drafted in response to a state agency's scouring the personal Facebook posts of prison guard applicants, also could be a bellwether for federal action.


Two U.S. senators — Chuck Schumer of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, both Democrats — have asked the Department of Justice and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to investigate the issue.

"The Google Glasses are real!"  Project Glass, augmented reality lenses from Google, is already being tested by Google employees, including company co-founder Sergei Brin.


This video is already making the rounds on Facebook among my friends.  I wanted to share it here, as it foreshadows social media ease/connection.  


It is also spot on for a precursor of 10 year trend forecasting by Bob Johanssen that allows for virtual/digital alteration of your space, via the ACMP 2012 global change conference, and is representative, I think, of Google media relationship charm.

This week Google officially confirmed the existence of Project Glass, a prototype pair of augmented reality goggles, which will allow users to see maps and chats and take photographs or notes without once reaching down for their smart phones.


"The Google Glasses are real!" popular blogger, Robert Scoble wrote in the Twitter message. Later he added that the goggles "look very light weight. Not much different than a regular set of glasses."

Regardless of where you may stand on the issues, once thing is clear from the Beth Katner post cited here - define the conversation, or your public will do it for you..


The photo of PINK items on this post is being shared widely via Pinterest, Facebook an in other LARGE social media channels in protest to the Komen news about funding for breast cancer screening and Planned Parenthood.  


Current update: 

Planned Parenthood gains $650,000 in 24 hours, enough to replace the lost funding from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Foundation.  Source:  The Washington Post

From Beth's network, Kivi Leroux-Miller lays out a case study documenting the social media response and provided an analysis about why it happened. As Kivi says,

Watch and learn, so you don’t make the same mistake on whatever hot button issues your organization might be wading into.


Kivi has also written about “newsjacking” the technique of piggy backing on a crisis to get more media attention.


Kivi's blog post, featuring her newsjacking timely example, was about a lack of response by the Komen organization to a viral / big news story.    Sorry, regardless of your personal views of this situation, the BIG cautionary tale here is that ignoring social media only makes the situation worse.  Here's Kivi's newsjacking Komen story, to wit:

  • I really didn’t think about the newsjacking potential of the post until I got into writing the commentary, and decided to really call out Komen for the lack of responsiveness to their supporters. 
  • I knew it would be a good lesson for my blog readers, but then mid-morning, Komen posted on Facebook (but still not on Twitter), and I found the response to be really lacking given the outrage.
