 Earlier this month, Facebook dropped a bombshell by not only acknowledging that Facebook pages’ organic reach was declining but also by telling us we should not expect them to recover.

Facebook’s VP of Product for Facebook Ads, Brian Boland, went on to explain that this is the new world we live in now, that the same thing happened with search engines before and that we’d better get used to it. It’s true that many platforms go through a similar cycle: first, they present a great free opportunity, then more and more people grab it - decreasing the return for everyone until finally, the platform focuses on those ready to pay for play.

It happened with Google Search; it happened with Apps (yes, Apple doesn’t sell ads but others do - such as coincidentally... Facebook). And now that all social media are publicly-traded company with ambitious revenue targets to reach, it will happen to social media as well.

Over the past couple years, religionistas of all sorts have attempted to navigate a new media landscape in which old constructions of religious authority, identity, affiliation, and practice are changing almost by the minute.

Trends the author has noticed reshaping religion and spirituality (Excerpted, great stuff in the full post, including many live links to examples):

1. Social Prayer
Throughout 2011, the “Jesus Daily” Facebook page has outranked soccer superpowers and celebrity superstars like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber as the “most engaging” locale on Facebook. …more than half of the top twenty most engaging pages—pages that move beyond mere broadcast messaging to share content that inspires participants to interact with one another—are religious.

2. Ministers-On-The-Go
The location based service (LBS) Foursquare reached 10 million users this summer —a 10,000 percent increase over its member base in 2009. While there are questions about whether all those members are active, and bigger ones about whether Foursquare will be able to hold its own against LBS applications now offered by Facebook (which just acquired LBS competitor Gowalla) and Google, it’s clear that the social practice of “checking in” wherever you are is taking hold across social media platforms.

3. O Holy App
With more than half a million apps now available for the iPhone or iPad, and maybe 232 for the Android, it’s clear that the number of religiously-themed apps is growing. Prayer book apps, those for on-the-go spiritual practices, and other tools that integrate spirituality into everyday life have been most popular.
If the folks at Nielsen are correct, smartphones will continue to overtake, uh, dumb phones, making app-based connection and information-sharing a continuing growth area.

4. Curate as Curator
Religionistas who can curate content that facilitates online and offline connection will earn more stars in the digital book of everyday life than those who …(oh, sweet mother of mercy, please make it stop!) their latest sermon.

5. A Few New Commandments
In 2009, the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut was among the first to offer social media guidelines. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishop published social media guidelines. The USCCB guidelines have a similar tone to those from the Diocese of Connecticut, with charming definitions of things like “web 2.0” and “blogs.”

There are several good reasons not to pay much attention to the so-called demise of Google+, the new social media channel slated as a contender with Facebook. Yes, it's social, and so is YouTube, which Google owns and uses to reach out to a large audience (22,000) of social and tech-minded folks in this series of videos.

Google emcee's this tech leader event with Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Computer Science Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, who talks about the first digital spreadsheets and the playful, hobbyists' spirit that found its way into enterprise IT, e.g. the Google ethos.


Here's the real reason that Google+ makes sense, eventually there will be powerful, artificial intelligence integration with a lot of good stuff, Google apps.   I have a Google calendar, as do several of my clients and business partners.  I have several Google email accounts, professional (branded) and personal.  I love that Gmail knows how to prioritize my load of email and 98% of the time gets it right. Many businesses are using other Google apps besides what I've listed as my go-to tools.

Bradley Horowitz (VP Product Management, Google) talks about
Google + as more than a social network.

"We aspire to build a different type of relationship with our users, creating a means for users to create who they are to return improved results and better quality of service."  

He mentions Google learning to provide value to user long term interests like kite surfing.  Google+ has plans to integrate Google docs in a Google+ circles. He says that:

  • search and maps will get better,
  •  your phone will get smarter, and 
  • Gmail will get even better.

Think of the jobs-creation these new tools might influence.

Educate both the workforce and leaders on what social media is and how to access its power.

Retool to welcome the millennial workforce who takes access to social technologies as a given.

The study also states:

  • very few [companies] are anywhere near to achieving the full potential benefit of social media.

  • the most powerful applications of social technologies in the global economy are largely untapped

No. 1: Consumer revolution

Thanks largely to social media, Occupy Wall Street has become a global movement.

Twitter, Facebook and sites like work in conjunction, allowing local, national and global communities to form, organize and apply pressure en masse to achieve a common goal.

When Bank of America first announced plans to charge monthly debit card fees, a 22 year-old nanny started a petition to shame the bank for accepting taxpayer bailout funds and then gouging their customers. Bank of America backed down after 300,000 people signed her petition.

Critics say that the 40,000 people who joined credit unions on "Bank Transfer Day" (Nov. 5) was minimal, but 2012 will bring more reminders to banks and other corporations that they answer to more than investment banks, shareholders and special interests -- they answer to their customers.
