Focusing on the size of your audience is definitely the wrong approach. As I always say, before thinking of gaining new followers, make sure you know the ones who already support you. Build a relationship with them, make them feel like they matter.

What's the point of having 500,000 fans if only 10 or 20 pay attention to what you do? Focus on how you can change a few lives instead.

This article outlines 6 tips for companies that market through their Instagram accounts. With an estimated count of 150 million users, Instagram has grown immensely since it was launched in 2010, and there are no signs of it slowing down. Simply posting photos of products and attempting to "sell" on a company's account could actual drive away followers. Instead, companies should strive to create a dynamic account and Instagram community. The fundamentals include learning to listen, creating engaging conversations, and posting ingenious images. However, to get the most of of Instagram, businesses should use the following six tips. First, connect your channels and ensure that a user can access the company website, Facebook, twitter and any other social networks of the company. This will allow for cross promotion among a wide variety of networks. Second, post quality, personable visuals. This goes along with the idea of not just "selling" products but presenting them in a personable, maybe even gritty way that is more relatable. Thirdly, use hashtags. This will allow posts to become a trending topic on Instagram or twitter. This will make a company's post to be viewable to people that do not already follow and may increase acquisition of followers. Fourthly, be interesting and genuine. This includes posting fun and entertainment content, and even following some followers back and responding to their comments. Fifthly, host a contest. This will be both beneficial to the company and the users as they will win some type of prize while the company will gain buzz and ideas. Lastly, plan your posts. Peak times for posting vary by social network and can be researched and put into action. For example, posting on Facebook on a Friday or Saturday night is probably not the best time as users will likely be out enjoying the weekend.
