Storify

Storify | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Great curation and news production tool enabling journalists to gather assets from Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, the web, RSS, blogs and Storify itself and then to create asset-rich stories which, when published, are virally disseminated.

I am using this a lot in training courses with great results. What's also useful is that you can embed the stories you create in most blogs by just copy and pasting the script across.

Here is my Storify http://storify.com/helpingmedia and here is how one story, created with Storify, has been imported into my Joomla site http://bit.ly/eQr9X3.

Posterous

Posterous | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
My current favourite micro-blogging tool that enables you to update the site via email and upload text, images and video from your smartphone or computer.

I use this a lot in training because it enables great collaboration and teams can create sites in half a day.

Some nice themes, too, which you can customise. My Posterous is at http://mediahelpingmedia.posterous.com/

Pearltrees

Pearltrees | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Great curation tools for teaming up with people to organise, discover and share the stuff you like. (Different purpose than Scoop.it or Curated.by).

I like this because others can share material with me and, together, we can create peals of information for all to benefit from.

TwitterSheep

TwitterSheep | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
More than a bit of fun, this nifty tool 'herds' your followers, checks out what they tweet about and then creates a word cloud of the key words.

Click on a word and then click on 'see your flock' to get to know more about your Twitter network. Great potential for contacts building and news gathering.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
LinkedIn is an important tool for journalist networking. It strengthens and extends your existing network of trusted contacts. I currently have more than 500 connections and, if you enter your career details carefully LinkedIn can result in work. I have had three contracts through LinkedIn. Here is my site http://www.linkedin.com/in/mediaideas

Paper.li

Paper.li | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
A daily newspaper built from all the articles, blog posts, videos and photos shared on Twitter or Facebook. You can make your paper out of the tweets of those you follow, a Twitter list or with a #hashtag.

You can also set it to auto-tweet every edition, but be careful, some consider this twitter spam, so I turned my auto-tweet off and, as a result, views and retweets have fallend dramaticially.

I use this a lot in training by getting all participants to tweet with a particular #hashtag and then I create a paper made up of all the tweets with that tag in.

Here is my Paper.li. http://paper.li/helpingmedia

HootSuite

HootSuite | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
My preferred Twitter aggregator when on the move. From the site's blurb: "HootSuite - Online Social Media Dashboard. With HootSuite, you can monitor keywords, manage multiple Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Ping.fm and WordPress profiles, schedule messages, and measure your success."

Storyful

Storyful | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Similar to Storify in that it is an online content management system that enables you to include assets in your story from Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Google search and RSS feeds.

However, Storyful then presents your contribution alongside others in a portal of contributions where all can comment and share. I have signed up, and it looks great, but I still need to test it.

Twitter Network Browser

Twitter Network Browser | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
I find this tool a great help for finding new Twitter contacts. If I see an interesting tweet and want to find out more about the person who tweeted it I can put their name in the search box and see those in his/her network who recently tweeted or retweeted.

Click on that persons box and their network expands. And on it goes. Great for newsgathering.

It looks like Quora is in a phase of crossing the chasm between early adopters and mainstream. If they pass this phase successfully it will be great value for all of us.

Tweetcloud

Tweetcloud | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Another way for journalists to generate word clouds based on what they have said (your Twitter user name) or on topics. Then click on the resulting words to display a list of relevant tweets.

Of course you can then click on the name and try to connect with any interesting contacts or just join the conversations as part of the news gathering and news dissemination process.

TweetDeck

TweetDeck | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Unlike Hootsuite, which is browser-based, you have to download TweetDeck. It's a great personal browser for staying in touch with what’s happening now, connecting you with your contacts across Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and more. You can post to multiple sources.

Livestation

Livestation | Social media kitbag | Scoop.it
Download the Livestation player to watch live TV and get screen grabs and Tweet them via Twitpic.

This is great for anyone who wants to grab breaking news footage and tweet it using Twitpics. You can then use Storify or Storyful to bring that asset into your reports.

You can also chat with other viewers to gain perspectives and enter the global conversation around breaking news. Livestation can be viewed online, too, at http://www.livestation.com/.

[Declaration of interest: I have helped Livestation as a content strategy consultant and still have an interest in the company.]

Matt's comment, March 16, 2011 10:09 AM
Al Jazeera, BBC, Press TV, NHK and lots more. I have been using the client for a long time and the screen grab from live feature is very useful. Chatting with viewers around the world to get their reactions to news is also quite insightful.
helpingmedia's comment, March 16, 2011 11:25 AM
Hi Matt, have you found it useful at all in creating stories?
Matt's comment, March 16, 2011 12:51 PM
Yes I have as it gave me background information, ability to talk to people following the story live and get live screen grabs in seconds. Quite useful.
