Why A Brand Matters - Forbes

Why A Brand Matters - Forbes | Social Media Journal | Scoop.it
In one sense, perhaps the most important sense, a brand is a promise. Think of some top brands and you immediately know what they promise: McDonald’s, Coca Cola, Budweiser, Ford, Apple, MetLife.

Ben Hamer's curator insight, March 21, 2013 12:40 AM

This is a strong article because it discusses the importance of brand management which largely includes the brands image to consumers. This included physical traits such as the logo, font, words, design and colours etc but then their is the emotional traits a brand contains, this is what consumers first thoughts are when they see a branded product or hear a brand said aloud. The article uses Volvo as an example by saying people's first thoughts are "Well built, comfortable, Swedish and safety." Another example of this is Apple, when a consumer thinks of Apple words like 'attractive', 'modern', 'flash' and 'state of the art' are often thought of. All in all, a brands goal is to firstly deliver on their promise and also maintain their signature look, personality and attributes which the article likes to call ""me" appeal."

Danielle X's comment, March 21, 2013 4:42 AM
Make sense, brand is very crucial for business, brand is what business stands for. But it is very hard to build a brand, it takes lots of time, money and resources. However, a well-branded product can generate tons of fortune for the business. A good brand has to have its unique image, brand identity, personality etc, and it has to cooperate with right marketing communications and strategies. So a brand does matters!
Mohammed Bin Afif's comment, March 21, 2013 7:45 PM
A good article but I think it fails to describe the importance of the product. For example, coke has a very good brand and reputation yet "new Coke" made sales plummet. Also, people who like Apple are still buying Samsung Galaxy's because of the features and technology. Yes, when a brand works and has positive responses by the market it should be promoted and all marketing should adopt IMC to collectively push the positive attributes of the brand and not confuse the customers with different promises. A business must live up to its brand otherwise the business will suffer, so it can't promote its self as something it is not just to develop its brand.

A webpage that shows a lot of social shares appears much more authoritative as compared to a webpage with few social shares. This has been corroborated by research data that shows content activity from social media channels weighs into rankings on search engines. The importance of links as a ranking parameter is less likely to cease as they evolve into a new role that indicates the importance of social media activity as a ranking factor.

Here are 20 social signals that Google tracks to determine ranking based on various social media activities on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon & Foursquare.  http://goo.gl/wBvVDM

Susan Kay Daniels's comment, March 16, 2013 4:15 PM
That's an interesting comment. I'm 59 and been laid off twice in the last three years - employers don't want to pay the higher insurance rates for us older gals nor do they want to pay us what we're worth. So, I am developing my blog to cater to people who are new to social media. I have over 45 years experience operating computers, have been online since it's inception and I want to give my knowledge to those who need it. It may surprise you to know that it isn't the baby boomers who lack the skills for online social and graphic skills. I've operated computers since 1973. I think the lack of computer knowledge, in terms of age groups, is more prevalent in my mother's generation. But, by golly, she is 82 years old, owns a iphone (grumbles about it a lot) and upgraded from a lap top to a tablet last winter. She's had a desktop in her office for 20 years. And, she's on Facebook (grumbles about that too :). And, we're from a small town in Eastern Oregon (yes, we have real life cowboys :) So, I guess the point I'm making is as long as people are willing, technology can be learned at any age. Thanks for commenting on my newsletter. Warmly, Susan
Anne Bosworth's comment, March 16, 2013 7:23 PM
I know those folks too, Susan. I don't doubt that you are exactly right about the willingness, creativity, hard work, and tenacity of older folks using technology. But I suspect that plenty of late Boomers are finding themselves surprised by what they need to do to get a second look for an interview, and yes, disappointed that their worth is so severely undervalued. I have several friends, myself included, recently laid off and we've all been a bit taken by surprise to find that replacing our employment and our salaries is so difficult. I'm sure we will all be learning how to build and refine our social résumés. By the way, I love your post and your knowledge. You professional creds and tenacity remind me a great deal of a woman whom I know, admire, and cherish very much. Blessings, Anne.
