Cassi Henderson's insight:

Social Media has become very beneficial for many different companies. This article talks about how a simple competition between a few local companies have made them known.  The Westin St. Louis, Timmerman Group and Total Hockey have all noticed significant changes in their "likes" and "followers" on the different social media networks.

Timmerman group said that bigger nationwide companies have helped them out by getting their name out in other states and because of this, they have gained more potential customers.

I really think Social Media will end up become more business-focused in the future.  Companies wil rely on these networks to promote themselves and their products.

St. Louis sports has been boosted by the social media thats been in affect. The Cardinals got a lot of support during the World Series online. Its been great, some companies even offer free hotels rooms and things with the support. Everyone is trying for one cause to support the local sports teams. I no the Blues have a lot of support as well, and slowly the Rams are on there way, they are getting better each year so the support of the fans and the PR that they get is getting better and will continue to do so.

Cassi Henderson's insight:

It is amazing to see the many different ways that Social Media networks are being used these days.  Chris Sommers, the founder of a company called Givver, is using Twitter as a charity donation service.

Sommers has made July 15 "Social Media Giving Day."  He has set up this notion so that people can donate to their favorite charities.  What they have to do is tag their charity of choice and add #GIVE with the dollar amount that they choose.  Doing this through Twitter avoids the text message charges that may apply.  I think this is a great idea and that more people will catch on.

Cassi Henderson's insight:

This article really focuses on the fact that promoting companies on social media networks is the way to go.  Brett Gordon says that Facebook is the best way to promote a company.  He says that it has been drilled in his head that you need to be where your customers are and where prospective customers are.  This is exactly what our book says also.  Companies should observe first and build relationships with their customers and then try to sell their products.

Gordon suggests for someone who wants to start a company and gradually "grow" that Facebook is the best thing for that.  You build a fan base by the number of likes you get, just like celebrities, athletes, etc.  In this article, Gordon gives you steps to successfully market on Facebook.

With the growth of Social Media networks, it is important to stay up to date with it.  That is exactly what this article talks about.  Professor Drake at University of Missouri St. Louis has helped the University ramp up the social and digital media program offerings.

He has created new and changed existing marketing and PR classes so that they are up to date with the newest forms of technology.  Drake said, “It is imperative that universities begin to seriously change their marketing curriculums to reflect the evolution of marketing and business being driven by technology or they will be outdated and irrelevant."  I agree with this statement because we are the beginning of the technology generation and we have to stay on top of it to know how to use it.

WIth Social Media being the new hot thing, everybody wants a Twitter and Facebook account.  How do you tell young kids that they are not allowed to have one of these accounts because you fear for their safety?  A man from the St. Louis has come up with an answer for this question.

Jimmy Brauer has created a product called "Kool Kardz."  His main purpose of this product is to let younger kids get the experience of social media networks without being a target for sexual predators.  Brauer's target audience is kids ages kindergarten to sixth grade.

See me, hear me: Has social media turned us into narcissists?

There may be people you haven't spoken to in ages, but you know when they've conquered a new level in Candy Crush Saga or how many miles they crushed in their last run.
Cassi Henderson's insight:

We all have those people on our Twitter and Facebook pages that post about everything from what they are doing at the moment to what they ate for breakfast.  Has social media turned us into narcissists and we are using these networks as a form of a diary/journal?

In this article, three researchers did a study to see if this was so.  They studied how often people post on these networks and results of a self-reported score on a scale of narcissistic personality traits.

We have to ask ourselves though, is it narcissistic or is it becoming normative?  It seems that people posting like this is the norm.

Washington University in St. Louis - Social Media Policy: http://t.co/q2myUucVEA #hesm
Cassi Henderson's insight:

I think it is important for schools to have links to social media networks. It is any easier way for them to keep in contact with their students.  I think these networks should only be a means for communicating information with the students.

In this article, Washington University describes that they have had problems with their students' posts in the past with social media sites.  All of the sites have to go through the Office of Public Affairs to make sure it is appropriate material.  At any time, the Office of Public Affairs has the right to routinely review and if needed, remove a site.
