Times have changed. Our graduating seniors can no longer rely on a one page resume to get their first job out of college. Our students need a strong digital reputation of which they can be proud and share with others. Some of our students may not want or be fit for the traditional career path, which is even more of a reason for them to leverage the digital tools that are available to them. Digital leadership skills will not only be necessary for them to obtain in order to be successful in their

I absolutely love these ten ideas of how to use Instagram in the classroom. It seems to be geared toward elementary students. High school students are already using social media like crazy, but elementary students not so much. Using it in the classroom will give them exposure to it and they can be taught safe and responsible ways to use it in the process. However, elementary teachers are the most reluctant to incorporate into their lessons. Maybe this will motivate them. I know it would be very engaging for the students!

The latest social networking trend with students can change pretty quickly. Colleges have to keep up with the latest apps in order to reach their target markets. Some colleges are even using Snapchat. One of the colleges on the list is University of Houston. I wonder if they hire someone to manage this full-time? That would be a fun job!

Anybody who still sings that tired old line about "but these aren't 'real' relationships" is not able to tune into the reality that this is not a fad, nor a developmental stage, but a multicultural issue. Social media is a culture; it is one of the key ways many of us choose to relate, and live, and connect these days.

Training Teachers in Digital Skills with Reality TV Techniques | Mediashift | PBS | Exploring Social Media in Education | Scoop.it
How might reality television techniques be used to more effectively train teachers and students?
Josie Ahlquist's insight:

It’s time to rethink “professional development.” As it stands, teacher training often exists as a required one-day or two-day live session where teachers gain a few tips, some handouts, and a binder that ends up on a shelf. The intent of these professional development programs is to bring about change in teachers’ practices and attitudes, and in student learning outcomes. However, there is an entire body of research that shows most programs fall short.

Candace Theriot's curator insight, October 19, 2015 5:59 AM

This is a very insightful article. We assume that since millennials are digital natives that they are experts on how to use social media tools. However, they are not using them effectively and to their advantage. If we could fine-tune their habits to actually benefit them, they would be set for success in today's world. The article mentions that there are great online courses for this. I'm interested in taking these myself! I have the mature judgement but not the know-how. They have the know-how but not the mature judgement. Combining the two is the key! Number one on the list is my favorite. There are some adults that need a refresher on this one as well.

The entrance to GitHub is the most Instagram-able lobby in tech. It's a recreation of the Oval Office, and the mimicry is spot-on---except for the rug. Instead of the arrow-clutching American eagle that graces Obama's office rug, it shows the code-sharing site's Octocat mascot gazing into the digital future, just above the motto: "In Collaboration We Trust."
Josie Ahlquist's insight:

The problem, he said, is lack of professional development, and the consequence is lack of equal opportunity for students: “We need a teacher who’s comfortable at teaching coding in every school in the United States.”

"In some cases, academic social networks have been limited by restrictions placed on the research. Last year, for example, publisher Elsevier sent takedown notices for almost 3,000 articles on Academia.edu.
