4 [Social Media] Failures and a Success | Social Media Today | Social Media Guru | Scoop.it
The internet is full of articles claiming to transform the reader into the Social Media equivalent of Charles Atlas. I have written some of them myself (though hopefully while highlighting that that things are seldom as simple as ticking a set of boxes). Bearing in mind the old adage that you learn more from your mistakes than your successes, here are some thoughts on Social Media failures; the first three are mine and the fourth a failure that seems very widespread. Lest this article becomes too depressing, I will close with a more positive piece of Social Media news

Starwood's storytelling contest and the lure of Facebook

Starwood's storytelling contest and the lure of Facebook | Social Media Guru | Scoop.it
THE STARWOOD hotel chain's "Four Points by Sheraton" sub-brand, which is targeted toward business travellers, is holding a contest to find the funniest, most outrageous business travel story—"the more unique the better." There's a $25,000 prize for the winner. Interestingly, you enter via Facebook—apparently Four Points thinks getting business travellers to "like" their Facebook page is so important that they are willing to pay $25,000 to encourage the practice.

Each Facebook fan worth 20 website visits :: StrategyEye - Industry Intelligence | Social Media Guru | Scoop.it
Just one consumer ‘liking’ a retailer on Facebook drives 20 visits to the firm’s website, according to Hitwise analyst, Robin Goad, in another indication of the social network’s influence online. Goad claims that even with no Facebook fans, retailers can expect some 62,000 visits via the social network per month, with the traffic generated through ‘likes’ creating more sales, both online and offline. The stats are likely to fuel marketing campaigns on Facebook, as brands and retailers continue to vie for the attention of the site’s near-700m users worldwide.

Twitter to ramp up ad visibility – Rumour :: StrategyEye - Industry Intelligence

Twitter to ramp up ad visibility – Rumour :: StrategyEye - Industry Intelligence | Social Media Guru | Scoop.it
Twitter is reportedly considering placing promoted tweets in users’ live streams as the microblogging site continues its attempts to better monetise its audience. The Financial Times, citing people with direct knowledge of Twitter’s plans, claims that it has already trialled the move on third-party app HootSuite. The move is reportedly one of a number of initiatives that Twitter is considering, including offering a daily deals platform similar to Groupon. Twitter’s new head of revenue, Adam Bain, is seeking to generate new revenues streams off the back of the success of Twitter’s ‘promoted’ ad suite as Twitter seeks to emulate Facebook’s money-making exploits.

If confirmed, the move risks angering a number of Twitter’s 300m members, as
