New Jersey's New Social Media Law Blocks Employers' Prying Eyes | Social Media for Workforce Development | Scoop.it
An increasing number of Americans are using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, both on and off the job.
Mike Ellsworth's insight:

Good news: "The New Jersey State Governor signed into law legislation that prohibits employers from requiring or requesting current and prospective employees to disclose their social media passwords. New Jersey’s new law covers all employers (including any agent or representative), except for state and county corrections departments, the state parole board, and state and local law enforcement agencies" starting in December, 2013. Twelve states now have similar protections.

Recruiters Find Limits to Large Social Networks – ExecuNet Survey
Mike Ellsworth's insight:

It had to happen. Recruiters on LinkedIn are finding themselves deluged with unwanted connection requests from unqualified candidates and unsolicited resumes.

In the survey, "45% concluded large, public networks make it difficult to build relationships with the right talent." So recruiters may move to smaller, more-specialized social networks.

Are all your social media eggs in one basket? - The risk of focusing just on Facebook or Twitter

Are all your social media eggs in one basket? - The risk of focusing just on Facebook or Twitter | Social Media for Workforce Development | Scoop.it

If you are focused just on one or two social media channels, such as Facebook or Twitter, you need to rethink your approach.

Ever since the demise of platforms such asFriendster and thenMySpace, the social media landscape is littered with the corpses of once-great leaders.

More recently, the popular blogging platform Posterous announced it was closing its doors.

Mike Ellsworth's insight:

This post is great food for thought if your company is just focusing on the Big 4 social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube). While YouTube and LinkedIn are probably the least likely to fold or be renedered irrelevant in the short term, anything can happen.

The rise of moble and the visually-oriented sites such as Pinterest, Instagram, and even Vine might threaten existing dominant platforms. Is you social strategy flexible enough to adapt to changes in the landscape? We'd love to hear what you think, below.

Definition of a Talent Community - CollegeRecruiter.com | Social Media for Workforce Development | Scoop.it
Mike Ellsworth's insight:

I like Gautam Ghosh's definition of talent community quoted in this article:

Talent communities are where people go to connect with fellow professionals and learn. Hence they are more “communities of practice” than anything else.Talent communities are [also] places one goes to find experts.Talent communities are [also] places one goes to build their own personal career brand.Companies must engage in talent communities by letting [THEIR] internal experts connect with and build their own networks. The best Talent Community Facilitator would be an expert in the roles – not necessarily a recruiter. The focus on jobs/recruiting has to be secondary to the above.

A great collection of pithy stats about social selling, B2C and B2B.

This one, however, is troubling: 79% of consumers like a Facebook company page because it offers discounts and incentives. If all you have to say to your customers is, "I can get it for you cheap" - that's hardly a relationship, is it?

Although there's not a ton of companies using Twitter extensively for talent sourcing, there are plenty of businesses and job seekers using the service to connect with one another.

"Kathryn Minshew, founder and chief executive of career-resource site TheMuse.com, for one, is an advocate of the 140-character résumé.

Should Employers Be Allowed To Prevent Workers From Sharing Their Salary Information?

Should Employers Be Allowed To Prevent Workers From Sharing Their Salary Information? | Social Media for Workforce Development | Scoop.it

There are a variety of social norms around talking about wages and salaries. It’s often considered rude to ask someone what they are paid, and this is sometimes true within workplaces. In fact some employers go so far as to not permit workers to share wage and salary information with each other. Employers would be banned from doing this by the Paycheck Fairness Act, which has failed to pass in congress twice. Is this a good idea?

Mike Ellsworth's insight:

OK, this seems like a restraint of free speech if Congress were to pass a law prohibiting employees from sharing their salary information with one another.
