Interestingly most of these incidents have resulted from people accidentally posting something "intended for another account", as if saying it elsewhere might be somehow less stupid or offensive. Admittedly if you post something in poor taste on your own account it might not cost you your job, but it'll damage your own reputation which could be just as bad in the long run.

The points she makes in this talk are not only applicable to artists, they're also a great introduction to anyone who has tried using social media but recognises they just don't get it. Naturally these are American numbers but they can map roughly to the UK market. The over 65s are still in a disappointing minority on every platform. Surprisingly MySpace has still got dominance in the under-17 market. Given the differences in the two educational systems, it's not worth reading too much into the stats for the UK and on the income chart unsurprisingly the high earners tend to favour LinkedIn. The male/female balance is also worth a look - it's not just Pinterest where women are in the majority. It's also interesting to see that Ning has been included as well as Stumbleupon (which still refuses to die, yay!). Delete the scoop?

Facebook appears to be aggressively removing cover photos that it deems too promotional or in violation of copyright.

We've been thinking about providing supporters with images they could use as their Facebook cover photos. However in light of this it's probably not worth the effort.

Thanks for flagging this up. I'd say it's worth sticking with the Facebook cover images for supporters for now, unless you hear they start getting removed. Even if they do, charities could simply switch to providing compelling graphics for supporters to share. Given most views are in the personal feed rather than on a brand's page, they'll probably get seen more anyway.
Am trying a more advert-like cover image on UK Fundraising's page for the first time to see if that gets removed.

My reluctance comes down to resources - we've got one designer who's pretty much backed up at present. Not sure it's best use of his time to create content that might not be useable. The tempting alternative is to put the assets out there and see what supporters can do with them instead. UGC might be more acceptable in this case anyway. I'll be watching your experiment with interest (and not thinking about canaries and mineshafts at all!)
