How to Avoid the Big 5 Social Media Mistakes Corporations Make - Forbes

Actually this is more of a positive list of Do's with lots of encouraging examples rather than a nightmare list of Don'ts. In brief:
It's OK to have fun and an indivual voice rather than be bland and boring
You need to keep working at it and respond promptly. It shouldn't just be a tick-box exercise.

The State of B2B Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

The State of B2B Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media for Macmillan folk | Scoop.it
Here is an infographic (by Frankwatching) to show you the state of B2B social media in 2013. Takeaways: - The main objective for social media marketers in B2
Carol Naylor's insight:

Interesting that Facebook actually ranks FOURTH in importance out of the main platforms, lower than YouTube even. I assume this is because the main focus of most strategies is to drive traffic to websites rather than engage with target audiences on the platform itself.

Demographics of Social Networks: Who's Who? [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media Today

Demographics of Social Networks: Who's Who? [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media Today | Social Media for Macmillan folk | Scoop.it
Carol Naylor's insight:

Naturally these are American numbers but they can map roughly to the UK market.  The over 65s are still in a disappointing minority on every platform.  Surprisingly MySpace has still got dominance in the under-17 market. Given the differences in the two educational systems, it's not worth reading too much into the stats for the UK and on the income chart unsurprisingly the high earners tend to favour LinkedIn. The male/female balance is also worth a look - it's not just Pinterest where women are in the majority. It's also interesting to see that Ning has been included as well as Stumbleupon (which still refuses to die, yay!).

Facebook Cover Photos Are Disappearing

Facebook Cover Photos Are Disappearing | Social Media for Macmillan folk | Scoop.it
Facebook appears to be aggressively removing cover photos that it deems too promotional or in violation of copyright.
Carol Naylor's insight:

We've been thinking about providing supporters with images they could use as their Facebook cover photos. However in light of this it's probably not worth the effort.

Howard Lake's comment, February 12, 4:07 AM
Thanks for flagging this up. I'd say it's worth sticking with the Facebook cover images for supporters for now, unless you hear they start getting removed. Even if they do, charities could simply switch to providing compelling graphics for supporters to share. Given most views are in the personal feed rather than on a brand's page, they'll probably get seen more anyway.

Am trying a more advert-like cover image on UK Fundraising's page for the first time to see if that gets removed.
Carol Naylor's comment, February 12, 8:16 AM
My reluctance comes down to resources - we've got one designer who's pretty much backed up at present. Not sure it's best use of his time to create content that might not be useable. The tempting alternative is to put the assets out there and see what supporters can do with them instead. UGC might be more acceptable in this case anyway. I'll be watching your experiment with interest (and not thinking about canaries and mineshafts at all!)
Howard Lake's comment, February 12, 8:31 AM
Yes, with limited design resources I can appreciate your focus.

This inforgraphic provides stats for the most popular adverts aired during Super Bowl 2013, based on social media data, including spread and sentiment.
Carol Naylor's insight:

OK, so I don't like sports and these companies are commercial rather than NFPs. However the measures of value are interesting.

Number of tweets are important rather than influence of tweeters (not sure I agree with that), number of new followers is an objective (although I would have expected them all to get more than they did) and the final evaluation is based on cost/follower for the ads and cost/tweet.  Perhaps they'll do increased sales later....

Amanda Palmer has an instinct for using social media effectively. The points she makes in this talk are not only applicable to artists, they're also a great introduction to anyone who has tried using social media but recognises they just don't get it.  She gives a practical example of the right way to think about it - as something more than another comms channel, a way of making a two-way connection with your audience.  This talk also offers some alternative insights on mindset behind peoples' reluctance to ask for help - definitely of interest to fundraisers.
