December 31, 2015 - How’s this for clinical outcomes: A home healthcare facility struggling with a 40 percent readmission rate tests a social media-based communications platform for its care team members. During the three-month pilot this past spring, the readmission rate drops to 11 percent. When the pilot ends, the readmission rate jumps back up to 40 percent.

Based on that success, Moorestown, N.J.-based Bayada Home Health Care[1] has agreed to try out the mHealth platform at another of its facilities in Tampa, Fla. It may also pique the interests of a few more healthcare providers across the country looking to improve care team coordination and reduce health issues tied to communication mishaps.

Health systems have been testing out mobile communications platforms for care team coordination for several years, but few have ventured into the social media landscape. Yet when Ashish Shah and David Coyle looked at platforms for their Chicago-based startup, Prepared Health, they saw sites like Facebook and Instagram as ideal communication tools.

In a recent profile in Crain’s[2], Shah said he took the company’s app, enTouch, to Bayada Home Health Care, where it was launched at one facility in which 40 percent of the patients were returning to the hospital within 30 days of heart surgery. That’s well above the national average of 25 percent, and a sure sign that care team coordination is lacking.

Eric Thul, a division director with Bayada, told Crain’s the private and secure enTouch app enables home health aides, nurses and other care team members to check for patient updates and refresh status reports while they’re on social media. Since they do this anyways during their spare time, this fits snugly into their daily routine – even more so than answering a voice message or e-mail.

“These things don't seem mind-blowing, but when you do it, it's a game-changer,” he said.

Shah and Coyle, both former employees of Medicity, launched Prepared Health last year and have been supporting the five-employee company on their own. The invitation-only app is available to registered caregivers now, but may soon be expanded to family members and marketed commercially.

Another health system experimenting with social media and care team coordination is the University of California, San Francisco[3]. The health system is partnering with Voalte, a Florida-based developer of mobile communications platforms, to launch Voalte Story[4] - basically an electronic whiteboard for clinicians.

The interactive enterprise, social-based communication (ESBC) platform enables care team members to post and link texts and alarms to specific patients. It also allows caregivers to see all messages related to a patient, streamline communication between the care team and enable multiple caregivers to access information around a certain patient, topic or task.

"In an active hospital setting, fast and accurate communications can truly be the difference between life or death, and yet our communications systems remain slow and fragmented," Michael Blum, MD, CDHI, director and chief medical information officer at UCSF Medical Center, said in a press release. "Our goal is to tap into the huge advances in consumer communications to create an efficient and secure shorthand system for sharing information within healthcare teams and between caregivers."

How much information should doctors and medical professionals share on social media?

The ethical and legal pitfalls facing health professionals in an age of instant‚ global communication are akin to a minefield.

The furore around low-carbohydrate high-fat advocate Tim Noakes is a case in point.

He emerged victorious after a long and bruising disciplinary after giving dietary advice to a breastfeeding mother on Twitter.

Academic dismissal‚ employment termination and deregistration from professional boards are some of the sanctions faced by health professionals abroad.

Brenda Kubheka from the School of Public Health‚ Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand says a whole new generation of medical students have emerged with digital footprints and established social media habits “unimaginable to their seniors”.

Writing in the South African Medical Journal‚ she cited a study that found 52% of undergraduate medical students admitted to having “embarrassing photos on Facebook”.

But‚ she warned‚ the same laws and codes of conduct apply in cyberspace as they do in the real world in a paper titled‚ Ethical and legal perspectives on use of social media by health professionals in South Africa.

“Failure to uphold ethical standards on social media exposes patients to embarrassment and psychological harm‚ thus undermining the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence‚” she wrote.

Social media is a valuable tool for health promotion due to its massive reach. Group-based communication using WhatsApp enables medical professionals to communicate about shift work‚ traffic issues and‚ for example‚ share pictures of patients when requesting second opinions from colleagues.

Kubheka’s paper offers some useful pointers on cyberspace etiquette for medical professionals. They include:

– Think carefully before accepting friend requests from patients or sending friend requests to them‚ because of the risk of blurring professional and personal lives.
– Sharing patients’ photographs‚ even for educational purposes‚ might constitute an invasion of privacy.
– Do not take photographs without obtaining informed consent from patients.
– Share generic information online. Avoid responding with direct medical advice to individuals.
– Making negative comments about colleagues and patients on social media can be viewed as bullying and unprofessional.

“Professionals ought to ask themselves before posting on social media whether sharing certain information is legally and morally defensible‚” said the paper.

It recommended that the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) “develop social media guidelines and train medical trainers in this specific area”.

Medical schools were also encouraged to address social media issues.

Millennials are coming of age and, accordingly, they are taking on the lion’s share of buying power in the United States. This matters to healthcare marketers because millennials are consuming healthcare services differently, which will affect your long-term healthcare marketing success. While it’s hard to pin down exactly what the diverse group of millennials is looking for from marketing, it’s well known that they don’t like to be marketed to, they want to be communicated with authentically, and they spend a lot of time on social media.

How do you deal with this in healthcare marketing? It’s simple; market to millennials on social media.

On March 29th, 2017, OhioHealth and Fathom healthcare marketing experts got together to discuss the millennial healthcare habits that matter most to you and what to do about them in our webinar ‘Millennials & Healthcare: Using Generation Marketing to Build Social Media Strategy’.

OhioHealth is a not-for-profit, faith-based health system that has served central Ohio since 1891. The system consists of 12 hospitals, 20 health and surgery centers, home-health providers, medical equipment and health service suppliers throughout a 40-county area.

With roots that go back over 125 years, OhioHealth has still managed to keep its marketing modern and engage each upcoming generation.  Keep reading for OhioHealth’s strategy, execution, and success in targeting millennials with social media.

How OhioHealth Used Social Media to Successfully Target Millennials

A few years ago, OhioHealth realized they were not marketing enough to millennials. To solve this dilemma, they launched a whole new digital strategy. Firstly, they created a content portal that connected the following elements: their mobile app, website, discussion boards, social media, and email newsletter. Through this effort, they built the brand community that millennials much prefer to traditional marketing.

Additionally, OhioHealth focused efforts on nontraditional healthcare channels, such as Instagram and online video, and educated their leadership about the importance of online reputations for health systems along the way. Through social media promotion of staff travels and OhioHealth sponsored events, such as the 2016 Capital City Half Marathon, OhioHealth was able to reach countless millennials.

Along with an overall change to their digital strategy, OhioHealth conducted targeted social campaigns to raise awareness of their services. Below is a specific example of what OhioHealth did to meet the goal of generating awareness of their Sexual Violence Helpline.

OhioHealth Case Study – Generating Awareness of Sexual Violence Hotline Through Social Media

First, the OhioHealth team established audience demographics, including location, gender, and age.  The 18 to 29-year-old average age put this group squarely in the millennial bracket and, with this information, the team did audience research around relevant channel usage. They discovered that their targeted age group used the following channels:

61% use FB everyday37% Tweet every day4% use Instagram73% have used Pandora24% listen to Spotify dailyHalf go on YouTube daily

Additionally, 73% own smartphones and 92% go online daily.

With these statistics in mind, OhioHealth created a millennial-focused digital media plan with a combination of streaming radio ads, video and display ads, and paid social ads, including:

YouTube video adsPandora adsFacebook Video adsFacebook Image adsDisplay ads with demographic targetingPaid search (AdWords)MNI Geofencing

These efforts ultimately resulted in a 26% lift in Brand Awareness, a 64.8% life in Ad Recall as well as 31,000 sessions and 425 conversions overall. In fact, a number of these conversions came from unexpected sources: 76% came from Pandora and Facebook, while 20% came from MNI Geofencing.

Top Takeaways

Mobile-friendly, visual content is essential with this audience, as is creating great content that doesn’t feel like advertising. Beyond this, though, it’s essential for healthcare organizations to meet millennials where they’re at for peak engagement.

Ultimately, changing the way your healthcare organization markets itself will help your message resonate better across all generations, not just millennials. The key is to reach outside of your comfort zone.
