How Do You Find The Time For Social Media?

How Do You Find The Time For Social Media? | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

How do you find the time for social media? This is the question I get asked probably more than any other.

I have four lovely children, a demanding job, a wife with a successful career and more. So how do I find the time to tweet, blog, share, and comment?

The answer is simple: I make the time for social media because I think it’s important.

I believe that business people in general, and marketers especially, have an obligation to do more than just consume content or share other people’s content, but to become a content creator and to contribute to your work and your life.

I think its fair to stay that at the beginning of your social media journey it can be very time consuming getting to grips with the different platforms and building up followers and looking for decent content to share. You also have to develop your style. That said, with the right tools and mindset your time investment lessens substantially - unless you get hooked!
Martin Gysler's comment, April 19, 2013 7:56 AM
Indeed, at the beginning the most things are difficult and need more time. After it's rather the mind set who dictate the invested time in social media, it's right, I agree with you Gemma. But in my sens the invested time is worth it because it create many very interesting contacts across the world.

How Do You Know When You’re Overdosing On Social Networks?

How Do You Know When You’re Overdosing On Social Networks? | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

Social networks are captivating – there’s no doubt. The minds behind building the popular social media platforms of today knew exactly what they were doing and they saw it before any of us ever did. It’s a brilliant idea really – create a medium that allows people from all over the world to connect, share and collaborate like they never have been able to before in the history of the Earth. Incredible!

But an unforeseen (or potentially foreseen, but ignored) consequence is addiction. Social networks have been so good at “helping” us, but now they’re hindering us. From what you might ask? Well, ask your friends, family, parents, even children what they think. And although it is often joked about, it isn’t a joking matter.

ThinkUp 1.0: Reclaim your tweets and Facebook posts

ThinkUp 1.0: Reclaim your tweets and Facebook posts | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

Expert Labs has released version 1.0 of ThinkUp, a program that lets people archive, search, and analyze their activity on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

And if you ask me, this is a big deal.

ThinkUp, the free, open-source brainchild of programmer and Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani, keeps track of what you've done online. It extracts the data from the walled gardens that house more and more of people's digital lives then replants it in your own garden.

The app isn't simple to install, unfortunately. You need some server administration skills so you can host ThinkUp on your own Web server or run it on an instance of Amazon's EC2 cloud-computing service. (More on that point later.)...

LinkedIn Diaries: Answering the Really Tough Questions

LinkedIn Diaries: Answering the Really Tough Questions | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

While LinkedIn is without a doubt the social media tool of choice for business leaders across North America, many have confided in me that there a number of questions about the tool that they struggle with. In this entry of the LinkedIn Diaries, I answer the five most thorny questions that executives face when optimizing their LinkedIn strategies.

1. Who should I accept LinkedIn invitations from?

The decision to accept invitations to your list of connections should be driven by your goals for using LinkedIn. But, if you haven’t defined specific goals, an invitation is worth accepting when one or more of the following is true:..

Why are we so willing to risk our own privacy online?

Why are we so willing to risk our own privacy online? | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it
The notion of privacy both offline and online is currently in contention and is featuring heavily in the spotlight.

The concept of privacy is reaching a very fragile state. With every single status update that we share, we are foregoing a part of our privacy, readily handing over data to pretty much anyone that wants to access it. Yet it is something that we seem so willing to do. Privacy as a concept will only last as long as society functions in a way to protect it and that is rapidly eroding.

While we can access tools or processes that allow us to protect our own privacy, as a society we are increasingly ignoring these in favour of sharing pretty much everything...

Using Social Media to Get Ahead of Search Demand

Using Social Media to Get Ahead of Search Demand | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

Before I even start saying anything about keyword research I want to take my hat off to Richard Baxter because the tools and methodologies he shared at MozCon make me feel silly for even thinking about bringing something to the Keyword Research table. Now with that said, I have a few ideas about using data sources outside of those that the Search Engines provide to get a sense of what needs people are looking to fulfill right now. Consider this the first in a series.

Correlation Between Social Media & Search Volume
The biggest problem with the Search Engine-provided keyword research tools is the lag time in data. The web is inherently a real-time channel and in order to capitalize upon that you need to be able to leverage any advantage you can in order to get ahead of the search demand. Although Google Trends will give you data when there are huge breakouts on keywords around current events there is a three-day delay with Google Insights and AdWords only gives you monthly numbers!...

The Art Of Seductive Landing Pages

The Art Of Seductive Landing Pages | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

People don’t just want to be educated about what you offer. They want to be seduced.

Yes, seduced.

Being seduced is an exhilarating experience.

First, recognize that seduction is not synonymous with deception. Being seduced is fun. Being deceived is not. It’s unfortunate that shady advertisers have conflated the two. But the world’s best brands pursue “honest seduction,” touching us emotionally as a way to begin a genuine, mutually rewarding relationship.

So while I fully recommend incorporating the best principles of content marketing in your conversion optimization — educating, informing, and leading thoughts — I implore you to communicate more than that. Impart the spirit of your organization, your brand, speaking to the heart as well as the mind.

Here are two suggestions to make your landing pages more seductive...

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

I was a high-school Maths teacher for eight years and for all those years, my life evolved in writing lesson plans, producing teaching materials and worksheets, dealing with parents, teaching some well-behaved and some rude students, and pleasing demanding bosses. When an opportunity came for me to finally be a full-time blogger, which allows me to be my own boss and set my own schedule and calendar, it was a dream come true.

Yet, as it turn out, building a website and establishing myself as an authority isn´t all fairy tales.

I was a part-time blogger for two years, juggling my full-time day job, after-school tutorials, and blogging until late midnight every day. My first blogs were built through a free blog platform, on which I learned HTML, SEO techniques, and a little online marketing. I had enough experience and I was quite ready to do blogging full-time before I decided to quit my job...

Curation and Creation Are Both Important

Curation and Creation Are Both Important | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

How many times have you thought, “I wish I would have been a part of the Old Spice creation?” Or a part of creating any campaign gone viral? Perhaps you just wish you were creating daily content that was popular, meaningful and significant in and whatever you do.

Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe dabbling into more curation would be just as satisfying and effective?

The social space and world in general are full of people who want to create. Creating – the creative process – and fresh, new ideas make the marketing and business world go ’round. But what happens when this awesomely created content gets buried? If no one is there to collect it all into one place, it is likely to quickly go missing. That is, unless we acknowledge the power of curation.

Curation is not something for “those who can’t create.” It should not be thought of as a B-level social task. Remember, part of our jobs as chief sharers is to save people time. Curating does this...

38 Critical Books Every Blogger Needs to Read | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

Your blog is a business.

I’m not saying that your blog should make money. If you’re a Copyblogger reader, that’s probably already something you’re focusing on.

I’m saying that your blog (independent of the other parts of your business) itself has all of the components of a business:

-You have an idea … that’s entrepreneurship.
-You write content … that’s the product.
-You build a list of subscribers and do some guest blogging … that’s marketing.
-You have readers … those are customers.
-You run analytics to see what’s working and what isn’t … that’s managerial accounting.

6 Reasons Why You Should NOT Put All Your Eggs In The Facebook Basket

6 Reasons Why You Should NOT Put All Your Eggs In The Facebook Basket | Small Business Marketing | Scoop.it

Many companies and entrepreneurs put all their online efforts into Facebook Pages.

There is no stopping Facebook at this point, no doubt about it. And with that also comes the increasing number of brands and companies engaging in the creation and management of Pages (or “Fan Pages” as they used to be known).

We even hear about companies not having websites anymore to migrate all their efforts to Facebook. Okay, those are extreme cases but you can’t deny that at least once you heard about it.

The problem is we are jumping in the wagon as we did back in the day when we decided that we needed a website because our competitors had one. We ended up building millions of digital brochures that did nothing but get you an “online presence”. What if Facebook Pages are not all that? What if they don’t work as well as we think they do?...
