An interesting read. Nice to see the practical day to day use of social media and how it has integrated our web space into a constant two-way dialogue - has reached Academics! I too, don't think using the word "media" helps social much - because it gives the wrong connotation!

This article helps to give more credence to the growth of SMS social networks, but I think the element that has been missed is that sometimes there is s strategic reason for shorter messages (especially on Twitter) - it allows for followers to respond to the Tweet - by either RT'ing or MT'ing...and for them to add more hashtags if they want to.
