Mark Zuckerberg’s Vision: Facebook and a new Disruptive Social Open Economy: Part

The Social Mission.

“Facebook was built to accomplish a social mission — to make the world more open and connected.”

At first glance Mark Zuckerberg’s own words speak more of his vision than his corporate aims. The above quote has something of the evangelical about it, especially coming from a man who controls around 57 % of the board of his company. At this point Zuckerberg really doesn’t need to convert anyone else to his way of thinking.

In his letter to investors announcing the IPO he stated that “Facebook was not originally created to be a company,” and somehow that still rings true: Facebook is not your typical company, although it now has 3200 employees, 3.7 Billion Dollars of revenue and 1 billion after tax net income from 2011.

For those of us who are pondering the possibilities of the many different platforms available, Facebook and Linkedin are great places to start, especially for businesses. Neil Ferree's curator insight, April 28, 2015 11:44 AM

Action steps:

  • Design a desktop header image that still looks good with the mobile overlay. Think twice about putting text or CTAs in your header image as they might be obscured on mobile.
  • Focus on visual content. Images are prominent in the Twitter app, and since they appear in multiple aspect ratios (rectangle vs. square), a eye-grabbing image with info in the center will look best.

  • Make note of what you retweet. Not only will people see your retweets on your profile, they’ll also see them in lists.

Rewiring the World.

“Facebook’s Open Graph invests in what I refer to as the Egosystem, a network in which each person is at the center of their own universe. Each app now extends the persona of each individual, where they tell their story through updates and actions and tailor engagement based on what they do and say. Facebook is simplifying the sharing process for doing so. The idea is that we strengthen relationships through interests and foster conversations based on our actions and intentions.

As such, Facebook is investing in the quality of our relationships through technology where the social graph, people we know, slowly transforms into an interest graph, people with whom we share common interests.” – Brian Solis in Likes, Genre, Action – Facebook Introduces Clicks to Action.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Vision: Facebook and a new Disruptive Social Open Economy: Part

Mark Zuckerberg is not your average 27-year-old young man – or even your average entrepreneur. This CEO’s story is more than just that of the Harvard dropout who started Facebook in 2004, having never previously had a full-time job. Zuckerberg then moved to Silicon Valley and managed to create the most influential and high profile social media business and one of the world’s top companies in just 8 years.

Since the age of 18, when he famously created TheFacebook.com in his Harvard dorm room with roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Zuckerberg has been disrupting the web and the way we relate with each other as no one had done before.

Mark Zuckerberg is loved and hated because of the way he has expanded the web towards the concept of the social graph whilst opening up the thorny issue of personal data privacy and transparency. But, regardless of where you stand on Zuckerberg the man, his impact and influence are undeniable. The dorm room project has become the web’s greatest directory, with almost 50% of the world’s web users on it (currently totalling 2 billion people). To date more than 91 billion photos have been uploaded to Facebook and half a billion people now use the platform on mobile phones.
