Ahead of Twitter's IPO filing, the key figure anticipated by investors was the company's average revenue per user.
Tim Fernback's insight:

The key metric calculated.  Average revenue per user.  Revenues in the US are VERY different from the rest of the world, and right now the majority of revenue is coming from the US.  This may change as emerging markets grow and ad revenues grow internationally.  Most of Twitter's revenue is from ad revenue and not data (a complete reversal from the previous year when data trumped ad revenue).

Twitter is raising $1B, no comment on valuation yet as I will have to look at the S-1 filing but it must be close to $10B based on the most recent share values of $20.62/share on Sept 5/13 and 473M shares outstanding, but Twitter's revenues are projected to be $500-600M this year and likely with a loss.

The ability to do targeted advertising on Twitter is key to its valuation.  Knowing how is tweeting and how they use the internet will allow Twitter to earn higher EBITDA multiples on from its ad revenues in a valuation model used by investment bankers.
