BYOD: Supporting Students Via Their Own Devices | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
From flipped classrooms to self-directed learning, even for the most traditional higher education institutions, everything is moving increasingly online with a focus towards mobile.

According to recent Pew Research, 83% of Millennials now sleep with their smartphones next to them.

Seth Dixon's insight:

The ubiquity of mobile devices in our lives today and the accelerating pace of digital interconnectivity is both exhilarating and frightening all at once.  Monitoring usage to avoid dangerous habits is going to be increasingly important.

5 Great Teachers On What Makes A Great Teacher | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

When we began our 50 Great Teachers series, we set out to find great teachers and tell their stories. But we'll also be exploring over the coming year questions about what it means for a teacher to be great, and how he or she gets that way.

To get us started, we gathered an expert round table of educators who've also done a lot of thinking about teaching. Combined, these teachers are drawing on over 150 years of classroom experience:

Ken Bain
Troy Cockrum
Eleanor R. Duckworth

The Hardest Part of Teaching

The Hardest Part of Teaching | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

"They never tell you in teacher school, and it's rarely discussed elsewhere. It is never, ever portrayed in movies and tv shows about teaching. Teachers rarely bring it up around non-teachers for fear it will make us look weak or inadequate.  Valerie Strauss in the Washington Post once put together a series of quotes to answer the question "How hard is teaching?" and asked for more in the comments section. My rant didn't entirely fit there, so I'm putting it here, because it is on the list of Top Ten Things They Never Tell You in Teacher School.

The hard part of teaching is coming to grips with this:  There is never enough. There is never enough time. There are never enough resources. There is never enough you."

Why Tough Teachers Get Good Results

Why Tough Teachers Get Good Results | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
Joanne Lipman writes that today's educators are too soft. It is time to go back to the discipline of the past.
Seth Dixon's insight:

This is a good read with some nice food for thought.  I'm a bit of a softie, and I do think that a more firm hand would be educationally beneficial for my students in the long run, even if they might not appreciate it in the short term.  This article outlines 8 old-fashioned principles that the author is recommending that we embrace once again.

  1. A little pain is good for you.
  2. Drill, baby, drill.
  3. Failure is an option.
  4. Strict is better than nice.
  5. Creativity can be learned.
  6. Grit trumps talent.
  7. Praise makes you weak...
  8. ...while stress makes you strong.

Why Poor Schools Can’t Win at Standardized Testing

Why Poor Schools Can’t Win at Standardized Testing | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
The companies that create the most important state and national exams also publish textbooks that contain many of the answers. Unfortunately, low-income school districts can’t afford to buy them.

Stop giving standardized tests that are inextricably tied to specific sets of books. At the very least, stop using test scores to evaluate teacher performance without providing the items each teacher needs to do his or her job. Most of all, avoid basing an entire education system on materials so costly that big, urban districts can’t afford to buy them.

I'm not a It's not just because laptops are distracting — but because taking notes by hand forces you to actively listen.

Seth Dixon's insight:

I'm not a technological Luddite, but more tech isn't always the right answer.  Actively taking notes is one of the most underrated skill now, especially since many think, 'oh, the notes are online.'  It's the mental connections that you make while taking notes that truly matters.  So TAKE GOOD NOTES...even if you aren't going to 'need them' in the future.
