Poor Parents Grumble As Rich Chicago School Forces Kids To Buy iPads

Poor Parents Grumble As Rich Chicago School Forces Kids To Buy iPads | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

"New Trier High School is embracing a future with more e-books and iPads -- and fewer old-fashioned text books. But not all parents in the district are thrilled with having to pony up extra money for the gadgets.

"We're in a wealthy district, but you can't assume that everyone's wealthy," said Mary Rita Kropp, a New Trier parent who addressed the school board on the topic at a meeting this week."

I'm all for using technology with education, but this article highlights the digital divide and some issues in implemental technological updates given diverse socioeconomic situations.

Sorry, College Grads, I Probably Won't Hire You | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
In The Wall Street Journal, Kirk McDonald writes that college graduates without basic computer programming skills are shortchanging their career choices.

In part, it's not your fault. If you grew up and went to school in the United States, you were educated in a system that has eight times as many high-school football teams as high schools that teach advanced placement computer-science classes.  Read more...

How NOT to do Social Media

How NOT to do Social Media | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
The two owners of Amy's Baking Company Bakery Boutique & Bistro took over the restaurant's Facebook page last night to fight unruly commenters, and man, was it embarrassing.
Seth Dixon's insight:

This is a train wreck in every sense of the phrase -- it is an unmitigated disaster but also mesmerizing.  Fighting online criticism with venom is never a good idea.

A Key to School Improvement: Empowering Students Beyond the Classroom

A Key to School Improvement: Empowering Students Beyond the Classroom | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

"A lot of emphasis has been placed on student empowerment in the classroom, but less attention has focused on student empowerment in the school as a whole. One way to empower students in the school is through the development of a student government with the power to impact school policies. Many student government groups function as purely social groups with activities oriented toward school spirit. While fostering a collective school identity is important in the development of a school community, such groups typically are devoid of any real decision-making power."

Seth Dixon's insight:

I've greatly enjoyed working with Allison Hunt for the last 8 years and as always, she has a great perspective on the helping students become empowered.

How to Create YouTube Photo Slideshows

How to Create YouTube Photo Slideshows | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

"Animoto is an excellent tool for creating audio slideshows. But there are some limitations to it that some teachers don't like. Most notable of those limitations is the time limit (30 seconds unless you get an Animoto for Education account), lack of space for text, and that students have to remember a username and password to use it. The YouTube slideshow tool provides a tool for creating audio slideshows without those three limitations of Animoto."

Via Beth Dichter
Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 2, 9:19 PM

If you are looking for an alternative to Animoto to use with students to create photo slideshows check out YouTubePhoto Slideshows. YouTube allows you to create videos up to 15 minutes in length and you may specify how long a slide is shown. There is also an annotation tool to add text. For those folks whom use Google Apps for Eduation students already have a user name and log-in. Richard Byrne provides directions (with screen shots) to walk you through the process.

Heather Ramsey's curator insight, April 12, 12:52 PM

This page shows how to use YouTube for slideshows so that they are longer and more accessible to students that other sites like Animoto. I had no idea that YouTube had this capability. In my district, YouTube is blocked on campus computers (I'm sure many others can sympathize) so I would need to work around that if I had students using this in a lesson. Recently I began to use SlideRocket to create video lessons so that I can incorporate audio narration and the link is not blocked by the district's web filter. SlideRocket could be used for a slideshow as well, but it takes a lot more customizing than this YouTube method. This blog has a ton of other useful information too. Kudos to the writer!

Digital vs. Paper

Seth Dixon's insight:

So many of the educational discussions these days are touting the newest technologies (many of which I embrace).  Too many though, I fear, are willing to abandon tried and true "old school" pedagogical strategies in an attempt to incorporate the latest and greatest.  Just because it's new doesn't inherently make it better.  This video is a comical reminder that some old technologies and old strategies are worth keeping.  Let's keep some paper in the educational system.

Tony Hall's curator insight, April 3, 10:29 PM

You've more than likely seen this already, but I think it is worth sharing. I love technology. I love using it in the classroom. But it is just a tool - a crap teacher with a laptop is still a crap teacher. I firmly believe that there is room for the traditional as well as the innovative. Enjoy:)

Tim Pixley's curator insight, March 13, 7:57 AM

I agree!  Once you find the right curators and develop relationships with them, they turn into mentors. Some of them are very successful, industry experts, and deeply respected.  Some material gets put out months before they're covered in a college class.  The trick is to be discerning as to what is merely a fad versus a long-term trend. ;)

Road tax: abolished 1937. Use car tax.
Seth Dixon's insight:

I was outraged when I read this tweet, and not surprisingly, so did many others.  This account is now closed and the police are thankfully beginning an investigation (and her employer is actively distancing themselves from her) .  Social media makes some people far too brazen with their misdeeds, but if those are not merely gaffes but criminal, you'll regret treating social media as if it were simply a conversation with your friends.  Oh, and what about the cyclist?  Glad you asked.  #TwitterJustice.

The key to success in school? Grit

"Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school.  She quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success."

Seth Dixon's insight:

Yes, intelligence and talent matter in educational performance, but we can't undersell the importance of hard work and persistence in academic success.  With so many educational overhauls, many of these plans fail to address the underlying problem--we need more grit.  The speaker defines grit as 'passion and perserverance for very long-term goals.' This is a great talk and I love the framework it takes for approaching education.

Kathy Gordon's curator insight, May 19, 11:23 PM

Definitely agree!  Certainly see this in math.  Don't have to be a math genius to succeed, you just have to stick with it!

The End of the Lecture?

.@Wikipedia founder @jimmy_wales says boring university lectures "are doomed". Do you agree? http://bbc.in/16pdeex

Seth Dixon's insight:

The traditional lecture has been the foundation of my college courses for years.  I've integrated more online components into my classes the past few years and am masquerading as a digital professor, but I'm still reluctant to a ditch the lecture.  When I'm honest about it, the lecture is a security blanket for me; it's familiar, I know how to do it, and it is has no risk associated with it.  I feel that anything else is stepping out into the pedagogical unknown for me, but I think that the students deserve professors willing to cut ties with outdated learning models to give them the best learning opportunities available.  It's time to take the plunge.

World leaders in the classroom?

World leaders in the classroom? | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
Seth Dixon's insight:

Years ago the idea of inviting people from around the world into your classroom seemed far-fetched and unrealistic.  Here we see the Former Prime Minister of Australia (and still a foreign policy expert on East Asia) Kevin Rudd skyping with the Plaid Avenger's World Regions geography class at Virginia Tech (you can start 14 minutes into the feed).  This is a great to discuss China, North Korea and Australia, but is a perfect example of social media and educational technologies to enhance the classroom experience and improve the learning.

"Once upon a time, the role of the teacher in the classroom conjured up images and ideas of blackboards, rulers, chalk, and pencils. But now, technology is becoming more and more integrated into modern school systems—not just as an added bonus, but as a necessity to how students learn and how teachers teach."
