Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post

Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post | Social Media: Changing Our World of Education | Scoop.it

This term I have been working with upper Key Stage 2 pupils to develop interactive adventure style games in Book Creator. One of the features of the app is it allows you to link objects such as images and text to other pages within the book. For images, tap on the image to select it, then tap on the Info icon and use the hyperlink box to type in the page number. For text, highlight the text withIn the text box and you will see a hyperlink option.

This has enabled us to create games where choices, questions and decisions are asked of the user/player throughout. We have then used this as a stimulus for writing, not only creatively but also instruction and advertising. Above are a few screen shots of an example book I made but I didn't want to show the pupils too much as I wanted them to come up with their own ideas.

Curate Book Passages and Quotes with Findings

Curate Book Passages and Quotes with Findings | Social Media: Changing Our World of Education | Scoop.it

From the article intro: "The act of highlighting a noteworthy passage in an ebook is being socialized by Findings, an online destination where readers can collect, share, discuss and discover such highlights from ebooks and web texts.

...

The Findings experience is centered around shared passages and user libraries.

Libraries are like digital bookshelves and consist of all the texts — with highlights and quotes automatically organized by book, source or author — the user has clipped from.

Readers can use the Findings bookmarklet to clip snippets of text from ebooks and websites.

They can also sync Findings with their Amazon Kindle Highlights for an instantaneous way to share and starting discussing their collection of saved passages.

“With Findings, we are trying to do something that is dedicated explicitly to the task of curating quotations,” Findings co-creator Steven Johnson says.

“That narrowness of focus has allowed us to concentrate on a couple of key features that make Findings particularly useful.”

Vanessa Camilleri's curator insight, August 21, 2014 2:22 PM

People always seem to be complaining about this... our children are distracted... who wants to read when they can play games, but in effect children tend to copy their parents. By instilling a passion for reading from a young age we can try to balance out the claim that the young children do not like books or reading. One story a day... just like the apple, helps develop the creativity in children. It doesn't hurt by having the children making up their own stories and writing them together with their parents!

Here's why the Internet works, "... because open standards allow every network to connect to every other network.  (So far...)   This is what makes it possible for anyone to create content, offer services, and sell products without requiring permission from a central authority.

It levels the playing field for everyone and it’s the reason why we have a rich diversity of applications and services that many of us enjoy today.
