The Shorty awards including a category to nominate your favorite billionare, the "1% of the 1%." I wonder if they take it seriously and what do they get for being nominated on the web. Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Mark Cuban in the top 3 at the moment. - Nakeva

Where’s the ROI in Social Media? Enquiring Minds Want to Know.

One of the most prevalent excuses I hear from people not engaged in social media is the lack of provable ROI. Traditional marketers just can’t seem to get their collective heads around how social media can be monotized.

...

"If I had to pick a reason that many social media strategies fail I’d pick this. You’ll fail if you can’t give your customers something they need. You’ll fail if you can’t engage your employees. You’ll fail if your entire company is not onboard with your social media campaign and you’ll fail if you’re not 100% committed to forgetting the traditional role of ROI in your company’s balance sheet.

That said, social media has it’s own ROI. Great news huh? And oddly enough, that ROI often ends up giving those bean-counters exactly what they wanted in the first place."

Will Arrington of TechCrunch Get The Huffington Punch?

Big moves being made these days at big companies. Now Micheal Arrington at TechCrunch may be getting the boot as editor. Needless to say after the AOL takeover almost a year ago, executives do change their minds and teams are not excited about it. A candid post by MG Seigler opens your mind.

Quote:

"This is a post I never thought I'd have to write. Unfortunately, I do. And the worst part about it is that it should be Michael Arrington writing this post, not me.

But he can't.

TechCrunch is on the precipice."

What would you do in Michael Arrington's position if it was clear you were going to be replaced?

Obama Loses 36,000+ Twitter Followers in #Compromise Campaign [STATS]

It didn't seem all the tweets came from POTUS directly. I think it was a thoughtless move for those regularly using Twitter and barely seeing POTUS tweets. Losing 36K speaks volumes. Not good for the upcoming campaign and hope a better approach is taken with strategy. - [Nakeva]

----
President Obama created a barrage of activity on Twitter on Friday afternoon when he began urging his more than 9 million followers to tweet at their Republican Congressmen to “ask them to support a bipartisan solution to the deficit crisis.”

As we noted in our earlier coverage, however, some users felt the state-by-state tweets were creating way too much noise — the President has lost nearly 37,000 followers so far today...

This year's best social media campaigns to date - iMediaConnection.com

The Mattel and Greenpeace story using Ken, the doll, as a plot to bring change: priceless! No idea how I missed that one. True Blood using social media via Facebook and video for fans: I haven't kept up with the show but could be swayed to get involved. The recently announced partnership of American Express and Foursquare gives a credit company first crack at making intuitive marketing deals with shoppers that like to check in and share with the world. Forward thinking social media campaigns, that's social media C4!

The Social Addiction - It's More Serious Than We Think | Social Media Today

A recent study of college students around the world revealed some very troubling information regarding social media, media in general and the word "addiction." My guess is many of these findings can be applied to ALL of us. - Steve Olenski

Rapportive just turned Gmail into a really useful Twitter client

Gmail plugin Rapportive is already one of the most useful tools for anyone wanting to get more out of their email, showing you information from the social networking profiles of people ...

While Rapportive previously let you see the tweets of people who emailed you, it’s now a lot more useful. For a start, you can now reply to people via Twitter, and retweet them too, right from Gmail.

Should you nuke your blogs like Steve Rubel did?

Steve Rubel, a VP of digital strategy at Edelman, recently moved his blog to Tumblr and deleted all of his old posts. He says Google is paying more attention to social signals now, and so a social platform is more important than just having a blog.
But is he right?

Infographic: Facebook and Relationships #SocialMedia

As Facebook nears 700 million users we take a look at how this social network affects our relationships. All Facebook and Online Dating University created this infographic which shows the more personal side of our sharing on Facebook.

Amongst the stats displayed here, this infographic shows that only three out of every five users show their relationship statuses at all, and relationship listings appear more frequently among Facebook users in the U.S., South Africa, Iceland, the U.K. and Canada.

Read the entire post and grab the free video training...But what we’re talking about here is developing a means to let people know about what you’re doing in business that really encourages them to “stay on the business track” with you even tho it’s your profile and it’s supposed to be for “friends.” - Eric Walker

Handle This: Google+ Finally Allows Pseudonyms [Good or bad?]

The Google+ Common Name policy will never be the same. Google now allows both nicknames and full-fledged pseudonyms on Google+.

My Thoughts:

This was the hot argument when Google+ started blowing accounts from SecondLife users and others that didn't use their birth certificate names. Is this going to add to the list of spammers already out there or add to the trust factor that people can be their "online persona" that others already relate to? I think its a start to keeping privacy and individuality. Spammers and reckless users will be around no matter what you ask them to prove on identity. - Nakeva

Social Media Sites: Employers Should Block Them - BusinessWeek

"No matter how much money is poured into IT security infrastructure, businesses that allow social media are targeted because every employee is viewed as a new avenue for hackers to exploit. Everyone from CEO to secretary is susceptible to hackers via social networks because they all come with different levels of security experience. It only takes one person to fall for a phishing attack to cause companywide cybersecurity exposure."

Montgomery County and ParkNOW! to Launch World-First Pay by Cell Service Based on QR Codes and Smartphone Apps

#QRcode parking meters: Right up the road from me, wow! Thanks for info @AniseSmith

----

MobileNOW!, a leading provider of Pay by Cell parking services under the service name ParkNOW! , launched the first ever commercial parking payment service using smart phones and QR code scanning in Montgomery County on July 27, 2011 with an initial pilot in Garage 40 in downtown Bethesda.

ParkNOW! permits drivers to initiate and pay for a parking session with a smartphone by scanning a QR code on a parking meter. The code identifies the space number which makes it not only more convenient to park but eliminates the risk of human error with manual entry. The QR code can be scanned using the ParkNOW! app, available for free at iTunes, Android Market, and soon, the Blackberry App World. The solution is patented

Curation tools are almost a dime a dozen! What's your favorite? [Nakeva]

From MyTweetMag:

Currently we are facing a massive growth of curation tools, that are getting better and better. While my personal favourites are still the pioneer of social aggregation tweetedtimes (I think quite everything started with it) and the curation tool scoop.it, there are a lot of tools in stealth-mode which look promising: I just read the fastcompany-article about percolate, a project that seems to follow the concept of scoop.it, but is based on twitter.

And also today I stumbled upon the curation tool ingenic, that is on stealth-mode either. And don’t forget how many tools we have seen so far: pearltrees, paperli, curated.by, storify, storiful, mytweetmag (of course;-) and so on and so on...

Forget FarmVille, Now You Can Sell Weed on Facebook

Wow, social gaming on Facebook selling weed? Does it monitor appropriate age considering the number of kids under 18 using the site? Will die-hard adult fans of the show "Weeds" actually make time to play? Just question after question on this one. [Nakeva's thoughts]

Via Mashable:
Now you can add some spice to your social gaming garden with "Weeds Social Club," a new Facebook game based on Showtime show Weeds.
