Mike Allton's curator insight, June 25, 2013 12:09 PM

Ever wanted to create your own Google+ Community?

There are many, many Google+ Communities available to join, on all kinds of topics and interests, but have you thought about making one yourself?

For personal users, creating communities can be a fun and exciting way to discuss specific topics that you're excited about, and meet new people that share your interests, like how +Jesse Wojdylo created a community just for the TV show Under the Dome.

For businesses, creating and fostering your own community is a tremendous opportunity to connect and engage your followers and potential customers in an environment that you can control and shepherd, like how +Stephan Hovnanian did when he created the Google+ for Small Business community.

Find out exactly how to go about setting up a new Google+ Community, as well as how to promote it. I also suggest six kinds of communities businesses can create and six uses for those communities.

If you were to create a community today, what would it be about?

Thanks for reading! Please comment, +1 and share!

6 Brands That Are Mastering Vine

6 Brands That Are Mastering Vine | Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

Vine has seen impressive growth since its January launch.

The app was released for Android users earlier this month, and has since surpassed Instagram in both downloads and social shares.

With more than 13 million users, and counting, it’s now fair to say that Vine is here to stay.

It is also clear that Vine means business.

We saw brands jump on the Vine-wagon fast and fearless. However, a few early adopters have since become social dropouts.

Take Oreo, for example. After their Superbowl social stunt, there was a lot of positive buzz surrounding the brand. They started off strong on Vine (and gained some “brownie points” when they showed me how to make Oreo sprinkles), but soon lost their way. After two A+ Vine posts, they went on to post 10 videos over the span of just one day, then dropped off completely over the past month.

Back to basics: consistency is key. Tisk tisk, you delicious cookies you.

I would add:

#13 GAMIFY.

#14 Guest Post (especialy with Google Authorship coming).

#15 Contestify (create cool contests).

#16 Work on blogs navigaiton and keyword silos.

#17 Add "Poeple who Read Also Like...".

#18 Add email subscription and regular persona based emails.

That last tip needs some explanation. Blogs have a hard tie gaining substantial PageRank because they tend to be one and done (people come read the post you just pitched on social media and leave). Fix one and done with a "People who like, also like..." Amazon-like feature sharing relevant content to the post on the page.

The other SEO issue with blogs is calendars make for bad keyword silos. Organize your blog into a series of 2 to 6 keyword "silos" such as "Internet marketing" and develop landing pages to summarize the content. This landing page is where you want rank to go as it is the top of the silo.

Read my Advanced SEO: Bleeding, Bottling and Siloing for more tips on how to organize a keyword silo:
http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/06/seo-advanced-lessons-in-bleeding.html

Finally stop treating your blog like a blog and more like a website by adding email subscription forms and developing persona based email marketing. Best guide to how to do this is Managing Content Marketing (book) by Rose and Pulizzi.

SO...there are all kinds of ways to double or triple your blog's read

Not sure I agree with Tim. Social is social. The fact that Pharma is all wound up on itself is more a reflection of pharma than the way the web works. Google makes no distinction betrween pharma content and any other type. Pharma is the one who binds itself up in knots, but universal content and social marketing axioms still apply.
Tim Mustill's comment, July 30, 2013 8:48 AM
I agree the axioms apply Martin but sadly, due to the self -inflicted knots you refer to and regulation there are some aspects of B2C that are just not practical for prescription medicines. Thankfully the barriers are slowly coming down with more big pharma embracing at least some elements of social media.

How Social Media is Changing Mentorship

How Social Media is Changing Mentorship | Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

In our professional lives, mentors make a difference. Whether you’re looking for that promotion or need help starting your own business, mentorship can often be the key ingredient to success.

But don’t just take my word for it — statistics also prove the benefit of having a great mentor. Professionals who have mentors make between $5,610 and $22,450 more annually than those on their own. And one of the places mentors make the biggest difference is when it comes to entrepreneurship.

Most entrepreneurs can tell the story of a mentor who offered help at the exact right moment. The wisdom from these smart, altruistic helpers who’ve been there before can be the difference between your venture's success or failure.

The Missing Tip
These are great tips I agree with, but they are missing one BIG TIP - Gamify. Social media lends itself to gamification beautifully. When you are playing a game you look forward to notices on progress and new happenings.

When playing a game you watch the leaderboard like a golf pro leading on Sunday. The big missing tips among these excellent tips is to GAMIFY. Gamify doesn't have to be complicated.

LinkedIn gamified when they let us know our profiles are only 90% done. That simple statement made all the Type As on LI want to attain 100% profiles. 100% of WHAT exactly (lol).

See what you can gamify and make it easy to play.
