The microblogging giant has come a long way since co-founder Jack Dorsey's first tweet. Here are some Twitter facts and figures worth checking out.

Twitter went public in November 2013. The much ballyhooed IPO was a big hit as TWTR opened at $26.00 and closed at $44.90 in its first day of trading. Today Twitter trades at $44.60 despite a net loss of $34 million in its most recent quarterly report.

While Twitter has become an incredible brand, it must find a way to show profitability in the future. We don’t want the little blue bird to fly away....

In fact, 53% of retail marketers position mobile as their number one strategic priority, according to a Shop.org report.

And let’s not forget YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world (after Google, of course). The ability of videos to increase user engagement is unsurpassed.

According to YouTube’s statistics page, they get over 800 million unique visitors each month, users view more than 4 billion hours of video each month and upload 72 hours of video every minute. That’s a lot of potential for your video....

How many marketers can pin down the impact of social media using hard numbers?

The following infographic, based largely on results from the Demand Gen Report 2013 B2B Content Preferences Survey and 2012 B2B Buyer Survey shows data to help answer that very important question.

Promoting content over social networks is now a vital part of getting a message in front of potential buyers, establishing thought leadership and making the most of content investments. That means understanding which social media channels are most appropriate for different campaigns, and it definitely means understanding how to optimize different types of content for your social campaigns.

You know... I REALLY have a hard time feeling friendly toward Google.  Or YouTube, for that matter.  They're both arrogant as the day is long.  I mean, where else would any sane person do business with somebody where you couldn't even talk directly to a manger...let alone the 'owner'.

They get all pissy and and toss people off of their platforms with virtually zero recourse at all while at the same time giving the government any and all information they want while ALSO taking our information and using it either (a) for their own purposes and/or (b) against us.

That's good service?

I recall hearing that Google+ is changing into another animal now that the original founder has departed.  That's the way these guys do it.  They're digital 'pushers'.... get you hooked and then raise the price.

Why Startups Should Use Pinterest

Why Startups Should Use Pinterest | Social Media | Scoop.it

Pinterest & Startups
This image of Batgirl staring out of a doorway is one of Scenttrail's most popular pins (http://www.pinterest.com/scenttrail/ ). Pinterest is important for startups because:

* Marketing is becoming VISUAL & Pinterest excels at visual marketing.

* Pinterest is asynchronous to other social nets.
* Pinterest is EASY and doesn't require much time.
* Pinterest creates community faster than other social nets.

That last bullet should have a caveat. Pintererst builds community FAST once you figure out the secret handshake. I was frustrated with how long it was taking to develop a following.

I would share content on Pinterest and I could never understand what seemed to matter, so I shared LOTS more content (one key to success). I also Repinned from others and commented on pins.

All of those tactics helped, but the real dam breaker was creating the King and Queen of Pinterest boards:

http://www.pinterest.com/scenttrail/queen-of-pinterest/

http://www.pinterest.com/scenttrail/king-of-pinterest/

The real winner is the Queen of Pinterest with over 400 pinners now and a great daily rhythm. Community boards do get spammed so I developed some simple guidelines, pinned those guidelines (and do so again and again when the board starts to get spammy).

The victory with King and Queen of Pinterest shares an important secret. Pinterest is a tad solipsistic. People who love to pin really LOVE to pin. There are cult-like moments (lol). So one way to connect is to have a board that shares obsession with Pinterest.

Your startup may not be obsessed with Pinterest, but bet you need to develop a following. When I started the King and Queen of Pinterest boards I had 114 followers. Now, about six months later, Scenttrail has more than 5,000 followers.

Cool thing about community boards is people begin to tell their friends. I invited about half the people pinning on Queen of Pinterest. Interesting I invited 90% of the men (lol). Women understand the core of social media better. They are more naturally social about topics that people love to pin about such as culture, art, celebrity, travel, weight loss, etc...

If you are a startup you should be using Pinterest if only because it builds community, once you figure out a secret or two, faster than any other social net. The other reason Pinterest is important for startups is its focus on asynchronous visual marketing. Learn "asynchronous marketing" even a little and your startup will rock.

Social Media Security Tips [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social Media Security Tips [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media | Scoop.it

In the past 5 years social media growth has exploded around the globe and, as platforms such as Twitter and Facebook expand and begin to increasingly mirror and reflect “real life”, they take on many of the problems of the offline world, too.

For example: security. With millions of social media views, updates and registrations taking place literally each and every minute, the potential for identify thieves, hackers and good, old-fashioned burglars to exploit your personal information has never been greater.

Which means it’s solely your responsibility to ensure you’re protecting yourself when using these channels...

Facebook's Paper vs. Flipboard: Comparing Mobile News Curation Apps

Facebook's Paper vs. Flipboard: Comparing Mobile News Curation Apps | Social Media | Scoop.it

Excerpt from article by Mashable:
"How each story is told is as important as the story itself," begins the promo video for Facebook's new much-hyped Paper app.
The app mixes curated news feeds with your Facebook timeline to create a platform that integrates news discovery and sharing into your timeline.

With its tiled layout and gesture-based user interface, it feels very similar to Flipboard's suite of apps. We put both apps side by side to see how the two stack up. Here's how they compare:

Design: Tiles And Gestures

Both use a tiled layout that displays news in a grid. But while Flipboard's design puts content first, Paper puts Facebook first, emphasizing interacting with your Facebook friends and timeline whenever possible.
Both apps rely heavily on gestures for navigation.

News: Curation vs. Aggregation

When it comes to finding and reading news, the two apps take very different approaches. Simply put, Flipboard is an aggregator while Paper is a curator.
Flipboard, with its customized RSS, topic-based feeds and themed magazines, places importance on personalization first, discovery second.
Paper puts discovery first, telling users what stories they should pay attention to, while emphasizing interacting with friends on Facebook.
Users can subscribe to the app's topic-based news sections, create customized "magazines" based around their interests, or use the app like an RSS feed to subscribe to specific sources.

Getting Social

Sharing and social media integration is at the heart of any news discovery app. Unsurprisingly, social media integration with Flipboard is much more subtle, while Paper puts Facebook front and center.
Facebook may be venturing into the news curation business with Paper, and it may be one of the first of many standalone apps from the social media giant, but the company is still very much emphasizing Facebook as the vehicle for news curation and discovery.

Wrapping It Up

Flipboard is great for collecting all the news you want to read from the sources you like. And if you rely on Flipboard as an aggregator, Paper won't be a replacement. Paper is more of a Facebook app than a "news" app, and it's best suited for those looking to share and discover content with friends.

Flipboard is available for web, iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry, Kindle Fire and Nook. Paper is currently iPhone only..."
