Social Media Quests for Its Next Holy Grail: a ‘Video Instagram.’ But What Might It Mean for Filmmakers? by Dave Kendricken

Social Media Quests for Its Next Holy Grail: a ‘Video Instagram.’ But What Might It Mean for Filmmakers? by Dave Kendricken | Hispanic + Latino & social media marketing | Scoop.it

Posted by Dave Kendricken on November 23, 2012

"Instagram has proven to be a social media force to be reckoned with, and none of the major players already entrenched (or looking to break into) that world are treating it lightly. In fact, several are attempting to reinterpret its model in some fashion or another for a more video-based type of platform. There are already a few startups offering Instagram-type creation and integrated sharing, though it’s unclear what staying power or growth any of them will have in the long run. If one does start growing roots, an ‘Instagram for video’ could become another prime facet of the increasingly cross-pollinated social media ecosystem. But what, if anything, does this all mean for we who deal in pretty moving pictures as our profession?"

The emergence of video-agram type apps such as Lightt and Cinemagram make content sharing more diversified and convenient. Users can record on the spot through the app and upload on social media instantly. People are always craving for novelty, and different varieties of video-agram apps enables them to explore the functions, which will result in the rise of potential Instagram users.

Brittany Ortiz's curator insight, October 21, 2014 6:48 PM

Very interesting to see how both major countries like Mexico Puerto Rico differ throughout the United States. I'm actually not surprised of the static itself since it would make sense where they would go once in the United States. As Mexico being the closest to the United States its obvious how they would just go to California then scatter through the rest of the United States. As for Puerto Rican's I really didn't know where the majority of them would be in the United States. But very cool to see!

Tori Denney's curator insight, May 27, 2015 12:50 PM

Density, distribution, and scale - Density of a country or place, and distribution of where these clusters occur, has to do with migration, cities, and available work. For Mexican's in the United States, distribution is mostly along the border, coasts, or low paid work opportunities.

Why video is "liquid" content in a solid social media world - Schaefer Marketing Solutions

Why video is "liquid" content in a solid social media world - Schaefer Marketing Solutions | Hispanic + Latino & social media marketing | Scoop.it

For video to be truly social we need to think about the technology in a new way.

...Video is exploding on the web today. Wider bandwidths, faster processors and increased storage capacity have opened the door for video to enter into the social web. So it becomes logical to ask, as Will Overstreet does in a recent post, “how do we make video more social?’

But if we are to ever achieve a truly social web video practice, technology designers will have to deal with the deeper contradiction in meanings between “social web” and “video.”

In his post, Will points out that video interactivity falls way behind in comparison to standard social media practices. He asks how we can make video live up to the same expectations and thus make the user experience more seamless. These are valid questions. I want to crack open the problem by using an analogy: video is “liquid”  and social media is “solid.”.…

5 Ways to Use Video to Improve Your Social Media Marketing | Social Media Examiner | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | Hispanic + Latino & social media marketing | Scoop.it

Digest...

In this post, I’m going to show you how to incorporate video from 5 platforms into your social media strategy.

#1: Vine Video

For those who aren’t into complex video production, Vine lets you create simple, six-second looping videos to share on Twitter and Facebook.

#2: Instagram Video

Instagram recently launched their own 15-second, non-looping video capability.

#3: Facebook Video

Facebook allows verified users to create or upload up to 20 minutes of HD video. According to a study done by Dan Zarrella on how to get likes and shares on Facebook, video added directly to Facebook outperforms other video linked from networks such as YouTube in likes, comments and shares.

#4: Google+ Hangouts

If you’re looking to incorporate live video into your social media strategy, then Google+ Hangouts are your best bet.

#5: YouTube

Last but not least is YouTube video. If you have videos on YouTube, you can incorporate them into every part of your social media strategy. On most social networks—Facebook, Google+ and Twitter—you can share a link to any video on YouTube and people can watch your videos directly on those networks.

Play around with Vine, and get some results. Then start to dabble with Google+, SlideShare, and YouTube. Nothing intricate: web cam it or use your smartphone. Dabble, measure, evaluate.

B2B companies should embrace online video to support a their overall content marketing plan. Follow this advice for simple video content, even on a budget.

Basic/ Summarized...

1. Keep it short

2. Break up longer posts into multi-part series

3. Use inserts

Cutting away from the main action (such as a speech or presentation) to show what the speaker is referring to is called adding an “insert” (because you’re “inserting” content into your scene).

4. Use title cards

5. Create uniformity

6. Share your contact information

7. Check audio issues

8. Edit out the mistakes

On the surface, they seem quite logical, but probably easy to overlook. Worthwhile to bookmark and pass along.

Alexander Tate's curator insight, October 27, 2014 6:49 PM

I think these tips were very good for todays social media community. Simplicity, uniformity, and keeping it short are the things that really generalize the way most social media is these days today. I think it is also beneficial for anyone making a website, blog, or social media profile to follow these guidelines in order to not appear as spam or a fake profile in order to preserve the integrity of posts.

At first I thought Jamelle Bouie was off base -- conflating ethnicity with race, but he has a point. Is 'White' a culture or a race?
This is the first I've heard of the theory of Hispanic becoming White.
Steven Riley (of Mixed Race Studies) has mentioned to me that it seems 'Asian' may merge into the White category.
Some say that many Asian Americans out 'white' the Whites. So then, is White more of a culture? I would say a culture because many white's don't even think of themselves as a race - just human - raceless. We all certainly have our cultures but we don't think about race so much unless forced to when filling out the census or school applications, or in academics.

WOW! I think that this is amazing! It's the combination of popular culture and folk culture. These artists are tying together the popular culture of street art to the folk culture of mexico, with skulls, day of the dead and other hispanic heritage. I love how unique this is, showing off the folk culture, but tying in the popular culture,. I think that it is a true gift to be able to take something so personal and unique, like mexican culture, and bring it to life in such a way that everyone can see and enjoy it.
