Litter is threatening the environment and the problem will only get worse unless we do something.  Getting some volunteers to help with this is a great way to help with this type of cleanup.

SnackWebsites Mobile Website Builder is a free to use online web service that lets users create mobile websites.
Today nearly every learner has a smartphone. And learners make full use of their smartphones by using the Internet on them.

This makes it very easy for learning providers, or individual practitioners, to quickly show their learners, their online files that are mobile-compatible.
This can be a great advantage for tutorials, distance learning etc.

Mobile sharing is also beneficial for learners that have portfolios online.
Creating online portfolios of work will not do them any good if the web service they use is not mobile-friendly.
When users start creating a website, they can select which category it falls in; covered categories include...
- personal,
- portfolio,
- community,
- blog,
- product,
- band,
- event,
...and lots more.
Users can also select a template from the various visually appealing options.
The site even gives users numerous extension options to customize the overall URL of the resulting website.
A possible addition to employability courses and/or for community courses e.g. websites for self-employed, community groups, sports clubs, the list goes on.

Cleaning for cash: Yellowknife groups earn extra money by picking up garbage

Cleaning for cash: Yellowknife groups earn extra money by picking up garbage | Social Media | Scoop.it

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Thirty groups have volunteered to clean up the winter's litter, recently unveiled by the melting of the snow.

The city is giving out $970 to each group for their efforts in cleaning Yellowknife up, but Mayor Gord Van Tighem said the cleanup is about more than a way for organizations to make some cash.

"The cleaner it is, the more pride in the community and the more welcoming to tourists. A lot of groups are young people and they are earning an investment in their own interest," said Mayor Gord Van Tighem.

The groups had one week – May 22 to May 29 – to get their specific areas clean of litter, glass and lumber. Usually the cleanup starts a week earlier but due to one last spell of winter in May, the cleanup was slightly behind schedule.

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation | Social Media | Scoop.it

This is an informative article by Jeremy Floyd about content curation and useful for novices. Here is an excerpt from it:

"In the past, we had a few channels of information and each channel had a few gatekeepers that sorted, prioritized and reported the information to the public.

Today, information-consumers have an endless supply of channels. News, entertainment, gossip and professional development all drain into the same information stream that flows rich throughout the connected world. The gatekeepers have been removed and anyone is free to flow about the stream looking for relevant and useful information.

Since people have “clipped” news articles, there has been content curation. Today, however, the information flow is that of a mighty raging river, and it’s easy to get lost in the current. Content curators are effective at managing a series of information pipes and sharing that with their following.

1. Collect:
The content curator’s work is never done. Minutes after perusing your RSS reader 20 more articles have been posted and the cycle starts again. In the mainstream news era, the national news came on at precisely the same time every night.

2. Curate:
- Consistent Subject Matter – Because the information flow is swift and always moving, content curators must be consistent with their niche and resist the temptation to follow whims. Define the topics that you are going to cover.
- Direct Communication – Social media has no appreciation for nuance, so as a curator, be direct.
- Filter Consistently – As news editors filtered the news that was worthy of their readership, think about what is relevant to your readership. Filter out the stories that are redundant, irrelevant or boring.

3. Communicate:
- Be human - Bring your voice to your content. Be real.
- Be frequent not a freak when you overpublish..."

Suddenly, Google Plus Is Outpacing Twitter To Become The World's Second Largest Social Network

Suddenly, Google Plus Is Outpacing Twitter To Become The World's Second Largest Social Network | Social Media | Scoop.it

When Google launched its social networking service, Google Plus, during the summer of 2011, tens of millions of people clamoured to sign up for an account.

But within months, critics had panned the new service, pointing to user pages bereft of meaningful content and exchanges. They said the new social site just wasn't, well, social. It seemed as though Facebook had cornered the market -- Google was too late to the party.

Perhaps not. According to data released this week by Internet analytics firm GlobalWebIndex, Google Plus is racking up large numbers of new users and continues to outpace Twitter as the world's number two social network, behind perennial titan Facebook.

The reasons behind Google Plus's growth -- it now can boast 359 million active users, up 33 percent from 269 million users at the end of June 2012, according to GlobalWebIndex -- are complex and tied to Google's effort to build a connecting layer across all its services, including search, YouTube, maps and other products. Log into one, and you've logged into the lot.

Google itself is tight-lipped about its numbers. Its last released figures were in December, when the search giant said 500 million people had created Google Plus accounts.

But of this number, only 135 million were actively posting to Google Plus pages. Millions more were using some of the service's features, such as clicking the "+1" button to show they liked certain web pages.

It remains far behind Facebook, which boasts 701 million active users, according to the report, though Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg last year claimed more than a billion active accounts.
