Big Data is Here: How About Actionable Insights? [Infographic]

Big Data is Here: How About Actionable Insights? [Infographic] | Social Media & Technology | Scoop.it
By now everyone from your kid’s baseball coach to the Avon lady representative can give you an earful about how (big) data and analytics lead to better decisions. But if that’s the case, why are so many of us seeing so many lousy offers? A few years ago we might have been able to argue that retailers, and other marketers, thought that big data was just a bunch of hype that didn’t actually lead to better returns. But we’ve come a long way since then. Topic: Big Data.

Fiona MacDonald's insight:

Collecting lots of data is fine, but you need to  get and use insights from all that data.

Carla Gentry CSPO's curator insight, August 9, 2014 7:34 AM

Only 16 percent of the 350 retailers and brand manufacturers surveyed consider themselves to be “experts” in deriving shopper insights from their data and using it to drive retail decisions.

That’s an expensive knowledge gap. And since nature abhors a vacuum, technology and solution providers are rushing to fill it in different ways.

Schools are signing up to teach computer coding, which some view as a basic skill for today, and the tech industry-backed group Code.org is pushing basic coding even for the very young.
Fiona MacDonald's insight:

Coding and general computing skills should be started at an early age for every school child these days. The thing that always pulled me to computing over other engineering/math subject was the ability to 'try and see' things. You could write some code and immediately test it on the computer. The same with learning HTML - that was an even easier transition to see immediate effects of changes you made.

A Curated Guide About The Best Places Where To Learn How To Code: Bento

A Curated Guide About The Best Places Where To Learn How To Code: Bento | Social Media & Technology | Scoop.it

Everything you need to know about web development. Neatly packaged. Learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python, Rails, Node, and more in each box with a set of links.

Robin Good's curator insight, April 27, 2014 2:28 PM

Bento is a website that, thanks to its author Jon Chan and the many user contributions, has gathered, organized and curated the very best resources available online where you can learn how to code.

From html to javascript, ruby, php, Java, perl, Bento offers learning guidance for over 80 different technologies and coding languages.

Here is how Jon Chan, a 23 years old who launched this project in September of 2013, describes Bento:

"Bento is what I would have liked to have when I was learning to code.

I started learning to code when I was very young - about ten years old. Then, the only things I had available were what I could find online and through a few dense books.

Now, people have the exact opposite problem: how do you break through the noise and find what's actually valuable to learn?

This site is here to help you figure that out."

Bento is a perfect example of effective content curation as it does not simply collect and list all of the resources available to learn each language but it only suggests the very best ones, organizing them in easy, medium and hard and providing also "best of" / direct solutions that save readers lots of valuable time.

Free to use.

Useful, simple and immediate to use. Well organized. 9/10
