Building brands is a lot like leaving legacies. What does it mean? Do we have the luxury of thinking we have that much control or will there be features that allow us to be dishonest with brand building?

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's curator insight, May 28, 2013 9:57 AM

Boy are these kids going to be mad at their parents by the time they're 20-somethings...  "Why didn't you protect us?"  they will ask.  "Because we didn't know better," their parents will say.

Putting a kid on the internet without knowing anything about how cookies and cache and logins and TOSs work is like handing them a handgun or putting them behind the wheel of a running car and then leaving.

J. Nolfo (@JNolfo) asked if I thought SEO was dead or dying. The short answer is YES, but I did add a sixth force to the five SEO Killers Anjum noted:

* Mobile.
* Tech.
* Google.
* Social.
* Us.

The Master Blaster controlling force, I argue in the linked post on @NewMediaLeaderz is E N T R O P Y.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, June 22, 2013 5:05 PM

Excellent article and video. Looking at the wonderful world of the internet and curation. The idea of curation of online content has become more and more inportant with the exponential growth of content on the world wide web. Being able to organise and manage all of the content is important.

Curation is about making good choices about what you share and putting it into a context for themselves and others. Being enthusiastic and thoughtful about what you choose is a way of showing what you are finding and sharing is signficant and worthwhile.

Finding the most interesting and valuable things and sharing that is the key. What you want and what you are interested in is important but you also need to consider your audience.

As usual, another great scoop by Robin Martin. This one is VERY helpful to me right now.  Thanks Robin.

From the article:

3. Use Google Alerts To Identify Clips, Comment Opportunities and Fresh News

This last tool is something more people know about: Google Alerts. It’s typically used so that you get an email every time news about your client hits the Internet.

Most set up alerts for the company name, stock symbol, executive names, brand or product names, etc. It allows them to capture a copy of the clip and monitor mentions. (Learn to set up Google Alerts here – it is also under the “More> Specialized Search” area.)

However, most PR pros don’t think to use alerts in another way: to identify news articles where they can post a client comment. When a news article hits that is relevant to your client and you aren’t taking part in it, posting a comment is a great way to join the conversation.

Robin Good's insight:

If you are interested in what could be a good workflow and set of tools to use to curate content on your own WordPress blog, Nathan Weller has a must-read article for you.

In it, he dissects and explains the tools he uses to curate content on WordPress, from how he aggregates and browses RSS feeds, to how he filters, edits and actually curates the content of each post.

Interestingly his focus is on quality, not on having his site populated by lots of "somewhat relevant" content pulled in automatically by one of the many "content marketing"-oriented curation tools available today.

I think you will find several interesting ideas that you may have not considered on how to approach your curation workflow, let alone checking the several insightful comments at the end.

Lost of valuable information, resources, examples and advice. 8/10

Billions of Geotagged Tweets Visualized in Twitter's Amazing Maps

Billions of Geotagged Tweets Visualized in Twitter's Amazing Maps | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Ever wonder what it would look like to plot every single geotagged tweet since 2009 on a map? Twitter has done just that.

Twitter posted these maps of Europe, New York City, Tokyo and Istanbul on its blog Friday. They use billions of geotagged tweets: Every dot represents a tweet, with the brighter colors showing a higher concentration of tweets. It's pretty amazing how the mapped-out tweets clearly match with population centers, highways and the like — though perhaps that's obvious.

Miles Gibson's curator insight, October 5, 2014 9:41 PM

Unit 1 Nature and Perspectives of Geography.                                 This is a map of all of the geotagged twitter posts from 2009 to now in the United States. Its shows population distribution and points of interest that people like to travel to. It shows dense population centers and highways. You can see the roads in the map because of space in the map not covered. The brighter colors are in higher population and more popular travel destinations. This is a map of many types.                                                                                                          This map is a part of unit 1 because it is a map of a basic geographic concept. This map is a functional map of sorts because it shows points of travel that people go to, but it is not varied by distance so it is not a precise version. This map is a definite example of a thematic map because it shows the story of the travel destinations of five years of their lives.

5 SEO Quick Tips From @ScentTrail

5 SEO Quick Tips From @ScentTrail | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

SEO Quick Tips
SEO is never going to be so dead sending spiders clues they can understand about what your web pages and website are about isn't a good idea. Until they perfect the digital mind, technical SEO matters and SEO is being done SO BADLY by people who should know better.

Here are Today's SEO Quick Tips
1. Company name to FAR right in title because you should rank for it automatically AND it is on your website in heavy weight.

2. Keys in rank order with MOST important to the far left in title.

3. USE Headings h1S and sub heads h2S and 3s with KEYWORDS and don't stuff (5 to 8 words max).

4. Descriptions have character limits of 150 (or so) and don't go over since it looks like spamming. Descriptions should be keyword dense AND natural sounding with copy consistent to the page.

5. Title, description and body copy should be CONSISTENT and repetitive without being spammy. When in doubt look at a competitor who outranks you.

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

A massive survey of internet users reveals trends in social media usage across numerous platforms, ages, races, genders, population density and which social media sites do they frequently visit.

The Pew Research Center has released the results of a comprehensive social media survey, conducted over several years to evaluate which demographics were using social media, and on which platforms. Which social networking sites emerged on top?

Of the online adults surveyed at the end of 2012:

67% use Facebook

20% use LinkedIn

16% use Twitter

15% use Pinterest

13% use Instagram

6% use Tumblr

A decent amount of Americans appear to be using social media, but which demographics use social media in greater numbers?

It appears that women use social media 9% more than men do, at a whopping rate of 71%. Other frontrunners with the highest social network activity in their demographic include city dwellers(70%), Hispanics (72%) and adults with a household income below $30,000 annually (72%).

The most pervasive and consistent divider amongst social media users remains, unsurprisingly, their age. 83% of the young adult demographic (18-29 year olds) use social media, which is well over double the activity of online adults over 65 years old (32%).
