Mobile, Human Curation: The Trends Behind Decline Of Google News?

Mobile, Human Curation: The Trends Behind Decline Of Google News? | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Interesting take by Hamish McKenzie on Pandodaily. In his opinion, the reason Media Publishers feel bold enough to attack Google and feel entitled to have a revenue share is that Google News is a declining service.

He lists Mobile Agregation but also Human Curation as two trends that make its algorithmic filtering less relevant.

So interestingly, while many have attributed to Google's own algorithm changes the demise of  services like Wikio, it seems that now Google's own algorithmic approach is challenged by social curation.

Move Over Obama Twitter Had a Big Night Too!

Move Over Obama Twitter Had a Big Night Too! | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

This piece from Reuters declares Twitter and social media an important part of the election process after last night's twitterverse actvity.

Here are some highlights:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama called it - in less than 140 characters.Around 11:15 pm EST, just as the networks were beginning to call the race in his favor, Obama took to Twitter to proclaim himself the winner over Republican candidate Mitt Romney. (I'm sure someone from Obama's team tweeted this) but nonetheless, the bottom line is the explosion on twitter and how important it was in this whole process.

Hopefully many businesses who have not understood the power of Twitter capturing the immediacy of feelings, trends, emotions from those who frame what's happening, to your advocates, fans, clients and customers will now understand how it can be used effectively for your cause, products, services and organization.

Here's what caught my attention:

**The fact that the president would take his message to Twitter before taking the stage in Chicago underscored the tremendouss role social media platforms like Twitter played in the 2012 election.

**"Twitter brought people closer to almost every aspect of the election this year," Horwitz said. "From breaking news, to sharing the experience of watching the debates, to interacting directly with the candidates, Twitter became a kind of nationwide caucus."

Drucker’s Knowledge Worker in the Age of Social Media: Content Curation for Professional Development

Drucker’s Knowledge Worker in the Age of Social Media: Content Curation for Professional Development | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

"Over half a century ago, management guru Peter Drucker presented the concept of the knowledge worker. Compared to the manual laborer, the knowledge worker focused on quality over quantity and worked more independently as problem solvers."

Over the many applications of Social Content Curation, Professional Development has been a strong trend. We keep observing it on Scoop.it but it's also been reported by Social Media influencers.

As more and more of us become Knowledge Worker, it should be no suprise that Content takes a growing importance on our Professional lives. So here's our take on it and why we announced this new integration with LinkedIn earlier today.

Time To Embrace The Digital Future Australia

Time To Embrace The Digital Future Australia | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

How do retailers develop and execute on the right digital and off-line cross channel strategy to maximise consumer engagement?

In today’s multichannel world, the boundaries between virtual and physical stores are blurred and competition from international retailers is growing. The local retail landscape has irrevocably changed - from “bricks and mortar” to “bricks and clicks” to purely “e-tail” – the evolution of retail is ongoing and carries significant ramifications for those who choose not to keep up with the pace of change.

The Experian Marketing Services Infographic looks at the changes to the local retail landscape and the ongoing evolution of the industry into the digital space, highlighting the research and statistics found in the Australian Retail and Digital Future 2012 Report.

Experian Marketing Services commissioned research amongst 300 Australian retailers from B2B and B2C organisations to gain a more complete picture of the Australian e-commerce environment.

This report examines the retailers’ responses, and draws upon the Experian Marketing Services experience and expertise in the online retail environment to provide commentary on the current state of online retail in Australia. It offers a way forward for those retailers seeking to overcome perceived barriers and develop a sound e-commerce strategy that will carry their business into the future.

Joanna's results are in:  Check out the click through rates (CTR) from tweets and how this varied by the number of followers, day of the week and time of tweet

Twitter is a great way to build and engage an audience with short, timely, relevant messages, but if you’re trying to drive traffic to your website, what results should you expect in terms of click-through rates?

Check out this Infographic by Joanna Franchetti from Sign-Up, who analysed tens of thousands of tweets sent through Sign-Up’s Twitter marketing tools in the first seven months of 2012 to find out the answer.

Joanna's study results focused on average click through rates (CTR) from tweets and how this varied by the number of followers, day of the week and time of tweet.

Findings include:

The average CTR for a tweet is 1.64% (just over half the rate of email, which averages 2.95%) CTR declines rapidly as your number of followers increases.  Clicks tend to increase later in the day, peaking at around 6pm.

Do You Know How Social Currency Influences Behavior?

Do You Know How Social Currency Influences Behavior? | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it
Conversation Agent quotes on Influence from Valeria Maltoni It's the age of the connected customer and people are now comfortable using technology to share -- privately or in public.

Here are some highlights:

How social currency influences behavior

**Social influences include peer pressure and social exchange. The latter is stronger than an economic motive.

**Most human interactions consist of an exchange of value. From a psychological standpoint, actions like sharing signal desire for self expression, need for validation, and social status recognition, and also simply altruism and affinity with a group or cause.

**Both social influences are amplified in public settings.

Psychologist Robert Cialdini documented six principles of ethical persuasion:

**social proof

**authority

**affinity

**commitment

**consistency

**reciprocity

Social Business = Social Bonding

Social Business = Social Bonding | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

This piece is from MITSLoan Management Review with some great findings about the benefits of social business.

What is really happening in social business?

Intro:

A study by FedEx and Ketchum found:

** 52% of respondents said social business was strengthening relationships with the general public

**51% said it was strengthening relationships with clients

**40% said it was strengthening relationships with partners and suppliers

Here are some highlights:

**connections between social business and improved stakeholder relationships is supported by other researchers in the field.

In a recent interview with MIT SMR, strategy and management consultant Nilofer Merchant discussed how her research found that social enhances a firm’s relationships with employees and customers.

Jacob Morgan, principal of Chess Media Group, a management consulting and strategic advisory firm on collaboration and the author of The Collaborative Organization (McGraw-Hill, 2012), told us that based on his observations, the benefits of collaboration even positively impacts the quality of life of employees at home, outside of the workplace.

Dion Hinchcliffe, in his four-stage Capability Ladder of Social Business, says that the highest level in the ladder is also relationship based, what he calls the ability to “partner with the world.”

Takeaway:

**Some benefits, like good relationships, don’t require an ROI study.

Workplace Social Media Infographic: Seize the Opportunity, HR Must Embrace Social

Workplace Social Media Infographic: Seize the Opportunity, HR Must Embrace Social | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

It's not about controlling & setting up rules, it's about giving social a bear hug! HR Must Embrace Social ~ more than compliance.

The last time I went to a statewide HR conference several things happened:

the social media presenter didn't show up, (8 a.m. session), the other social media topics were about controlling social media behavior in companies, one taught by a lawyer / compliance person my own topic on peer learning and social media overload was met with some angst and even fear.

And...I learned a few things about the current state of things in the HR world.

A year has passed, and I'll be going back hopefully to share a new perspective on how shared learning and collaboration, with some good social media policy developed by staff themselves and good technology tools, can greatly help collaboration, creativity and learning on the job.

Enjoy the infographic.

NetMarketShare: Mobile Market Share Passes 10% for First Time | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Netmarkshare is reporting that aggregate mobile usage has passed 10% across all websites for the first time. The bulk of that usage is attributable to iOS which comes in at ~60%. Obviously not all of that usage is truly mobile as the iPad has become an early evening and late night alternative to desktop browsing. It is now time for tablets to be tracked separately from mobile phones so that the market can better understand the distribution of usage.

Finally, Easy Stuff for WordPress: 6 Reasons to Install AND USE the WordPress Jetpack Plugin

Finally, Easy Stuff for WordPress: 6 Reasons to Install AND USE the WordPress Jetpack Plugin | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

"This review of Jetpack got me over my doldrums and disaffected non-blogging status with my WordPress website.  It's a very handy and FREE set of tools!"

I've implemented the social media integration already via my self-hosted Wordpress site: REVELN.com.   This social media share plug-in element IN PARTICULAR is EASY.  Finally, Wordpress!

Glossy, media rich platforms that don't so much need the heavy lifting of html like Posterous and Tumblr still dazzle, but at least WP is catching up with this fantastic plugin pack with it's very own navigation menu.

Why, I might even mini-blog this and pin it on one of my 45 Pinterest boards.  Heh, and you might think I'm kidding.

Below is the #1 reason from the Jetpack review on why Wordpress users will want to take a look at this cool plugin pack.

Excerpted:

1. Easy to Install, Setup, and Learn

Jetpack could not be easier to install and set up, considering how many different benefits it provides.

To install it, just go to Plugins –> Add New and then type “jetpack” into the search box. It’ll be the first result.

Hit “Install Now” and you’re ready to go (unless you need to create a WordPress.com account, which is necessary so you can link it with your blog and Jetpack).

Once you’ve got the plugin activated, it will create its own dashboard nav bar menu section right at the top.

If you want to see the social media I now am using, thanks to JetPack, which made it EASY, go to THIS blog post, "Open Space on Speed: Social Business with the Coaches, Results! Video"  and scroll down to the bottom.

Note the social media icons and ease with which you can comment and share!  (And DO feel free to share with comments! :-)

===

Enjoy.  There's something there for just about everyone, it seems.

Without an Audience your Brand means nothing

Without an Audience your Brand means nothing | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it
Social Media is now the leading form of Marketing due to the increase and need from customers to hear from other peers about reviews on any type of product.

In order for you to build your brand online you need to target a market, for example if you sell cupcakes use your social sites to not promote your cupcakes, but to tap into cupcake enthusiasts by sharing unique recipes and photos of crafty cupcakes for those types of foodies.

Then, every once in a while share your cupcake of the month or a creatively designed cupcake that your business makes and it will blend together and increase your chances of a lead.

Have fun and be natural when posting, don’t force anything but be willing to try new things..
