Every Company Can Be a Media Company. And should be.

Every Company Can Be a Media Company. And should be. | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

"If there's a universal truth in the digital age it's that there's too much content and not enough time to consume it. Naturally, a challenge this large and far reaching is creating opportunities for innovators." writes Steve Rubel of Edelman on the new LinkedIn Tought Leaders section.

He goes on to explain how Scott Beale of Laughing Squid is a great example of using curation to become a media that serves the purpose of developing a company's brand in the age of online media.

"The lesson here is that any company can potentially benefit by thinking and acting like a media company (...) However,you don't necessarily need to create original content."

Great case study.

As a brand development tool..becoming a publisher is a great idea..however...there are good publishers and bad publishers..in the early days of the internet when eveyone thought building a web site was agreat idea..we saw a lot of "bad" website design...from both an aesthetic view and a information view...I fear history may repeat itself with these new curated content sites...that said I am also experimenting with the concept and suggest everyone look for advice when launching their "site"...

Getting in Bed with Gadgets - The psychology behind why we feel so addicted to our gadgets

Getting in Bed with Gadgets - The psychology behind why we feel so addicted to our gadgets | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

There’s no question that in recent years, regular smartphone, tablet, and other gadget users have developed a strong bond with their technology.

More and more people find themselves riddled with separation anxiety if they leave their phone at home, or even if it’s in a different room. For many gadget users, a popular time to get really plugged in to technology is in the downtime right before bed—in fact, more and more people will say that they can’t sleep without spending time reading a tablet, browsing the web, or watching Netflix.

But this particular time for gadget addiction, right before going to sleep, can be more harmful than helpful to good rest. New studies show that not only are most people sleeping with their smartphones in the bed with them, they’re also struggling to sleep well, even if they don’t realize it. Not only does the light from your gadgets suppress sleep-inducing melatonin, there’s a good chance that you’ve been woken up by a call or text message in the middle of the night recently. In fact, many people say that if they happen to awake in the middle of the night, the natural reaction is to reach for their phone.

The psychology behind why we feel so addicted to our gadgets is a field that is just now burgeoning, and for the future health of technology users everywhere, it’s probably worth looking into.

Visual Information & How It Affects Website Traffic [Infographic] | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it
Educate yourself about the importance of visual information on your website. With infographics, you will gain a lot more traffic for your growing website.

Visual information is processed faster by the brain, with 90% of all the information that we take in is visual. But the thing with visual information is also that unless it’s a really good story or article, people don’t want to read through a whole page of text when he or she could do something else more fun. So, throw in an infographic with visual information, and you’ll have a winner...

How do you know if your blog is making an impact?

How do you know if your blog is making an impact? | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

"Working so hard to make your blog great can be depressing without feedback. And that's difficult to come by!"

Mark Schaeffer touches a very interesting point of social media in general and blogging in particular.

Why the heck am I doing that?

This is the question you will sooner or later ask yourself if you started a blog or a social media publishing activity. If you've followed us for a while, you know this is one of the frustration we had that pushed us to create Scoop.it. And also the more important question of how do you make an impact?

One of the answers we found is in developing the interest graph. Some people have the ability to impact many. That's rare. And most of us don't. But all of us have the ability to impact other people that share their interest. By looking at the complexity of the social web through the prism of interests, we come out with a totally different possible way to organize the web, define influence and being impactful.

Think about it this way: in what you do everyday, is it more important to influence a million random strangers or the tens or hundreds of people who care deeply about the same topic that you do?

They’re inviting schools to print it out here and put it up around school buildings to hopefully remind students on the best ways to avoid and deal with any cyberbullying issues.

The 3 Best Social Media Tactics to Get More Customers | Social Media Today

The 3 Best Social Media Tactics to Get More Customers | Social Media Today | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it
Social media can be used effectively to drive sales.Because it helps you distribute marketing messages further, faster, and cheaper than ever before. But most companies struggle, or don't see any return at all.

The reason has nothing to do with how many hashtags you use, or how often you update Facebook.

And everything to do with execution on one -- or all -- of these three tactics.

Tactic #1: Partnerships
One of the best ways to see quick growth is to "piggyback" off other sources.

Tactic #2: Advertising
Contrary to what "social media experts" think, advertising is still a great way to get more traffic, leads and customers.

Tactic #3: Content Marketing
Online, content can give you multiple returns. It can increase your brand awareness, help you get links for SEO, and position your content to "go viral" in social media.

How To Create, Curate & Connect People Who Are Fired Up For Change

How To Create, Curate & Connect People Who Are Fired Up For Change | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

This piece is from Fastcompany it's from The World Vision Activism Network. (October 2012) I selected it because there are some great takeaways whether you have a community or are starting one from scratch.

Intro:

When you build a brand, one of the most important measures of success is the actual engagement and connection of your loyal customers, followers, supporters, partners, fans and friends--your community.

The digital age and 24/7 connectivity, social platforms are forcing companies to find new and compelling ways to keep up with daily communication and connection with the people who matter the most

Here are a few highlights:

Create a long-term relationship

**You must understand your audience's interessts

**Use the most popular form of communication

**You have to be available and ready to interact to keep them actively engaged.

. Listen to people

**Pay attention to where and how your key people want to communicate, what they want to talk about and what they actualy do.

**Build the community they demand - use posters, art, videos and whatever connects with your audience on a digital platform that is eaily accessed & shred through a space where your audience is already spending time

Create it & Continually Influence Your Audience

**You must be an active participant on a regular basis

]

**By continually sharing, creating, leading and converse with the people you want to influence to establish a long-lasting relationship.

**By staying actively engaged, you will become easy to relate to and your audience will learn more about you, creating a closer relationship

Turn Your Pinterest Board Into an Online Store with Shopinterest | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for ways to sell your own merchandise, product or service on Pinterest here is new service that helps you do just that.

ShopInterest.co is an e-commerce platform that lets anyone turn their Pinterest boards into online stores making it easy for anyone to sell most any kind of merchandise to their Pinterest followers.

How it works: "The easiest way to describe what the service does is to call it a “Shopify for Pinterest.” Like Shopify, ShopInterest is a DIY service, but in this case, it’s not about building a traditional online store – it’s about turning your Pinterest board into a store.

To get started with the service, users sign in, select the boards where their products are shown, add a description, price and shipping charges, and select how they want to get paid.

The rest of the setup is handled by ShopInterest."
