3 Surprising Social Media Statistics That Will Make You Rethink Your Social Strategy

3 Surprising Social Media Statistics That Will Make You Rethink Your Social Strategy | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

The most surprising social media statistics from 2013.

Excerpted from a list of 10:

1. THE FASTEST GROWING DEMOGRAPHIC ON TWITTER IS THE 55–64 YEAR AGE BRACKET.

This demographic has grown 79% since 2012.The 45–54 year age bracket is the fastest growing demographic on both Facebook and Google+.For Facebook, this group has jumped 46%.For Google+, 56%.

2. 189 MILLION OF FACEBOOK’S USERS ARE "MOBILE ONLY"      Mobile use generates 30% of Facebook’s ad revenue as well. This is a 7% increase from the end of 2012 already.

6. LINKEDIN HAS A LOWER PERCENTAGE OF ACTIVE USERS THAN PINTEREST, GOOGLE+, TWITTER AND FACEBOOK

Although LinkedIn is gathering new users at a fast rate, the number of active users is lower than most of the biggest social networks around. So more people are signing up, but they’re not participating.

This means you’re probably not going to have as good a response with participatory content on LinkedIn, like contests or polls, as you might on Facebook or Twitter.

Rethink it: If you’re hoping to get people involved, think about which platforms are best for that. ...Twitter and Facebook....might be a better place for your contest or survey, while passive content like blog posts or slide decks might be just right for your LinkedIn audience.

What Does a Day in Social Media Look Like? [Infographic] | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Of the world's roughly 7 billion people, 40% use social media daily. So, what are those folks doing on the major social platforms?

The following infographic by Saxum shows the daily activity on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Vine, Google+, and Tumblr, measured against each platform's total user base.

On Facebook, some 23% of users check newsfeed more than five times a day, 2.7 billion people give Facebook posts a Like, and Twitter's active users contribute 400 million tweets a day...

Stephen Dale's curator insight, January 13, 2:58 AM

People who use Google are given the impression that they are interacting with the data out there, but they are actually interacting with Google and its view of the world.

"They are prediction engines that constantly refine a theory about who you are and what you are going to do or want next. Together, they create an universe of data for each one of us."

"In a 2010 paper published in the Scientific American journal, Tim Berners-Lee warned about companies developing ever more “closed” products and “data islands”.

"Morville, in his book Search Patterns, says that the first and second results receive 80% of attention. The vertical approach suggests to the user the idea of a single result that fully answers the question, enclosing possibilities and preventing alternative realization."

Or in other words, is our acceptance of what we see in search results eroding our ability (or willingness) to consider alternatives and employ critical thinking?

Lucy Beaton's curator insight, January 16, 5:21 PM

This is alarming.  We, as Teacher Librarians, need to be aware of the ramifications of this.

Informative post from Pinterest.  Which of the stages below do you think Pinterest is most often used in?

Pinterest is a tool that people use to plan their lives— from what they’ll make for dinner this week to the someday vacation of their dreams.

To use Pinterest successfully for your brand, think about the interests your business has in common with your customers. For a food company, it might be cooking. For a travel company, it might be vacation planning. For an outdoor goods retailer, it’s likely helping people discover and go on great hikes.

Whatever the interest, people tend to pursue them through four stages:

1. Aspiration: the moment you get inspired to pursue a specific interest (say, taking up golf)

2. Anticipation: the phase where people look into the interest and start prepping to actually do it (like, researching golf clubs).

3. Participation: (this is the fun part!) when people actually participate in the interest they’ve decided to pursue (like, playing nine holes at a local course)

4. Reflection: where people reflect on the activity, maybe by taking a photo and framing it or sharing it on a social network

It doesn’t simply speak about conversions – it speaks to the other business uses of social media: Brand Marketing, Thought Leaderhsip, Service and Sales Prospecting. Much of the strength of social media doesn’t come from the immediate push… it’s the echos and volume that are established over time.

Siri Anderson's curator insight, January 26, 11:20 AM

I find it interesting to note parallels and contrasts between use of social networks in f2f environments and online environments.  In some instances the online version works better for those who flounder in person. In some cases people who love the real world interactions disparage the online ones. But for most of us, there seems to be a parallel in our patterns and style it would seem. Where should children "learn" how to do this, or is that lesson beside the point at this time?

Relevant and intriguing post by Chad Abushanab.

Here is my favorite section:

We need to foster an environment of inclusivity. And while social networking gives the impression of being just that, we have to keep in mind whether we are including the right people—the people who will most benefit—in our conversations.

No matter how much personal progress you feel you’re making when discussing a student’s shortcoming online, the fact is you are deliberately excluding the student—forcing his educational needs into the corner while your particular pedagogical gripes are addressed and spotlighted.

Don’t get me wrong—as educators we have a commitment to personal-professional and intellectual growth. But in the case of the off-the-cuff Facebook rant, we are using nameless students as vehicles for our conversations, which are, for the most part, very public and prone to indiscretion.

5 ways corporate culture determines social media success - Schaefer Marketing Solutions: We Help Businesses {grow} | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

Social media success and failure is not usually determined by resources, vision, or ability.  It is inevitably a function of the personality of the organization.

The author covers the five signs that your company culture may be getting in the way of your progress including:

Corporate culture mis-match — ...the realistic capabilities of your company culture.  Is your company ready to become a publisher? Are they able to react? Are they truly open to the idea of customer dialogue?

Lack of executive engagement - To be successful in the long-term, you must have support from the top. Why? That’s who controls the purse strings and resources! That’s the person setting the strategy.

This post provides a window into how values (including hidden values) trumps the best of intentions as well as the "shiny toy" syndrome of social media.  Being on trend is not a successful strategy if leadership and culture will not support it.

Hidden values like

  • fear of entering into dialog / exchange with customers,
  • avoidance-oriented management cadre (often revealed in the quality of feedback in peformance management systems), and
  • inconsistent or vague leadership messages about what's most important in how the company meets its mission and vision

will doom any social media company initiative, or relegate it to an inconsequential minor, and low-impact role.

Social Media is making SEO more personal

Social Media is making SEO more personal | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

The game has changed.

Now, in 2013 and beyond, Social Media is playing an increasingly important role in how your blog content ranks in Search Engines.

'Social signals continue to correlate very well with better rankings' – SearchMetrics'

SearchMetrics found that Google +1s, Tweets, Pinterest shares and all Facebook activity (shares, likes & comments) had a significant correlation to higher search engine placement. In fact the only non-social measure in the top 8 correlating measure was the number of backlinks.

And it looks like social media signals will become increasingly important to SEO for the foreseeable future.

The challenge this presents is the ability to create a vibrant community on social media. Since the more vibrant your community is, then the more successful your posts will be as they will be shared severally within the commmunity, hence increasing brand visibility.

That said, it is a good problem since we all have the capacity to network and create great communities.

The Three Pillars Of SEO In 2013: Content, Links, And Social Media | Social Media Butterflies | Scoop.it

A good SEO strategy is the difference between your business easily being found online and getting lost in the noise of thousands of other businesses trying to stand out. With Google’s ever-changing algorithm, it can be difficult to know what’s effective here and now.

In 2013, success in SEO hinges on businesses putting together a robust combination strategy that brings together an integrated web of great content, credible links, and social signals. Each of these pieces supports the other, providing tremendous value to readers, building your authority and brand value, and distributing your content across new channels. Here are the highlights of what to think about in terms of each of the three pillars of great SEO.
