Pinterest announced that it's now allowing users to set up business accounts (as opposed to personal accounts), along with releasing business-specific terms of service, separate from the TOS for regular folks.


Pinterest cited the contribution of quality content from the business community as a reason for launching these business-specific accounts


Great job HubSpot for sharing this useful piece, including converting personal accounts to business accounts (those that are already mostly business accounts anyway!)

Twitter is a great way to build and engage an audience with short, timely, relevant messages, but if you’re trying to drive traffic to your website, what results should you expect in terms of click-through rates?

 

Check out this Infographic by Joanna Franchetti from Sign-Up, who analysed tens of thousands of tweets sent through Sign-Up’s Twitter marketing tools in the first seven months of 2012 to find out the answer.

 

Joanna's study results focused on average click through rates (CTR) from tweets and how this varied by the number of followers, day of the week and time of tweet.

 

Findings include:  


The average CTR for a tweet is 1.64% (just over half the rate of email, which averages 2.95%) CTR declines rapidly as your number of followers increases.  Clicks tend to increase later in the day, peaking at around 6pm.

DN:  Twitter is peerless in its current, to the moment sensing of what is going on in the world and the ease with which connections happen.  Leadership + social, however, moves slowly, as attested by the CEO of HootSuite.  HootSuite has been my favorite twitter management tool, by the way.  

 

Leader reluctance to fully understand the impact and usefulness of social media may be to their company's detriment, via new findings released by McKinsey as well as learning which big companies are investing in social now.

Among CEOs of the world’s Fortune 500 companies, a mere 20 have Twitter accounts. Larry Ellison, the Oracle CEO, by the way, hasn’t tweeted since.

 

A new report from McKinsey Global Institute, however, makes yet another business case for social media:

  

According to an analysis of 4,200 companies by the business consulting giant, social technologies stand to unlock from $900 billion to $1.3 trillion in value.   At the high end, that approaches Australia’s annual GDP.   Two-thirds of the value ...rests in “improved communications and collaboration within and across enterprises...”     Any human interaction in the workplace can be "socialized"--endowed with the speed, scale, and disruptive economics of the Internet.

Even Twitter-phobic CEOs may have a hard time ignoring that business case.

This a timely and important piece from Mark Schaefer of {grow} in which he touches upon several issues which confront all of us who are trying to keep our heads above water in the ever-evolving world of Social Media.

 

To quote: "Not only do the platforms shift every day, the rules of engagement change constantly, too. Can anybody keep up with the real (and rumored) changes just to Facebook's EdgeRank formula? What we considered best practices six months ago are passé today. Social media is overwhelming, especially when there is pressure to master every new platform that comes along  How do you keep up?."

 

Remember:

 

** Platforms may change but marketing fundamentals remain the same

 

** Absolutely nobody can navigate this changing world alone as there are too many facets to it, so form a mutually beneficial support group.

 

** There's too much informationfor any one person to keep on top of all of it, so pick a main focus and try really hard to keep mainly to that.

 

** Know your audience and go where you will find them. This might mean giving up on one of the major platforms.  Swallow hard and do it!

 

** The more successful you become and the more your reach grows, the less time you will have to engage one-on-one with people. Don't let yourself feel guilty about this as it is inevitable.

 

** Go to a trusted source for information but be warned: Such a place may not (yet) exist.
