Although there have been so many more social media networking sites mushrooming around us, never before had I heard this much ‘buzz’ about a particular platform. And as it is indeed the masses that make or break these kinds of networks, I thought: let’s take the bull by the horns—after all since its launch, Pinterest has been the fastest growing independent site ever with 10 million unique monthly visitors. Want to break it down further? On an average, Pinterest draws an impressive 1.5 million unique visitors per day, and typically each visit lasts on an average of 15 minutes. Truth be told, Pinterest is far more addictive than 15 minutes of usage—nonetheless, did you know that last month, January 2012, Pinterest generated more referral traffic than YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn combined? Granted YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn aren’t necessarily the hottest of social media websites but they do factor above the Flickrs, and StumbleUpons.

Debbie Henley at Social Media Examiner has created an A-to-Z guide of using Pinterest to the advantage of your business…unless, of course, you've decided to jump on the MANterist wagon instead – dream on, boys! Since pinning seems to be all the rage these days, it’s worthwhile to explore how your business could be using this hot new social media property to boost profits. Debbie Henley at Social Media Examiner has created an A-to-Z guide of using Pinterest to the advantage of your business…unless, of course, you’ve decided to jump on the MANterist wagon instead – dream on, boys! #1: Add a Pinterest “Follow” and/or “Pin It” Button One important way to let your clients and prospects know about your presence on Pinterest is to add a Pinterest button. Pinterest has several choices available on their goodies page. Find the one that works for you. When you add a Pin It button, you can encourage your customers and readers to pin your products onto Pinterest. #2: Brands and Pinterest While Pinterest hasn’t yet created a distinction between a personal profile and brand page (like Facebook), early adopting brands are making good use of their Pinterest presences and the pins and boards they’re sharing. Brian Honigman points out that because Pinterest’s integration with Facebook is still only for personal profiles and not fan pages,* you should choose the email associated with your brand’s Twitter account to set up your Pinterest profile. “Once you’re on Pinterest, it’s time to either keep the profile photo that’s been pulled from your Twitter account or upload a new one… You can alter the name and email associated with your account, add a location and website and then add a brief description of your brand. Here you can also choose to link your Twitter profile to your Pinterest account publicly.”

Here are some tips to get more followers on Twitter and at the same time avoid annoying your Twitter followers: 1. Thank everyone who follows you, but don't give them a sales pitch in the process. That leaves a very bad taste as the first communication you have with your new follower. Remember what your Mom said: "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression." She was a smart cookie - listen to her advice. Make your thanks unique, honest and non-commercial. 2. Don't send stupid tweets. No, really. Listen to me on this one. If you send 10 tweets a day about how you are going to the store, walking your dog and washing your hair, you will lose followers, period. Don't do it. It makes your tweets seem like a really boring reality show. 3. Don't send excessive tweets, no matter what the topic. If you send endless tweets all day long, people will start avoiding your tweets and not read them. You want your followers to hang on your every word, not treat you like a phone call from your annoying Cousin Julie (You know, the one you roll your eyes at when you see her name pop up on Caller ID. Admit it. I know you do.)! 4. Send interesting tweets. Send tweets that no one else does. Send tweets that your followers love. (Like my Star Trek trivia tweets. Those are a hoot. It's okay. You can admit you want to follow me now just so you can get those.) 5. Let your list evolve naturally. Don't just add 1000 people in 2 days just because you can. It is far better and more productive to add smaller numbers and have more quality instead of thinking "bigger is better" - really. Having a large number of people you follow in a short time can be a red flag for people and the sign of a spammer.
