You are Facebook's product, not customer

People need to understand that they are the product of Facebook and not the customer, according to media theorist and writer Douglas Rushkoff... Word for word what I said at workshops/conferences the last few weeks. We are assets, collateral to be sold to marketing/advertising customers.

Neuroscience: Our kids' glorious new age of distraction

According to Cathy N. Davidson, a professor of interdisciplinary studies at Duke University, and the author of the new book "Now You See It: How Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work, and Learn," much of the panic about children's shortened attention spans isn't just misguided, it's harmful. Younger generations, she argues, don't just think about technology more casually, they're actually wired to respond to it in a different manner than we are, and it's up to us -- and our education system -- to catch up to them.

5 things SMEs should know about Klout

"If you have Klout, you may be automatically upgraded to a better room at a Las Vegas hotel. Your Klout score may get you preferential treatment the next time you call into a customer service center. People with Klout have been eligible for a free Spotify invitation, a free Virgin America flight and free Starbucks coffee. Some job candidates are even putting their Klout scores on their resumes.

Here are five things every small business person should know about Klout, the hot social media influence service.

1. Klout is a social metrics service that's getting a lot of attention
2. Klout isn't about having lots of Twitter followers or facebook friends
3. Klout isn't the only social scoring system
4. Using Klout, SMBs can target influencers with news and promotions
5. To increase your Klout score, be authentically helpful."

No empathy, no connection, no credibility: how does your business look?

This Forbes post doesn't go far enough for me. Look at how successful web businesses have grown: by focusing on their customers' needs, and to hell with everything else. Do your meetings start by looking at which direction the line is heading, or by asking: how did we serve our customers today, and how can we do better tomorrow?

Social business is about aligning social good with strong revenue generation - in that order.
