After restricting successive Commissioners for Children, it is unbelievable that Labor is now claiming to have a change of heart on more oversight, on the eve of an election. An extended role for the Commissioner for Children and advocacy for children was recommended by a Parliamentary Inquiry in 2011. Labor ignored this recommendation, and pulled apart the excellent voluntary children’s visitor program. For Michelle O’Byrne to now say she is willing to extend the role of Commissioner is beyond belief.
