How Social Networks Are Redefining Journalism

How Social Networks Are Redefining Journalism | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

“... community manager Meghan Peters discussed how social networks are evolving their content strategies, with Jessica Bennett, editorial director at Tumblr, and Daniel Roth, executive editor at LinkedIn.

“Both editors come from traditional journalism backgrounds. Bennett was formerly an editor at Newsweek, and Roth worked at Fortune. Bennett said that Tumblr's traffic is three times that of The New York Times and CNN. There are more than 80 million blogs and 170 million users, more than 50% of whom are under 30.”

Social media pushes government, says Clement

Social media pushes government, says Clement | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

In Canada, Treasury Board president Tony Clement explained how popular opinion (via tweets and emails) inspired direct action from the national government:

" 'We decided to send a signal to the CRTC that if they came after the government of Canada with the status quo [and not change the decision] … we would just veto it. So I was enabled by the Prime Minister’s office to get that out on Twitter first.'

"[Clement] claimed the tweet created a controversy because he went 'direct to the people' and not through mainstream media. 'We were trying to break new ground,' Clement said."
