Reporting Live, from Tumblr

Reporting Live, from Tumblr | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

At the Republican National Convention, some people were reporting in a non-traditional way. “... they're posting exclusively to Tumblr. They're also posting for Tumblr, as part of one the site's early forays into original journalism.” HT @jayrosen_nyu.

Lauren McCullough: Twitter can be a ‘streamlining savior’ for journalists

Lauren McCullough: Twitter can be a ‘streamlining savior’ for journalists | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

Lauren McCullough was the “audience and engagement manager” for the Associated Press at the time of this interview. She has since moved to MSNBC.com.

“I’m a big proponent of having one account per social network that you use personally and professionally. It’s what we encourage AP’s journalists to do. I’d guesstimate that I’m about 2/3 professional, 1/3 personal, but it really depends on the day (and how bad my commute was).”

Tumblr: Online’s New Frontier for Publishers

Tumblr: Online’s New Frontier for Publishers | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

Publishers are getting juiced about Tumblr and its versatility to reach readers and create platforms for authors, according to Publishers Weekly. Journalists can take a cue from legacy publishers and begin experimenting with Tumblr's social networking capabilities to reach a growing, hip demographic.

From the article: "Tumblr provides an opportunity to speak directly to readers and, more importantly, to hear directly back from them.” For publishers, using Tumblr puts them in a vast network of (mostly) younger voices: the platform has 45 million blogs, and more than half of its users are under 34, with an even split between men and women."

30 Must-See Tumblr Blogs

30 Must-See Tumblr Blogs | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

"It's barely five years old, but the microblogging platform Tumblr already rakes in 15 billion page views every month. With all that buzz, we thought we'd showcase the best accounts out there ..."

(Published Jan. 26, 2012.) Tumblr is not good for some uses -- but it's GREAT for some (other) uses. I like this selection of Tumblr blogs because it illustrates the diversity of the Tumblr platform.

How Social Networks Are Redefining Journalism

How Social Networks Are Redefining Journalism | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

“... community manager Meghan Peters discussed how social networks are evolving their content strategies, with Jessica Bennett, editorial director at Tumblr, and Daniel Roth, executive editor at LinkedIn.

“Both editors come from traditional journalism backgrounds. Bennett was formerly an editor at Newsweek, and Roth worked at Fortune. Bennett said that Tumblr's traffic is three times that of The New York Times and CNN. There are more than 80 million blogs and 170 million users, more than 50% of whom are under 30.”

A tener en cuenta estos datos que son abrumadores Tumblr tiene 3 veces más tráfico que el New York TImes y la CNN con más de 80 millones de blogs y 170 millones de usuarios de los que más del 50 % tienen menos de 30 años.

Audiencia, Plataforma, Periodismo, Rentabilidad. Función Social. Cómo conjugar estos pilares para dar con el modelo de negocio que haga posible un nuevo periodismo en una sociedad que está cambiando tan drásticamente su forma de comunicarse y de informarse.

How The New York Times Does Social Media

How The New York Times Does Social Media | Social Media and Journalists | Scoop.it

“I talked with Alexis Mainland, social media editor at The NY Times, to learn more about their vision for solidifying The Times’ brand over several different platforms, and how photography has played a major role in their success.”

Mainland: “Social media platforms are like different countries with different languages and different customs. Certainly there are many aspects of them that overlap, but I think the key to being successful on a social platform is having a keen understanding of what makes each unique community tick.”
