The 9 dumbest ways to measure social media

The 9 dumbest ways to measure social media | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

By Kent LEWIS

There are a host of issues created by meaningless metrics, which include but are not limited to: wasting time, wasting money, and making bad decisions based on inaccurate, incomplete, or incomprehensible data.

More depressing than being easily gamed by humans is the fact that Klout scores have been vulnerable to manipulation by robots and related tools. As such, it's dangerous when companies use it to make decisions, from hiring to assessing the "influence" of fans and rewarding (or ignoring) them accordingly.

The fix: Take Klout with grain of salt and a shot of tequila. To get the most value from Klout, focus on trending your score and benchmarking against competitors.

Why Klout is Dangerous | Business 2 Community

Why Klout is Dangerous | Business 2 Community | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
I have posted two previous articles and one at SMM Magazine on the Klout menace.

Mark Schaefer has recently posted a number of warnings on his excellent blog, Grow. But I think the topic deserves another visit.

Mechanically measuring someone’s influence using an algorithm is going to be imprecise and quirky. Does anyone really believe that Justin Bieber is the most influential living being? or even the most influential online American?

I check my ratings on PeerIndex, Klout and TweetGrader and my rank on SMM marketing professors list, but don’t get distraught when I have slipped a point or another highly followed marketing professor has emerged. It is kind of fun to see how I and my online friends are rated and ranked.

Got Twitter? What's Your Influence Score

Got Twitter? What's Your Influence Score | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Companies are scouring social networks, looking for the new “influencers.”... IMAGINE a world in which we are assigned a number that indicates how influential we are. This number would help determine whether you receive a job, a hotel-room upgrade or free samples at the supermarket. If your influence score is low, you don’t get the promotion, the suite or the complimentary cookies.

Klout and PeerIndex Don’t Measure Influence

Klout and PeerIndex Don’t Measure Influence | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Whether you like it not, Klout, Kred, PeerIndex, and Radian6 are measuring your social capital -- not your influence but your potential for it.

===> For the world’s social media users: accept that you’re already being indexed by these services, and they’re going to sell data about you. <===

‘Influence’ scores are going to become more important with time. Once they reach a threshold of accuracy, you can bet a new wave of brands will start rewarding and providing better service to people identified as influencers...
