The History of Hashtags in Social Media Marketing

The History of Hashtags in Social Media Marketing [INFOGRAPHIC]

Ahmed Alkandari's curator insight, September 28, 4:10 PM

The online use of the hashtags began on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) in the late 1990s and it was used to categorize items into groups. Designer Chris Messina is the first person to use the hashtags on twitter on 2007. He tweeted: '"how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in # barcamp [msg] ?"

Tweeters started using hashtags and after this, Instagram and other social medias has adopted it. Today, hashtags are everywhere and they become an important part for every modern marketing strategy. The use of the hashtag symbol have become a huge part of trends and discussions in social media. Hashtags was first used in circa 1988 to categorize items into groups. Which made it also easy for IRC users to search for content. On July 2009, twitter formally adopted the use of hashtags into code, automatically hyperlinking terms appended with the # sign.

How will hashtags benefit your business?

- Increase your brand awareness: hashtags makes it easier for companies and businesses to engage with their customers and their targeted audiences in discussions and give them details about their product.

- Helps build relationships: helps to know what your target market are interested in and build a great relationships with them.

- Hashtags increases brand loyalty: provide your targeted audiences with greater insights about your brand or business.

I found this article very interesting specially knowing that hashtags were first used back in 1990s! I thought that hashtags were first used on twitter and its a new thing on technology and social media world. Hashtags become very popular and important on social media. any updates or breaking news will spread quickly and fast on these hashtags. Most companies nowadays consider and tracks what people share on hashtags and read the comments that people shares. for some companies, hashtag is a threat because if one customer shares a claim or something that may affect the company, it will spread very fast and people all over the world will know about it.

Lowes Fix in Six- Best Use of Vine

Stephanie Mattioli's curator insight, September 15, 1:23 PM

When I came across the article, Lowes Fix in Six; Wins My Prize for Best Use of Vine, I was eager to know what was so special about Lowes’ approach on Vine. As a marketing student, I am always curious to understand the ways in which each brand utilizes the diverse social media platforms to build their brand image. Vine is a platform that I am the least comfortable with because I find it hard to showcase quality within a six second video clip, let alone a reliable and memorable brand image from a company’s perspective. This theory shifted after watching several Vine videos within Lowes’ new marketing campaign #lowesfixinsix. I was able to understand the amazing potential for brands on Vine and admired the way in which Lowes was able to add extra value for its customers. Each video addressed a potential customer problem with a hysterical yet effective solution. For example, if a customer is debating how to water their plants while away on vacation, the campaign has posted a quick video about how the customer can fill an empty wine bottle with water, cork it, drill a hole through the top of the cork, and place the bottle upside-down in the soil of the plant. These videos are not meant to sell any of Lowes products but rather to enhance the brands value to its customer in an interactive and creative manner. I admire the approach Lowes is taking with their Vine account and I am curious to see if other brands will follow this method as well.
