All About SOPA, the Bill That Wants to Cripple Your Internet Very Soon | Social media and education | Scoop.it
SOPA, or the Stop Online Piracy Act, is another one of those bills that sounds like it's going to do something mildly positive but, in reality, has serious potential to negatively change the internet as we know it.

Imagine a World
Without Free Knowledge

For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia. Learn more.

__________

Don't know anything more about this than is on this page. But, it's certainly intriguing to me. My very first thought was, "I'd buy one of those in an instant!"

Why? Is it anything other than clever marketing of literature? Dunno! But so what? To me it's another way of expressing one's love of reading. And, I'm absolutely convinced that becoming a lover of reading is the first step in literacy. Whether it's the illustrations or wonderful rhyming schemes we remember from hearing the same Dr. Zeuss story read over and over again and begging for mom or dad to read it again tonight at bed time or pop-up books or the love of a finely bound book or the extremely cool highlighting and marginalia tools on my iPad, it's all part of the attraction beyond the text that encourages us to explore the text itself.

I want one of these, but it won't be left on the bookshelf waiting to be reread hoping that its non-descript spine will catch my eye as I scan the shelf looking for a book to spend some time with. It will be on display drawing attention to its intriguing and fascinating uniqueness. I can see it calling visitors from the coffee table to pick it up and take a look; inviting children and neighbors and friends to take a look inside.

My dream? What if they had White Fang by Jack London? That book would certainly be, as all great books become, a dog-eared treasure.

A Rhetorical Question...

What comes first a love of stories or literacy? Perhaps we should market the love more than the skill itself.

Do Teachers Need to Relearn How to Learn? – Redefining my role: Teacher as student

Do Teachers Need to Relearn How to Learn? – Redefining my role: Teacher as student | Social media and education | Scoop.it

I guess I’m a “techy” teacher. I finally accepted the label – given to me by co-workers – sometime in the past year, but I’m still a little surprised by the fact. After all, I had never been on the Internet until after I received my undergraduate degree and it wasn’t until I started teaching (about 7 years ago) that I really began to learn about computers and technology.  Jan 2nd, 2012 by Jonah Salsich

SOPA Sent to an Early Grave Under Sheer Pressure from Internet Users @ckandroid

SOPA Sent to an Early Grave Under Sheer Pressure from Internet Users @ckandroid | Social media and education | Scoop.it
Both tech-giants and First Amendment advocates went all out against SOPA, and brought it down.

If you were not living under a rock for the last few months, you probably have heard about SOPA.

It was a bill that would have killed the free Internet and made it a regulated and sugarcoated media of all things good!

The bill was ridiculous enough to penalize entire websites for a single sensitive content that any user posted.

It is time to rejoice finally, as SOPA has been withdrawn and the voice of the people has won through.
