Computer Safety for Kids & Teens

Computer Safety for Kids & Teens | Social media and education | Scoop.it

By Emma Kavanagh

The Internet provides us with an abundant amount of educational information, entertainment, and can connect us with people throughout the entire world. As wonderful as the Internet can be, it can also be a dangerous place for children and teens. When using the Internet, one must be careful about sharing any form of personal information because unfortunately the Internet can be a platform for cyber criminals to target kids, teens, and young adults. The most common types of criminals found on the web include (online predators), identity thieves, cyberbullies, and hackers. In order to protect your children and loved to the fullest extent one must take all the necessary precautions when using a computer.

Fighting plagiarism is serious business. Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 30, 4:19 AM

"Personal choice, with centralized control, in an increasingly data driven, standardized and mechanized learning system, has long been a fantasy for many technocrats desperately wanting to (re)shape K-12 teaching and learning with technology. In this alternate reality, class sizes no longer matter and new staffing patterns emerge. The amount of time students spend in schools becomes irrelevant as brick and mortar structures fade away.  Yet this fantasy disregards the overwhelming parental desire (and societal expectation) that children will gather together to learn."

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 30, 10:22 AM

We have entered the 21st Century with limited differences of what we do when it comes to mindful choices and uses of technology. We need mindful leadership in those areas.

What will generation Y be like as managers?  Some argue that when Generation Y becomes managers they will adapt the same behaviors and practices as the rest of us.  “Wait till they grow up and have real responsibility!.  That will teach ‘em”.  While this line of thinking seems to make sense because GenerationY will be in the same life stage (married, kids, etc) as the managers before them, it doesn’t take into account the tremendous shifts in the world of work.

Google's Schmidt: Teens' mistakes will never go away

Google's Schmidt: Teens' mistakes will never go away | Social media and education | Scoop.it
Speaking at a festival in the U.K., Google's executive chairman offers that the things teens do now will stay with them forever, by way of the Web. He also suggested some people are sharing too much online.

It must be peculiar for children of the Internet age.

They are the first to have a complete record of their whole lives. They are the first who'll be able to offer concrete proof of every one of their days, friends, and actions.

Eric Schmidt worries, however, that they'll be the first who'll never be allowed to forget their mistakes.

Barbara Macfarlan's curator insight, June 2, 6:09 PM

Part of our responsibility as teachers is to prepare our learners for their future. Helping them to understand that the Internet has a very long memory is pato of that role.

Lola Ripollés's comment, June 3, 3:53 AM
We must now educate on how to use all these new tools and try to make to make our teens understand that they should give a second thought to what they publish in the web. Difficult? of course! Educating was never an easy job.
Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment, June 3, 6:22 AM
How many times have you given your advice to your own children and they have only learnt by their own mistakes. Teaching this will be very difficult but is essential.

The New Places Where America's Tech Future Is Taking Shape

The New Places Where America's Tech Future Is Taking Shape | Social media and education | Scoop.it

"Technology is reshaping our economic geography, but there’s disagreement as to how. Much of the media and pundits like Richard Florida assert that the tech revolution is bound to be centralized in the dense, often 'hip' places where 'smart' people cluster.

From 2001 to 2012, STEM employment actually was essentially flat in the San Francisco and Boston regions and  declined 12.6% in San Jose. The country’s three largest mega regions — Chicago, New York and Los Angeles — all lost tech jobs over the past decade. In contrast, double-digit rate expansions of tech employment have occurred in lower-density metro areas such as Austin, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Columbus, Ohio; Houston and Salt Lake City. Indeed, among the larger established tech regions, the only real winners have been Seattle, with its diversified and heavily suburbanized economy, and greater Washington, D.C., the parasitical beneficiary of an ever-expanding federal power, where the number of STEM jobs grew 21% from 2001 to 2012, better than any other of the 51 largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas over that period."  Read more.
